Tuesday Tidbits: Phils Edition

Our Boy Burrell: Here at WSBGM's we've praised Burrell, loved Burrell, ripped Burrell, and nearly disowned Burrell, but he's always been our boy. Burrell was having one of his best all-around seasons and I thought he might actually make it through the year without that extended slump...welcome to August. Pat is now a gruesome 3-30 (.100) this month.

Getting Funky?: In a funk, also on the brink of a slump, is slugger Ryan Howard who is 1-16 (.063) over the last 4 games. He's only struck out 3 times though, and just to go and show that contact is more effective than whiffing, Howard knocked in 2 runs last night while going 0-5.

Screw Manny!: Manny Ramirez pisses me off. The man is one of the best right-handed hitters of all time, yet that gets overshadowed by his dumbassery on and off the field. Accused of dogging it in his final games as a BoSock, he's been nothing of the sort since joining the Dodgers- 10 games, 9 r, 19 h, 3 dbl, 4 hr, 13 rbi, .475 avg, and 1.393 OPS. He played a big part in LA's victory of Philly last night with that deathblow bases loaded double off of Kendrick. Eaton LoveFest '08, my WSBGM's Phantasy League team, benefited because Derek Lowe was the winning pitcher, but I could have done without that.

Rehab Updates: Kris Benson, in line for a September call-up, turned in his 5th quality start in a row for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs yesterday. Over the past 5 starts: 33 ip, 36 h, 9 er, 4 bb, 19 k, and 2.45 era. Rudy Seanez pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Benson, and picked up the victory.

1st Round Pick Updates: 2006- Kyle Drabek continues to work his way back from injury with the Gulf Coast League Phillies, starting his 3rd game of the season yesterday, now with 9 ip, 4 k, 0.00 era on the year. 2007- Joe Savery has had ups and downs this season, but won his 7th game of the season yesterday, now 7-9, with 108 k's and a 4.16 era in 132 innings for the Clearwater Phillies.

Closer Report: Brad Lidge has declared himself fit to pitch, "I felt good. It's up to them. If they don't call down, they don't call down, but I'm ready." He also gave an inclination about him being mishandled in the All-Star game, "Before the All-Star Game, it was feeling like I had a tiny bit of tendinitis. If I would've just thrown regular at the All-Star Game, like a normal up-and-in inning, it probably would have gone away, because I had the other three days off over the break. I don't want to say the All-Star Game caused it to be bad, but obviously it didn't help." F.U. very much Clint Hurdle!

Blast from the Past: Last Year (8/12/07)- I was the angry blogger getting arrested for my fake altercation with the craptastic Adam Eaton. 2 Years Ago (8/12/06)- I was hyping up the Phils Wild Card chances after a 14-inning win over the Reds while comparing the game to PEZ of all things.

MLB Homerun Leaders by Letter of the Alphabet: 6 have played for the Phillies. Letter F- Jimmie Foxx 534, Letter I- Pete Incaviglia 206, Letter L- Greg Luzinski 307, Letter T- Jim Thome 531, Letter U- Chase Utley 126, and Letter Z- Todd Zeile 253.

Tonight: 10:10 start, which is borderline bedtime, Cole Hamels looks to get back to his winning ways against highly touted rookie lefty Clayton Kershaw.

Damn, not one comment today. Well, I'm breaking the cherry with a simple "Yo!".

I'm just so disgusted with this team. The Mets bullpen blows yet another game, the Marlins fall to the Cardinals, and it just so happens that Kyle Kendrick's run of fantastic pitching happens to end at the same time. I'm glad the team showed some fight in the end, but I hate the never ending rollercoaster ride that is the Philadelphia Phillies. Hamels pitches tonight so you know we will be lucky to see one run for the away team.

Things going against the Phils tonight:
1. Rookie pitcher for the Dodgers, and he's lefty (that's like a bonus negative), Clayton Kershaw.
2. The Phils never seem to give ace Cole Hamels much run support if any at all.
3. Ryan Howard, who is already in a slump, is batting a shitty .189 against lefties, with a .595 OPS.
4. Manny Ramirez is red hot...no make that while/blue hot.
5. I don't believe for a second everything is good to go with Lidge.

Time for Jason Werth to take some pitches, step up and be as productive as he was early in the season. Charlie is giving him a great chance to be a regular.

I'm still not sold on Jayson Werth as a regular, but I'm also not sold on Geoff Jenkins ever really being productive again.

A double negative? Does that mean the Phils will score runs for the other team? (Only if Howard is attempting a throw to 2nd base)

After October I guess a line will be forming for us Phillie fans for therapy sessions. Bloodstripes will have to fly in from the land down under.

Burrell is OPS'ing .944 against LHP, and Werth is at 1.000.
Plus, it is Joe Beimel Bobblehead Night, which puts some extra pressure on LA. Have to like the Phils to win tonight.

Phillies.com is having a 25% off sale until 4pm today- just picked up Walrond and Cervenak jerseys...

We wont be able to close the door on the Mets and Fish. They will hang around a game or two behind. This series against LA is a fantastic chance for one of them to catch up to us as the Phillies will win one game at best vs. the Dodgers.

GM-Carson said...

Mike- you get much respect if you indeed did pick up a Walrond and Cervenak jersey. That's like the dude in the stands you see on tv occasionally with a Rhodes jersey on...just sad.

Boogerking said...

Worst jerseys spotted this year: 10. Floyd 9.Nunez 8.Fasano 7.Gordon 6.Wagner 5.Rhodes 4.Helms 3.Lieberthal 2.Byrd (paul or Marlon,either way...) 1.Eaton
You should be ejected for wearing an Eaton jersey.

David Bell or Rob Ducey would be up there on my list of horrible Phils jerseys to own.

That Manuel-Myers "Singing their Holiday Favorites" DVD is 45% off! I bought 5!

No-hit Nunez should be 2nd on that list, Boogerking.

I once had a Wagner jersey. It got stolen out of a laundromat. At first I was pissed for a while, then he signed with the Mets, and I thought... Imagine the karma that thief just inherited...

Let's see if the boys can actually get Hamels some support this time around!

It should be an interesting matchup - Manny vs. Hamels.

GM-Carson said...

Holy crap, the BoSox just put a 10 spot on the Rangers in the 1st inning. That's 3-4 games worth of runs for us.

Mike said...

Ortiz had 2 HR and 6 RBI in the inning.
Ruiz has 2 HR and 21 RBI in 235 AB this season.

I've had it with Charlie Fuqnut!! Burrell should explode for being taken out of another game late!! Especially after Vic goes down with a stiff back!! So we get "one-pitch" Jenkins in a left-left match up, and So Terrible out in left with his candy arm, allowing Martin (a catcher nonetheless) to score the winning run from second. And don't even get me started on the pitch arounds tonight! Hamels and Durbin have been getting the job done all year. Let them go after their hitters!

GM-Carson said...

Charlie Manuel's obsession with the intentional walk will always haunt the Phils. A game they should have won easily, lost by the manager. What a moron.
