I Love [Beating] LA

Game 1 Recap
Key Play - Rafael Furcal making an error allowing Shane Victorino to reach before Chase Utley's homer. I know that both Phillies homers were big, but I don't think the inning turns out the way it does if Furcal makes that routine play. And yes, I do mean routine play. I'm sure Victorino's speed and hustle had a little to do with Furcal making the error, but he had plenty of time to get him if he fields and fires like he does every other time he plays a groundball.

Key Play Runner-Up - The left field wall knocking down Manny's drive in the first inning. If you believe the talking heads on TV, The Cit has 200 feet fences and 10 homers are hit there per game. The reality is that some monster shots stay in the yard. If the Dodgers jump out 2-0 in the first, it's a very different game.

Best Homer By A Player Having A Birthday Today - Pat Burrell. He has a one path swing, yet pitchers keep throwing it right in his path. That's weird, you'd think that once The Rat made Pat's "one path swing" public knowledge, pitchers would pitch it elsewhere. Another mystery...Happy Birthday Pat.

Worst Play - So Taguchi's bunt. Holy crap, I can't believe that guy got in the game. Why is he on the playoff roster? What can he possibly contribute to this team? Help me, somebody, because these unanswerable questions are driving me crazy.

Best Defender - Blake Dewitt - First, is there more of an LA-style name than Blake Dewitt. It sounds like he should be on MTV's "Laguna Beach" or in gay porn. Anyway, the guy worked the glove last night. Bare hand scoops, unassisted double plays, you have to give him credit for a tremendous game at second.

Best Use Of The Slider - Brad Lidge got through the 9th inning on only 13 pitches, 10 of which were sliders. He had good velocity and command and left Phillies fans with enough fingernail length to chew a little during game 2.

Worst Defender - Ryan Howard - Watching that ball bounce off of his chest was pitiful and comical at the same time. But, he hits more than 40 homers a year, so we'll forgive...

Worst Announcer - Tie between FOX's Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. I wish Buck would quit lying to all of us and just openly root for LA. And as for McCarver, he's just a freaking moron. Where's Deion Sanders and a bucket of water when you need him. [Although, calling Manny's actions in Boston "despicable" is spot on.]

Game 2 Preview
The Dodgers send another high quality starter to the hill on Friday, which they'll pretty much do for every game. Chad Billingsley was a highly touted prospect (1st round pick in '03) who's living up to expectations. He's 35-19 with a 3.33 ERA over the course of his three year career. Against Philadelphia he is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA, including a six inning, 7 hit, 3 run loss against the Phils this year.

Brett Myers....well, who the hell knows. We could see "Rock Star" Myers of the second half, or "Rock Smoker" Myers of the first half.

Would you be happy with a split heading to LA? I won't be. Let's Go Phils!

Here is the latest from that douche from the LA times after game 1....He talks some shit about the Phanatic...Now he's gone to far....

RECEIVED A bunch of angry e-mail from the folks who live in Angryville. Imagine that. Most were loaded with obscenities, people so angry about what someone in L.A. might think of them, they just ran a bunch of bad words together.

BEFORE THE game, the scoreboard asked the fans to wave their towels and they did. Good thing they didn't ask them to jump off the Whitman Bridge.

MORE STUPIDITY from Angryville: The Phillies' mascot brought out a mini-Dodgers helmet with dreadlocks hanging from it, set it on the ground and then with the crowd howling, smashed it to bits with something akin to a sledgehammer. Later the mascot took the Dodgers cap off a fan, stomped on it and then tried to rip the Dodgers shirt off him.

It's no wonder kids around here grow up thinking violence is just part of the game.

7 wins to go.

what. a. dick.

Phils 1, Dodgers 0, Simers bitter.

That win was huge. Phils took complete advantage of their opportunities and made LA pay. Hamels was deservedly awarded a win after pitching a gem. That's what playoff ball is all about. What a relief it was to see Chase come through in the clutch. Big Fly Ry's turn next.

Ryan Madson has a good changeup no doubt but I thought it hilarious to hear one of the talking heads on fox say he has the best changeup on the team after he just watched Hamels who has the best change in the business throw countless killer ones through 7 innings. How do these knob jockeys get their jobs and better yet, keep them? Get excited now and then. Every bloody year its the same. Like they are calling shots at the morgue. It for the pennant you necks.

Lets see rock star Brett and take 2 wins to LA.

My game thoughts:
*Shut up announcers about the ballpark being a "bandbox" and Utley and Burrell's shots not being homeruns in other parks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the Dodgers were batting in the same ballpark as the Phillies hitters were last night thus creating an equal playing field.

*I think I counted 73 references to Manny Ramirez and 39 to Boston during the telecast, yet only 2 to Philadelphia...strange.

*The only mention of the Phillies' fans was when they booed Taguchi. No mention of them going bonkers after the homeruns and in the 9th.

*Why didn't Charlie pinch hit Greg Dobbs? There was no lefty warming up in the 'pen at that time and Dobbs was the best pinch hitter in MLB this season...hmmm?

*How wasn't that play be Howard an error?

*Furcal didn't set his feet, kept his chest open, which he threw across, thus leading to the high outside toss and game changing error.

That picture of Pat rounding the bases while Lowe looks on in disgust is one of the best action shots I've ever seen.

The game one win was huge and an awesome game. Now its time for Myers and the Phils to step up and take game 2 before heading into LA. This game is just as important as getting an early 1-0 lead.

Magic number down to 7.

GM-Carson said...

I really hope Greg Dobbs gets the start tonight at 3rd. At least that gives us some hope of offense from the bottom third of the lineup.

It's nice to see Pat's bat coming alive. He's staying back and really driving the ball, that homer went out like a shot.

Suck it, Simers.

I hope Brett the Bulldog shows up tonight. 2-0 going into L.A. would be glorious.

I was there last night. What a scene.
There is no way Dodger Stadium ever rocked like that. (WIth the exception of the Kirk Gibson homer.)

I was in right-center (Sec 102, 3 rows from the end) by the bullpens and it felt like the stands were closing in on the field, the energy from the fans pushing the first and third baselines closer together, squeezing the Dodgers. It was awesome to watch the bowl surrounding home plate engulf the action. My seats could have been a lot better, but having the whole stage in front of me was great.

These teams are well matched, so this is going to be a staring contest. And the Dodgers (Furcal) blinked first. Like the Boston-LAA series with the Angels making mistakes like a 3-run "single," small things will tip the scales one way or another.

The Phillies look so relaxed. The mood is confident. LA was tight. And now, with a loss, even tighter.

Manny's double could be a good omen. That's as far as you can hit the ball at CBP and not hit a home run.

Dobbs should get the start. Billingsley is vulnerble to lefties and Myers doesn't need the infield help like a Moyer or Blanton.

GM-Carson said...

Dobbs should start because he rocks righties and Feliz gets rocked by righties...simple enough for me.

Reverend Paul Revere said...

Ok, so you have a gun but only one bullet. Who do you shoot? T.J. Simers or So Taguchi?

I think I'll go with So because he actually can affect the Phillies. Bitter old men are funny to me.

GM-Carson said...

I line them up directly in line with each other and pull...

furiousBall said...

great, great game last night. that was definitely an error on howard... i mean on form alone.

GM-Carson said...

Dobbs batting 7th and playing 3rd today, wise decision.

GM-Carson said...

On an very unfunny note- it's being circulated the Charlie Manuel's mother died today. No word yet of what the Phils skipper plans to do.

That's horrible news, I feel for you Charlie.

GM-Carson said...

ESPN release about Charlie's mom.

GM-Carson said...

I'm actually really shaken by this Manuel's mother news. I've actually come to like the big oaf, he grew on me, and I truly feel for him right now.

furiousBall said...

that sucks about Charlie's mom, i lost my dad this past April, losing a parent is nothing you can prepare for

GM-Carson said...

I already wanted the Phils to win today and the World Series, but I wanted that for me. I now want it for Charlie too.

GM-Carson said...

Big ups to Corey for making Deadspin today.

dr. steve said...

So all the MLB news says some variant on this: "Dodgers must rebound to tie series"

Nothing about the Phillies. Not even the word "Philadelphia." All fucking Dodgers. This is an abomination and a blight on humanity.

Also, that sucks about Manuel's mom. :(

BloodStripes said...

C'mon Phils do it for Charlie.

BloodStripes said...

Chooch and Myers coming through. Shit yeah!.....and J-Roll.....and Victoberino.......and......Chase keeps it going.....and.....ah who cares, that will do.

BloodStripes said...

Hey. Was that Ryan Howards 200th strikeout? If so, congratulations big fella. How about celebrating with a homerun next AB.

BloodStripes said...

Carson. Your man Dobbs started all that. What would have happened if Feliz batted 3rd then? Yikes! Go Dobbs.

GM-Carson said...

Cheers: 2 out rally started by Dobbs, then a Chooch double, another Myers hit, a bleeder by J-Roll, capped off by a Vic knock.

Jeers: Myers control and Howard striking himself out by not taking pitches just off his shoe tops.

4-2, lets go Phils!

SirAlden said...

"All our hearts go out to you and to your Mother Charlie. Thank you Mother Manuel. Thank you for Giving Us Charlie."

GM-Carson said...

Dude, Myers just got another hit. He's 2-2 today with 3 rbi and a run scored. He had 4 hits all season, now 3 in the postseason.

BloodStripes said...

So many Phils turning it on in October. This is amazing. A different hero every hour.

Also, isn't it amazing how much we all love Charlie now? What a turnaround.

BloodStripes said...

Let's Put Another One In The Win Column For The Phightin' Phils!!!!

BloodStripes said...

2 wins. Halfway to being National League Champs.

Pack an extra suitcase for your confidence Phils. Enjoy the flight and go get 'em sunday.

BloodStripes said...

RIP June Manuel.

dr. steve said...

The announcers always get on my nerves. Always. Such an anti-Phillies sentiment and a "Watch out for this guy." sentiment for the Dodgers.

Heard the game on the radio. Fun day. Go Phils. I just wish the announcers would care when Lidge strikes out the last out.

dr. steve said...

What the hell? Victorino's Grandmom Passed Away. :(

dr. steve said...

Man all the media is focused on the Dodgers. It's not "The Phillies hit the Dodgers well" It's "The Dodgers didn't pitch right to the Phillies"

BloodStripes said...

Dr Steve. Read this guy from the Washington post. He has been good. Especially the dispelling illusions article.
