What a Weekend

Friday- death to Mets via Brett Myers' masterful pitching arm.
Saturday- washout due to bucket loads of rain.
Sunday- split day/night double-header with Grand Pappy pitching skillfully and Cole Hamels pitching tentatively.

Overall, the weekend series against the Mets was a success. Phils went to New York 3 games out of the NL East division lead, and leave town only 2 games back. Last night's game with our ace on the mound would have been nice to win, but a sweep just wasn't meant to be according to fat pitches by Cole and a fat bat carried by Carlos Delgado. The Mets get a day of rest today while the Phils head back home for a series against the fanless Marlins.

Good Stuff:
*Greg Dobbs hitting homeruns.
*Ryan Howard going the opposite way for singles and homeruns.
*Jamie Moyer and Brett Myers blanking the Mets over 15 innings.
*Matt Stairs contributing.
*The return of Tadahito Iguchi.

Bad Stuff:
*Pat Burrell being the worst offensive player in MLB over the past month. That's not an exaggeration, that's an actual fact.
*Cole Hamels inability to shutdown the team's biggest rival.
*The umpiring against the Phils lately. Not only have calls not gone our way, apparently MLB issued a memo that all Phillies coaches that show the slightest bit of anger are to be immediately ejected, despite if they have a decent gripe or not.

Why does 2 games seem so big? It's only 2 games. The Phils overcame 7 in 17 last year. They should be able to handle 2 in 19.

Like you said in yesterday's comments, Cole Hamels is clearly afraid of the Mets. But the umpiring was dreadful.

The Phillies will never get another call again.

I want to love Cole Hamels, and I should love Cole Hamels, but him coming up small last night is an example of why I'm always a bit hesitant to profess him as the true ace and leader of the pitching staff. All in all, he's having a damn fine season, but he came up very small last night in a crucial game.

It may be time to sit Burrell a few games. He's back in a bad, bad way.

And maybe this is why Cole doesn't like his starts moved up: He sucks when he's moved up. At least he did last night. Can you say meatball?

yesterday evening, i wanted a pitcher, not a belly itcher. Cole itched bellies.

Cole Hamels is just too young still. He doesn't have that competitive edge, or that trust in his stuff, to bring it in Big Games. I capitalized that for a reason.

For now, if Brett continues to be Super Brett, Cole should relish his 2nd starter role. He is fragile-minded. Let's not heap the pressure on him. He's no DeSean Jackson.

GM-Carson said...

I actually ate a meatball sub while watching the game last night...maybe it's my fault.

Both the Phillies and Mets are average teams with flaws.

This stretch run won't come down to who's better.
(It's a wash)

It's a question of who's hungrier.

GM-Carson said...

I'm pretty damn hungry right now. Can I get into contention for the NL East too?

Reverend Paul Revere said...

I have been known to feast on meatballs. I am Italian after all.

GM-Carson said...

I'm not Italian, just fat.

Mets' Wagner will miss 2009 season with elbow tear

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Mets closer Billy Wagner has torn elbow ligament, out for 2008 and 2009 seasons.

BTW we have 7 losses due to bad umpiring at last count. We will be fine. Go Phillies!

Go back to your Alpaca Ranch, baby whiner and cash the Mutts checks.

Good Job.

1 1/2 for the division.

3 for the wild card. Brewers free falling with a crappy bullpen.

GM-Carson said...

With the Brew Crew coming in this weekend, Phils have a decent chance to being the leaders for the NL Wild Card come the end of that series.

RJ Swindle was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for Tadahito Iguchi.

Joe Blanton....Fat and stupid is no way to go through life son.
I'd like to recind my previous comments about Blanton not being a bad move. He actually just sucks.
Here is what I would like our rotation to be next year..
Sabathia or Harden
Happ or Carrasco
No Eaton, No Blanton, No Kendrick, No Fat guys.

I actually am more confident that we will be able to catch the Brewers than the Mets.
We get a huge break missing CC in a 4 game series with the Crew.
I think we take 3 out 4 in that series and catch those guys.

Ha Ha Billy Wagner...F you. Couldn't have happened to a nicer Rat. "Billy Wagner has a one path elbow and I stuck a knife right in his path".

Also love Pat Burrell, he cares if he wins or loses. He's good guy who works hard...But I have to say that I really think we ought to let him go next year and find someone with more all around tools. Someone who hits for average. Someone who is more consistant and doesn't need to be defensively replaced.
We have given Pat the Bat a lot of Shit over the years but he never turned on us, gotta respect the guy.

Phils are gonna make the playoffs one way or another. It would be awesome to flog Milwaukee in the upcoming series. They collapsed last year too. Both teams the Phils are chasing have the propensity to choke. Maybe our phightins out win them both.

Love the way Rollins is heating up. Over his career September is his best month. Just what we need. Keep winning boys. Smoke them fish!
