The King Gives Phils Series Lead

Charlie Manuel, you son of a bitch, I almost had a heart attack yesterday.

Brad Lidge hasn't blown a save all year, and he did win the Comeback Player of the Year Award, but let's face it, he hasn't been that great lately. In four of his last five saves of the regular season he needed 24 or more pitches to get the job done. And he was two stellar Jimmy Rollins defensive plays away from blowing the NL East clincher. Yet Charlie pulled a virtually unhittable Cole Hamels with a 3-0 lead in favor of his closer. A walk, two hits, a run and 36 pitches later, the Phils hold a one-love lead in the NLDS and I guess I shouldn't be complaining...
--------------------------
More Lidge
Carson mentioned this yesterday, but I think it deserves repeating that Lidge won the Comeback Player of the Year Award, especially because it was so appropriately sponsored by Viagra. As we saw in the All-Star game, if Lidge warms up for more than four hours, he has to call his doctor...
--------------------------
Billboards & Scoreboards
Can anyone give me the score of the Mets game last night? I've looked all over and I can't find it. I'm sure they played a playoff game last night, I mean, why would this giant billboard advertise the playoffs on TBS with that Mutt David Wright if they weren't even in the playoffs?
--------------------------
That's Offensive
In last year's NLDS, the Phils couldn't hit. They couldn't hit Jeff Francis. Hell, they couldn't even hit Josh Fogg. And that trend has continued into this post season. The team was 4-27 in game one. And really they were only 3-27 because Chase Utley's "double" was an error on Cameron.

Charlie Manuel said the team "hit enough to win the game." I disagree. They won the game in spite of their hitting, not because of it. Four hits won't win many playoff games.
--------------------------
Game 2
"Maybe tomorrow we’ll get after big CC." - Charlie Manuel

Maybe. But probably not. The Phils have trouble with mediocre lefthanded pitching, let alone the reigning ALo Cy Young winner. Combine with Brett Myers' recent performances, and things don't look so promising today. But hey, that's why they play the games.

Now we need 10 wins.

That's it....Im done bithcing about how many hits we had or what moves cholly made or who made an error. There is only one stat that I care about any more...wins.

TBS + Baseball = Fail

remember the kyle lohse catastrophe last year..

I see J.A. Happ in that roll this year..

If Myers fucks up...

They will have this kid ready... and the real question is, how do you hide this from Myers...

got dang it.

GM-Carson said...

Aaron is right, all that matters are wins. I could care less if the Phils go no-hit, managed to only score on an error, and won the game 1-0. It's a win, and that's the biggest thing in the playoffs.

TBS wasn't all bad yesterday. I enjoyed John Smoltz in the booth. I prefer him in the booth rather than the diamond.

Still can't believe "Cooch" was flashed as Ruiz's nickname...idiots!

JMS said...

I'm also with Aaron on this one. The 2008 team is not the 2007 team. Only Philly fans can find a way to be overwhelmingly pessimistic after winning a playoff game.

GM-Carson said...

For those that care, Victorino has a playoff blog via Phillies.com. Worth a quick read.

Here's a good article by Jayson Stark on how the Phils never make it easy.

People were not very optimistic yesterday. Yes we only had 4 hits and 0 earned runs but the Brewers only had 4 hits too and 1 earned run that came in the 9th inning. And yes Brad Lidge had trouble in the 9th but it's been like that all year and he's still perfect.

Now the key to today's game: clearly Brett Myers. If he can keep the Phillies in the game and C.C. does not go a CG, I think the Phillies win.

GM-Carson said...

From Corey and my Opening Day 2008 post-

Day I Give Up On The Season - Despite my apocalyptic prophecy of only 82 wins, I will not discount what this team is capable of. I love the Phillies, and I'm fully prepared to eat my words and embrace yet another playoff drive. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the highs and get pissed and rant about the lows, but no giving up the season this year; I'm going to stick it out.

*Thank goodness I didn't write this team off again this year.

By the way, call me naive or blindly optimistic, but I think Myers will rock tonight and the Phils will score just enough off of CC to win the game.

GM-Carson said...

After the Opening Day loss Sir Alden predicted 92-69 the rest of the way. Dammit he's good!

JMS said...

Carson, I see your blind optimism and raise you complete giddiness.

Maria, please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 9th inning run unearned on an Utley error?

GM-Carson said...

It would have been unearned, but Lidge allowed a hit after than, thus making the run earned because Durham would have scored on the hit. Baseball scoring is tricky sometimes.

GM-Carson said...

Actually, I think it was the walk and then wild pitch that made it earned. I'm not sure. Like I said baseball scoring is tricky sometimes.

Maria said...

I thought it was unearned and then I checked the box score.

No one got a hit after Braun's double. Prince Field struck out, wild pitch, and then the final strikeout of Hart. Is it assumed that he would've scored on the wild pitch anyway?

Maria said...

It sucks because it makes Lidge's ERA 9.00.

You can't assume a double play but you can assume that he still would've had a wild pitch?

furiousBall said...

i'm worried about what ripjgarcia mentioned, using a starter to finish an inning that should be a place for a reliever. hopefully that problem doesn't come up this post season. today's game, i hope the phils come out loose and make CC work.

GM-Carson said...

I hope the Phils wrap up a NLDS series win before game 5 back in Philly, but in the event that they don't, I just got tickets for it.

GM-Carson said...

Mets making more bad news. Relief pitcher Ambriorix Burgos killed two women with an SUV yesterday in the DR. This on the heels of him being arrested last month for throwing his woman to the ground.

GreggyD said...

I heard Mitch Williams say on Sportsrise that Sabathia is "due for a bad start." I'd like to think that as well. Granted, pitchers used to go on 3 days rest all the time years and years ago, but that is not the norm and if your arm is not used to that type of wear it will get tired eventually. The offense really needs to step up today though. The bats were eerily silent at the plate which unfortunately brought back bad memories from last year's playoff series.

You're right in saying that wins are all that matters, but I think that the offense's performance is enough to make me question some things. I'll gladly take the 1-0 lead, but I need to see a lot more to believe they have a chance of going up 2-0.

Scotty said...

Maria, you are right, you can't assume a double play, however no one is assuming the wild pitch, it actually happened. Braun's double would have at least had men at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Fielder then struck out and Hardy walked. Therefore there would have been bases loaded with 2 outs when the wild pitched occurred. Durham would have scored regardless of how Utley handled that throw, making it an earned run.

GM-Carson said...

Scotty, love your ballsy appearance on here today with that Mets emblem. You're a good egg, too bad you're not a Phils Phan.

JMS said...

You can't assume a double play but you can assume that he still would've had a wild pitch?

Everyone should always assume Rollins to Utley to Howard.

GM-Carson said...

Campaign Cheer to Campaign Beer? Beat the Brew Crew and I'm sure we can work something out.

Maria said...

I just think that if the bases were loaded with 2 outs he would've pitched a bit differently to Corey Hart and probably not have had a wild pitch.

GM-Carson said...

Minor note- crappy going nowhere reliever Francisco Rosario was released and the Phils claimed Scott Nestor off waivers from the Marlins. Nestor was horrible in AAA this season with a 7.44 era. Crap out, crap in I suppose.

Let's give tip our hats to the also rans in the WSBGM's Fantasy Baseball 2 League.

Here is a Shout Out to our friend Bloodstrips for his Bronze!

92-70 is a very nice set of numbers. Anything 70 or less on the right always seems so much nicer.

Sitting here in the WSBGM's Virtual Tail Gate Party before Game 2 of first round of the National League Playoffs with everyone is deeply satisfying.

! WooT !

1 - 2 - 3 Double Play

Myers to Chooch to Howard!

GM-Carson said...

This game looks real promising- bad Myers, strikeout happy Utley and Howard, and an ump giving CC pitches a foot off the plate and 6 inches low. F'n great!

dr. steve said...

I don't think any Phillies player should move to third because I have yet to see the Phillies hit sacrifice fly in such a situation.

GM-Carson said...

Utley is my favorite player, but playoff Utley sucks. Gift double from yesterday aside, he's done nothing in the postseason. Small sample size I know, but it's a sample nonetheless. Here's to hoping he calms down and starts making good contact.

dr. steve said...

That was the best at-bat of all time, especially how the crowd was so into it. Nothing beats Philadelphia and I dare anyone to say otherwise after that at-bat. (Myers vs. Sabathia.)

dr. steve said...

WHO WANTED TO TRADE THIS GUY!?!?!

I have been the number one fan of Victorino since he arrived on the scene. He is the Scottie Upshall of the Phillies (much like how Richards is the Chase Utley of the Flyers) and he is simply phenomenal. He brings so much energy and speed to your team, and he hits for average which is something the Phillies need badly.

But come on, TRADE him? Give him the money they owe Howard and the money they paid Burrell.

GM-Carson said...

Holy shit what just happened? Myers with a freakin' awesome at bat to work the walk, then Jimmy walks, then Vic goes Yahtzee! for the slam. Wow!!!!!!! CC looks fried.

SirAlden said...

! WooT !

Slider Middle In To Victorino
with the Bases Loaded!

! Grand Slam ! 5-1 Phils bottom 2.

dr. steve said...

Someone tell me there is a great radio call for that amazing grand slam as opposed to TBS's terrible announcers going "Yep... grand slam."

dr. steve said...

Jesus Christ they got more excited over Victorino stealing third base than his grand-freaking-slam.

BloodStripes said...

Little Vic smokes big CC for a salami. It doesn't get better than that. I'm sticking by my statement. If the Phils beat CC they sweep.

BloodStripes said...

The bloke who called the slam is Milwaukee's regular season announcer. He was hurtin' inside watching that one sail out. It should be Harry calling.

dr. steve said...

There's got to be some kind of contract thing, who wouldn't want HARRY KALAS on national TV?

But why do we get screwed over and NEVER have our announcers on national TV? Both Hockey and now Baseball, our announcers sit at home while the other team's ones get to call the game.

BloodStripes said...

I'm switching between MLB.TV and the call on WPHT. Harry on the radio for the middle innings.

BloodStripes said...

Maybe Harry gets to call in Milwaukee. As the Phils take the series he can go over the top with excitement.

Give it to 'em Phils! Talk to me about a pennant!

BloodStripes said...

Myers with a 10 pitch out. Most productive out for a Phillies pitcher in history. Lets get to the pen boys!

dr. steve said...

Knowing they're the Brewer's announcers and very biased makes hearing what they have to say even more sickening. Can't we get some positive media spin on a Philly team?

BloodStripes said...

There is only one Brewers announcer but still, they could have evened it up and included Wheels or Harry.

nhermansader said...

I have the TV muted and the radio broadcast on.

I can't watch the Phils without Harry.

BloodStripes said...

"The resilient brewers". Their announcer is getting all excited. F you dude we have the Lord on the mound. Smoke him JC.

Let's Put Another One In The WIN COLUMN For The Phightin' Phils!!!!

Two Down. One To Go!

BloodStripes said...

Great win Phils. Finish them off on saturday.

dr. steve said...

I was right, Lidge got his confidence back getting through the first game on his own and not with a miracle double play.

Did you see how thrilled he was to come in and just smoke them? I'm excited.

BRING ON THE DODGERS!! I hope the Cubs go down bad.

SirAlden said...

Hey Furious Ball!

What's the difference between Hot-Dogs at Citizens Bank Park and Shea Stadium again?

JMS said...

So what headline do you go with tomorrow? "Myers beats Sabathia"? "Sabathihuh"? "Sabaphucked" (my friend's take on the whole thing)?

Amazing game. I think the '08 squad needs to be called the Comeback Kids, if that hasn't been used already.

Go Phils!

Maria said...

Brett Myers had the best at-bat of the entire series. The more the crowd cheered, the more frustrated CC became. So fun. We all get a day of rest and so does Lidge even though be pitched much better today.

Aaron said...

9 more wins everybody

ripjgarcia said...

Unfortunately, due to his radio football contract, I don't think you will be hearing Harry on FOX TV either.. best you get is LA

I am tryin to keep a low profile... no jinxes.

Get back to you Sunday.

GM-Carson said...

Damn it feels good to be a Phils Phan right now.
