Game Day: Campaign Cheer In Full Effect

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a 3 game set with the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park tonight at 7:05. Washington is currently in a 10-game losing streak, and the Phils have every intention of upping that gruesome total to 13 by Thursday evening. Starting tonight will be Joe Blanton (6-12, 4.79 era, 1.40 whip) for the Phils and Jason Bergmann (2-9, 4.51, 1.40) for the Nats. WSBGM's will be at the game promoting Campaign Cheer, along with some buddies from Hugging Harry Reynolds and Crashburn Alley, by handing out the flier seen below.

I originally came up with Campaign Cheer as a joke, but before I knew it the movement started and it became a real thing. Some people love the idea, some hate it, and others could care less. Now that this is really going to happen, I need to explain a few things. 1) I really want to get rid of the boo-birds. Booing doesn't help the team win by giving any homefield advantage. Therefore, let's be as loud and full of cheer for our Phils as humanly possible. Give applause and support a chance and we may just be pleasantly pleased with the outcome. 2) Although Campaign Cheer is mildly sarcastic, in no way is it meant to be about negativity. It's designed to set a positive ballpark atmosphere regardless of bad or good. Hence, the cheer for everything aspect of it. 3) Jimmy Rollins is not a villain. Am I upset about his "frontrunner comment"? Yes, but at the same time I'm still a fan of his, and will be rooting for him the rest of his days in Philly. I don't see the purpose in justifying his statement by booing even more than normal. I want to flip the script on him and give him the complete opposite reaction that he is expecting...cheers! 4) Is this a gimmick? Yes, it is, but some gimmicks serve a greater purpose and end up lasting a lifetime (see The Clapper and Chia Pet). 5) I'm doing this out of my deep rooted love for the Phils. I know I can be pessimistic and negative at times, but I want to change that, and what better way than Campaign Cheer.

An honorable cause mate. Good luck. I wish I could be there to join in.

It'll be interesting to see how many fans can put aside their angst and unconditionally cheer for the team they love.

From Phillies.com-
A .236 team batting average with a .314 on-base percentage since June 13 will allow for radical indulgence on the manager's part.

"I'm puzzled. I stay up late at night thinking about how we can get our offense going," Manuel said, before his team beat San Diego, 2-1, at PETCO Park on Sunday. "I'll listen to what anybody's got to say. Fans. Cab drivers. President Bush, anybody."

Pedro Feliz hit 2 homeruns in his rehab assignment in Reading last night. Believe it or not, the sooner he's activated from the DL the better, because Bruntlett is just plain bad with the bat.

Someone give Charlie a campaign cheer flyer.

Dude, I had a Gizmo stuffed animal when I was a kid and if you shook it, it made this crazy-ass noise. Loved that thing, but so did my dog, so no more Gizmo.

Thanks to 700Level.com for giving Campaign Cheer a plug.

I'll be at the game with a retarded sign saying "Campaign Cheer Starts Here" and a shirt saying pretty much the same thing.

Great idea! MyTeamRivals and Phightin' Phils Phorum support you 100%. I will put something in today's quick hits to try to get you more publicity!

Holy cow, Campaign Cheer made Deadspin!

I'm sorry, I just can't get behind Campaign Cheer. I respect what you guys are doing, but booing is my inherent right as a fan. I pay good money to watch millionaires get paid a ridiculous amount to perform. When they don't I boo. I won't stop. And I certainly won't let an ungrateful athlete determine how I should act at a game when I and the rest of the fans are the ones paying his salary. If you hate booing, go to St. Louis. People boo everywhere else.

Cavalier92 said...

How about when J-roll comes to bat? I'm betting Campaign Cheer gets hammered as the Phirst Phil comes to bat tonight.

I'm with Jody Mac on this one. I won't boo him, but I am sure as hell not cheering him until he does something worth cheering about.

GM-Carson said...

Stay tuned, Campaign Cheer may just be getting support from the Phillies.

Chase Trillo said...

Support from the Phillies? How about they support/boost their roster and actually give us something to cheer about.

I am with cavalier92. If I were at the game, and after his attempt at rechanging his words, I would opt not to boo J-Stroll, but like cavalier, I would not cheer him either until he does something deserving of a cheer.

Give peace a chance!

See how out of place Paul Revere's comment is in this new era of actually supporting the team?

GM-Carson said...

Yes, fans boo every where, but it doesn't help. Cheering on your team gives them a mental boost and that might be exactly what the Phils need to get the offense ignited. Booing them relentlessly has proven to be futile, so why not go the complete opposite and cheer them unconditionally.

Lake Fred said...

I'm with you Carson, cheer them when they come up to bat. Boo them only after they strike out, GIDP, pop foul out, make errors, make third outs with men on base, etc.

GM-Carson said...

Lake Fred- all cheer no jeers. I'm not booing a single Phillie tonight regardless if they hit into a game ending triple play.

Reverend Paul Revere said...

So I guess you're bringing St. Louis to Philadelphia. Sounds great.

If I wanted to act like a St. Louis fan, I'd move to St. Louis.

And if you cheer the Phillies getting into a triple play, you've just taken things a bit too far.

GM-Carson said...

I don't want the spirit of St. Louis to take over Philly, I just want to see what one night of great cheering can do for the team's morale.

EnriqueFed said...

I think they'll sense the sarcasm when you cheer them after grounding into a double play, it's worse for morale than booing would be!

Reverend Paul Revere said...

I'd rather see what last year's MVP showing up on time and actually busting it on every play would do for this team's morale. But I guess I'm just picky that way.

GM-Carson said...

Campaign Cheer has transformed since Saturday. It's now only about positive vibes, forget the sarcasm and negativity.

EnriqueFed said...

How are you sending positive vibes by cheering all plays, good and bad? I think the players will understand what's going on pretty quickly and pick up on the sarcasm when they are cheered for grounding out. Don't see how it will help, but good luck!

Chase Trillo said...

Good luck tonight (no sarcasm in that statement). The Phils couldn't ask for a better set up versus Washington. They need to show up and bring their A game versus this truly pathetic team. Do they have anyone other than Ryan Zimmerman for us to concern ourselves with?

Chase Trillo said...

Also, why do the fans have to change when management clearly won't? I wish you luck on your endeavour tonight, but it would be nice to see management step up to the plate and snag us a player or two who could actually help this club now, thus affecting their morale (and Ross isn't my idea of an upgrade - I'm thinking Aubrey Huff and Ramon Hernandez from the Orioles). Imagine those positive vibes from the fans and the message that would send to the clubhouse! Hell, they might even remember how to hit and play with a sense of urgency!

The Phan said...

Haha, I think this is a pretty good idea. Good luck with it!

GM-Carson said...

Just got phone interviewed by ESPN 950 radio in promotion of Campaign Cheer.

Malcolm said...

Ha. Deadspin picked it up. And Philly.com featured it as its lead sports story yesterday.

Pholggers +1

GM-Carson said...

Apparently ESPN 950 is buzzing with caller agreeing and disagreeing with the concept of Campaign Cheer.

The Phan said...

I put the campaign and a link to your blog in my blog to help spread the word if you guys dont mind:

wwww.phanamanda.blogspot.com

Not too many people read my blog, as I'm just getting started, but its worth a shot.

GM-Carson said...

We appreciate any support we can get, so thank you!

Reverend Paul Revere said...

Aubrey Huff would be perfect. The guy can play outfield, third and even first when Howard needs a spell. Makes too much sense (and money) for the Phils to get him.

GM-Carson said...

Huff makes a ton of sense. Plug him into 3rd base, make Feliz a super-sub, and watch the lineup come back to life. Doubtful this trade would happen though, wishful thinking.

Without Huff the Phils will erupt tonight, just watch!

GM-Carson said...

Alright, I'm off to the game to promote this thing. Guess we'll see how it goes...

I'd just mentioned the campaign on my mlblog. I'm just hoping that the whole thing will work out in the end, especially since I doubt the fanbase can last too long without going negative. I guess we'll know by the time the Phils go back on the road after the series with the Mets. Keeping fingers firmly crossed.

The way they're playing, I think it's ok to show our dissatisfaction with the team.

okay, i'm booing already...

i'm at work (hence, not at CBP promoting the campaign), was carson's ugly mug on tv? somebody who saw it please give me the scoop. thanks.

furiousBall said...

yep they showed him in front of CBP handing out the flyers, he said somethings, but I didn't pay attention, I was staring at his titties.

i saw a brown haired dude standing next to him that i thought was you, my bad

BloodStripes said...

Top win Phils! Yeah!!!

GM-Carson said...

I was interviewed by Comcast and Fox News.

Gotta say, the reaction to J-Roll at first wasn't too bad, but did sour as the game went on. However, it felt like the crowd was cheering extra hard for every other player other than J-Roll. Campaign Cheer was met with some enthusiasm. Many people said they read about it online and others heard about it on the radio and what not. Hugging Harry Reynolds showed up and helped hand out fliers. I'm happy, the Phils won, and this positive vibe idea might just be getting started.
