Our Boy Burrell: Here at WSBGM's we've praised Burrell, loved Burrell, ripped Burrell, and nearly disowned Burrell, but he's always been our boy. Burrell was having one of his best all-around seasons and I thought he might actually make it through the year without that extended slump...welcome to August. Pat is now a gruesome 3-30 (.100) this month.
Getting Funky?: In a funk, also on the brink of a slump, is slugger Ryan Howard who is 1-16 (.063) over the last 4 games. He's only struck out 3 times though, and just to go and show that contact is more effective than whiffing, Howard knocked in 2 runs last night while going 0-5.
Screw Manny!: Manny Ramirez pisses me off. The man is one of the best right-handed hitters of all time, yet that gets overshadowed by his dumbassery on and off the field. Accused of dogging it in his final games as a BoSock, he's been nothing of the sort since joining the Dodgers- 10 games, 9 r, 19 h, 3 dbl, 4 hr, 13 rbi, .475 avg, and 1.393 OPS. He played a big part in LA's victory of Philly last night with that deathblow bases loaded double off of Kendrick. Eaton LoveFest '08, my WSBGM's Phantasy League team, benefited because Derek Lowe was the winning pitcher, but I could have done without that.
Rehab Updates: Kris Benson, in line for a September call-up, turned in his 5th quality start in a row for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs yesterday. Over the past 5 starts: 33 ip, 36 h, 9 er, 4 bb, 19 k, and 2.45 era. Rudy Seanez pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Benson, and picked up the victory.
1st Round Pick Updates: 2006- Kyle Drabek continues to work his way back from injury with the Gulf Coast League Phillies, starting his 3rd game of the season yesterday, now with 9 ip, 4 k, 0.00 era on the year. 2007- Joe Savery has had ups and downs this season, but won his 7th game of the season yesterday, now 7-9, with 108 k's and a 4.16 era in 132 innings for the Clearwater Phillies.
Closer Report: Brad Lidge has declared himself fit to pitch, "I felt good. It's up to them. If they don't call down, they don't call down, but I'm ready." He also gave an inclination about him being mishandled in the All-Star game, "Before the All-Star Game, it was feeling like I had a tiny bit of tendinitis. If I would've just thrown regular at the All-Star Game, like a normal up-and-in inning, it probably would have gone away, because I had the other three days off over the break. I don't want to say the All-Star Game caused it to be bad, but obviously it didn't help." F.U. very much Clint Hurdle!
Blast from the Past: Last Year (8/12/07)- I was the angry blogger getting arrested for my fake altercation with the craptastic Adam Eaton. 2 Years Ago (8/12/06)- I was hyping up the Phils Wild Card chances after a 14-inning win over the Reds while comparing the game to PEZ of all things.
MLB Homerun Leaders by Letter of the Alphabet: 6 have played for the Phillies. Letter F- Jimmie Foxx 534, Letter I- Pete Incaviglia 206, Letter L- Greg Luzinski 307, Letter T- Jim Thome 531, Letter U- Chase Utley 126, and Letter Z- Todd Zeile 253.
Tonight: 10:10 start, which is borderline bedtime, Cole Hamels looks to get back to his winning ways against highly touted rookie lefty Clayton Kershaw.
