From the Mouth of Charlie Manuel & Others

Philadelphia Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel dropped some nice quotes following yesterday's sickening extra inning 1-run low scoring loss to the Marlins. Here's how Chuck summed it up...

"We're not hitting the baseball. Our situational hitting is absolutely terrible. Off the chart, really. The guys might be trying too hard, and it seems like when you remind them to make sure you get [the runner] over, all of a sudden, they don't do it."

*Situational hitting, what a novel idea.

"Also, we strike out a lot. People don't realize, we have a different lineup than we had last year. We have different people. And just one guy makes a difference. It's called execution, and hitting the ball in the right place. When we don't do that, it's going to be hard for us to win."

*Missing Aaron Rowand, added Geoff Jenkins and Pedro Feliz.

"That was big. When your pitcher pitches like that, you have to win the game."

*Cole Hamels continues to get screwed by the offense.

From Jimmy Rollins' dumb mouth- "You don't get concerned until you don't have a chance, then it's too late. There really is no room for concern. Coaches do that. That's their job. We got out and play. As long as we have a ball or a bat in our hand, we got a chance to rewrite the story."

*Oh, it's way past time to get concerned J-Roll. You at the top of this piddling offense that sucks better be concerned!

From Cole Hamels enlightening mouth- "It's just one of those things where the time off hurt me. My whole body was tighter, and because of that, I couldn't really push it. If I would've pushed it, I would've probably been on the disabled list."

*Glad we gave him those extra two days rest, that must have made him all the tighter (where the hell's his chiropractor?!). Hamels should have started on Friday.

Ways to Lose:
The Phils are awesome at night time, churning out 41 wins to only 27 losses. The rest of the time they pretty much suck: 12-19 in day games, 15-18 in 1-run games, 4-6 in extra innings, and 4-11 in InterLeague games.

Catching the July swoon- Carlos Ruiz 3-25, .120 avg, .433 OPS and Chris Coste 4-32, .125 avg, .313 OPS. That sucks!

Again, I will call for Manuel's firing. I know I am in the minority, but nothing (and I mean nothing) ever changes with this team. Defend him all you want, but he continues to make too many mistakes as a manager. Also, how many times do we have to listen to Charlie stumble through excuse after excuse? If I were GM, I'd fire him to light a real burning fire under the asses of some of these underperforming players! They hear what they want to hear from Manuel and he isn't the type to really set them straight. I've never seen the "tough guy" he is made out to be.

BTW, wouldn't have Bisenius been a better option to keep around over Cervenak? I mean Condrey has just moved up a rung and now Eaton is low man on the totem pole. I'd take Bisenius over both! DFA Eaton now!

Wasted roster spots:

That is unacceptable on a team with playoff aspirations!!

Also, I have really soured on J-Roll. His attitude SUCKS!! If Manuel had any stones, he'd sit him, even if the Mets are next!! He'd sit the first two games if it were up to me. The lack of hustle on Vic's double and the lame ass comments about turning it on later just don't cut it! BTW, it's hardly the first time he has dogged it, or been quoted "j-rolling" out the excuses! Great leader huh? Sit him and then bring him back in the 6 hole!!

GM-Carson said...

I like Jimmy Rollins, but his attitude has become aloof. I'm tired of this team's attitude.

By the way Chase Trillo, won't catch me or Corey defending Charlie Manuel.

prepare for a humiliating sweep by the mets... i hate saying that. *shudder*

Jimmy definitely is a great guy and good player, but I agree his lack of hustle is getting more and more ludicrous the worse he plays.

And as far as Ruiz and Coste, Rod Barajas is actually having a halfway decent year—8 hr, 29 RBIs in 62 games. I hate that guy.

GM-Carson said...

Coste started off hot, but has cooled to the point where I think he's cryogenically frozen. Ruiz has sucked the entire season.

Bob D said...

Pretty soon I will be in favor of trading the future and entire minor leagues for Holiday and Fuentes. As long as they throw in a catcher and a few Holiday bobbleheads then we are set.

Ruiz is having a bad year, but he is not the only problem on offense. Coste has been slumping recently but he is an average or slightly above major league catcher. Both have good defense with good arms, Coste does have a little advantage over ruiz there.

Time to replace So "horrible" Taguchi!

I'm not sure what to make of this team right now. The fact that they're still in 1st place, albetit tied with the Mets, astounds me. I see the Phils squandering the NL East lead to the Mets starting Tuesday night. Negative outlook? Absolutely!

GM-Carson said...

From Zolecki-
In the last 30 games, the Phillies are 12-18 and have averaged just 3.97 runs per game. To put that in perspective, the Phillies averaged 5.41 runs per game in their first 69 games, in which they went 41-28. And for anybody who thinks 1.44 runs per game isn't much a difference, it is a huuuuuuge difference. The Chicago Cubs lead the National League, averaging 5.29 runs per game. The San Diego Padres are last in the league, averaging 3.79 runs per game.

*That's very shitty!

I don't even want to think about hearing Mets fans rant and rave about their "amazing team" and "Flithadelphia" tonight. This offense flat out sucks and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they got swept especially with the new guy and the rock star being the first two guys they send out to the mound. My eternal Phillies pessimism is telling me that this is the beginning of a very long rest of the season.

GM-Carson said...

I'm not sure what to think of this "fire Charlie Manuel" movement. Part of me says "hell yes, axe him!", but the other part of me says "is it really his fault, and would it make a difference anyway?". Here's the thing though, his job is safe for the rest of the season whether we like it or not.

Reverend Paul Revere said...

For the record, I'm going to a Mets-Phils game Aug. 26 with one of my bosses who works from his home in New York. He's coming down that week to the Philly office, and he's a Mets fan.

Point of all this? I will probably be fired by the time the third inning rolls around.

GM-Carson said...

If your boss is a Mets fan, then is worth getting fired.

SirAlden said...

As Frank Perdue once said...

"It takes a tough man to Fuck a frozen chicken!"

Lets go Phillies! Tire tracks up the Mets backs.

Bob D said...

Reverend Paul Revere, will you be just fired or will you do something to him that merits an arrest?

I work with a couple of New Yorkers, so work place violence could be on the rise this week.

Bob D said...

I love that picture of JRoll.

A poll done over on

Should the Phillies use a defensive replacement for Burrell late in games?
Yes, he has no range and puts games at risk
169 (12.3%)
No, we need his bat
1207 (87.7%)
Total votes = 1376

GM-Carson said...

Looks like 12.3% of the population is retarded.

Reverend Paul Revere said...

Bob d, due to some legal matters, violence is unfortunately not an option.
But if I could...

God I hate the Mets.

GM-Carson said...

Relievers that are linked to Phils- Pirates' John Grabow and Damaso Marte. Either would be fine with me, but hopefully it wouldn't cost a buttload.

GreggyD said...

Oh hell I swore that the Phillies played tonight. What am I supposed to do with my night now?

As for firing Manuel..I still don't think it's his fault that this team (especially Jimmy Rollins) comes up short over and over again at the plate. I've never been a fan of the "don't blame the manager" way of thinking but right now I am thinking like that. The situational hitting sucks but he's not the one stepping up to the plate and striking out. He does make dumb decisions and if he pulls Burrell one more time I might shoot my television, but if this is the kind of manager the players want in the clubhouse, maybe they should suck it up and learn how to consistently hit a baseball. If they fail to make the playoffs though, Manuel might be on his way out, especially with a new GM (good lord please not Amaro or Arbuckle) coming in.

Bob D said...

Why would Burrell resign with the Phils? I bet there are a half of a dozen teams that would take him and play him for the entire game instead of missing out on the 90+ at bats during the season. He'd probably have 25hrs, 72 rbis by now.

GreggyD said...

I guarantee that any AL team would love to shell out money and stick Pat at the DH spot. Plus, he can play LF or 1B. He's very valuable to a team like that. Golson is much cheaper than Burrell. This team needs pitching in the offseason.
