World Series Game 5.5

Game 5 of the World Series was put on temporary hiatus due to bucket loads of rain being dumped upon the playing surface of Citizens Bank Park. The plan is to allow the game to resume from where it ended (score: 2-2, no outs in the bottom of the 6th) tonight at 8pm, but looking at the weather predictions that seems unlikely. Weather.com has rain forecast for the entire day, even into Wednesday morning. However, the rain is supposed to begin tampering off around 10 pm with the temperatures dipping into the low 30's with wind...will the game be delayed even further? I expect that they will make every effort to squeeze the game in tonight, because otherwise postponing the finish of Game 5 would severely alter the rest of the World Series schedule seeing that the teams are slotted to be in Florida on Wednesday for Game 6 if necessary.

Many Phans are irate, and I understand the frustration. Commissioner Bud Selig flat-out admitted he wouldn't have awarded the Phils a World Series Championship on a rain shortened contest...fair enough. But why then did you make Cole Hamels take the mound in that slop in the top of the 6th and not the Rays pitcher in the bottom? Selig cited rule 4.12a- "a game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date" for a number of reasons, with section 6 specifying "a regulation game that is called with the score tied." In this scenario, the rule (4.12c) for suspended games is enacted: "A suspended game shall be resumed at the exact point of suspension of the original game. The completion of a suspended game is a continuation of the original game. The lineup and batting order of both teams shall be exactly the same as the lineup and batting order at the moment of suspension, subject to the rules governing substitution. Any player may be replaced by a player who had not been in the game prior to the suspension. No player removed before the suspension may be returned to the lineup." Fine and dandy, now we have our ace removed from the game after only 75 pitches and half of a game yet to be played.

Questions:
*How many fans show up for World Series Game 5.5? They're basically only there for a few innings and many people travel long distances and make special arrangements to get there in the first place, and now have to bring their waterlogged bodies back. Hell, I'd pay $50 to reuse someones ticket tonight just to be there for the end.

*What's the bullpen rotation? My guess: 7th- Romero, 8th- Madson, 9th- Lidge.

*How many more runners will the Phils strand on base before it truly bites them in the ass? They need to hurry up and win this World Series already before the baseball gods notice the herd of runners left on base and revoke all victories.

*How much more agony can Phillies Phans endure? We've waited 28 years for a championship, what's few more hours or days.

*If the Phils go on to win Game 5.5, how cool of a story will this be to tell your children and/or grandchildren?

We need 1 run and 9 outs to be World Champions!!
I dont' care that the game is suspended, I don't care that Cole's night got cut short, I don't care if the game gets pushed back until Wednesday.

All I Fucking care about is the Philadelphia Phillies are 1 run and 9 God damn outs away from being CHAMPIONS.

LETS GO PHILADELPHIA FANS, GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES, STOP COMPLAINING, I DON'T GIVE A FUCK IF DAVID PRICE PITCHES, AND FURTHER MORE I HOPE DAVID PRICE PITCHES AFTER THE WAY THEY HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT HIM LIKE HE'S JESUS CHRIST. Wow, glad to see you in high spirits this gloomy morning Aaron. Myself, I went to bed pissed off and woke up pissed off.

I like that.
1 run. 9 outs.

There is also a 3-1 Phillies edge. Going back to Tampa is not a death sentence. It's unwanted. Was avoidable until the weather/Bud problems.

Let's take a lead from this team that has been so even-tempered all season: relax and come out to play hard.

Price isn't unhittable.

The suspension sucks. The timing of it was worse. But it's done. The Rays might wave the white flag after two days in Wilmington.

I read that the Rays checked out of their hotel before going to the ball park and now the hotel is booked full and they had to relocate. Hopefully that plays mind tricks with them. Hopefully they had to stay in a dingy rent-by-the-hour motel with dirty sheets and only cold water.

David Price has pitched 4.2 innings this post season. He's given up 2 runs walked 3 batters and given up one Bomb.

OOOOOOO SCARY!!!

GM-Carson said...

Freakin' Bruntlett took Price deep, so he can't be as amazing as they're making him out to be. He's good, but not that good. He's young and inexperienced, I'd welcome him coming into a deciding game of the World Series...crack under pressure? Rick Ankiel?

I really hope they get this game in tonight. Waiting around makes me nervous and more pissed off after thinking about everything that happened yesterday.

1 run. 9 outs.

This is disgusting that they even started this game in these conditions.

I was saying this the whole game, even when the phillies had the lead.

It wasn't right to do this to the fans or players.

I'm really curious how many fans will show up tonight or tomorrow night for the completion of this game. First they must still have their tickets, if they lost them, tough luck. Second, the weather looks really bad for tonight and that might keep people away which would be a shame.

Thanks Aaron, definitely needed that wake-up call to realize where we are before finishing up the game. 1 run, 9 outs!

it's weird, but i agree with aaron, we're fine folks. big picture, seriously... we're up 3-1 in the fucking world series. and we have to win half a game to be champs.

Forecast hasn't improved since early this morning, it's going to take a miracle to get this game in tonight. By the way, if it goes to Wednesday, is it possible that Hamels continues in the game?

There's plenty to complain about in regards to the way MLB handled the weather situation, but the bottom line is that the Phils once again squandered away far too many chances with men on base. We wouldn't be nearly as mad/terrified right now if play had to resume with the Phils up 5-2 or something close to that.

Bud Selig said that had the Phillies had a lead when he called the suspension, the game would just have been in a long rain delay. He wanted a tie game so he could suspend; I can only assume that's why the Phillies didn't bat in the bottom of the 6th. He didn't want the Phillies to take a lead and force a long rain delay.

As much as last night's suspended game after making the Phils play in the slopfest is total bullshit, there are some positives to go with it. When the game resumes, the good guys will have at least 12 outs to the Rays 9 to win the game. It's unlikely that the game will be resumed today, so the further it gets pushed back the more likely it is you get a rested Hamels to pitch in game 7 (if necessary).

Watching them put the tarp out during the World Series reminded me of the game last season where the Phils helped out the Colorado grounds crew with their tarp problem. We got plenty of reasons why this team deserves to win... just need one run and nine outs to make it happen.

It's still raining and I'm still pissed. I had dreams that I was trying to convince Chollie to put in Dobbs to lead off the 6th and he insisted on Eaton.

JMS said...

Oh and I thought up a shirt idea: I'm going to buy another NL Champs shirt and iron-on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on the back.

I'm hearing the game has been postponed until Wednesday due to the bad weather forecast. Ugh...

C.M.R. said...

hey at least it'll resume in philly, in front of the home crowd.

plus its supposed to be better tomorrow around the evening.

The weather is horrific. It's 41 in Chester County and just disgusting. I wouldn't want to watch a World Series in this, let alone try to celebrate.

Sadly, I think Thursday is our best bet. It's supposed to be nicer then, we can have a refreshed Cole Hamels, and I can blow off work Friday for a long weekend of parades.

The events of game 5 ending with Cole Hamel's 6th inning counting has made me lose faith and interesting in baseball. I am serious.

I can't believe they'd do this. But they did. And it makes me think baseball is fake, and I just don't care about it.

Guess we're down to only Hockey now for sport with integrity left. Though basketball's not too bad anymore.

The Phils will lose tomorrow night and then get crushed in the two games in Tampa. They could have blown the game open numerous times last night and did not. The Phils don't have the killer instinct and the Rays have the momentum. Pena and Longoria are hitting now. This only adds to our agony!!

GM-Carson said...

John-boy: Pena and Longoria are hitting now? Why, because they actually collected a few hits. Dude, they were 0-31 prior to Pena's double...chill out.
