Father's Day Rundown

Is there a better day in the year than today? The tv schedule is full of sports and us men have a perfect excuse to do nothing but sit on our butts and watch. Sure, the wife can try to make you do work around the house, but once you drop the Father's Day trump card, the discussion is over and you're back on the recliner. So, to help out all the dad's set their itinerary, here's what is on tap...

2:00 - CWS - Fresno St. v. Rice (ESPN) - PING!

2:10 - Phils v. Cards - The Phils send their opening day starter to the hill versus a rookie (Mitchell Boggs) making only his second major league start. Two months ago this would have looked like a Phils cakewalk. Now, I think the Cardinals should be the favorite. Yesterday I set the over/under on when you would wish for some "leftover" runs from the previous game. Today I set the over/under on when you say, "Brett Myers, you [insert favorite insult here]." The O/U - 4th inning.

2:45 - Euro 2008 - Turkey v. Czech Republic (ESPN2) - The winner advances from Group A into the the quarterfinals.

2:45 - Euro 2008 - Switzerland v. Portugal (ESPN Classic) - This game has no implications whatsoever and probably should not be watched by anyone who is not Swiss or Portuguese.

3:00 - U.S. Open (NBC) - The tournament airs at 3, but don't bother tuning in until 4:30 because that's when Tiger tees off. If you missed that round yesterday, shame on you. Don't make the same mistake today.

7:00 - CWS - LSU v. North Carolina (ESPN2) - PING! PING!

8:00 - Braves v. Angels (ESPN) - Don't miss a chance to watch the Braves lose.

9:00 - Celtics v Lakers (ABC) - The Celtics try to clinch the NBA Championship. Personally, I hate both of these organizations. However, I do like KG and Kobe Bryant is my least favorite athlete in sports now that Barry Bonds has been blackballed retired. Go Celtics.

The term "black balled" and Barry Bonds in the same sentence has a funny double connotation.

A Phils win today would make for a successful road trip of 6-3, which is pretty damn good considering the teams they faced.

I can't be hopeful for a win today with Myers setting foot on the mound, but maybe he'll surprise all of us. I'm stuck at work until 3:00, but the rest of my day will be filled with baseball, golf, and basketball. Not that I have the trump card to play, but then again, I don't have a wife to tell me to do anything either.

Happy Father's Day to all you dads in the most tight-knit blogging community on the net here at WSBGM's.

I'll put a dime on the under.

Just checking out some team stats in the NL.. The Phils have stolen 46 bases and have only been caught 7 times. You are the man, Davey Lopes. Keep'm runnnin.

GM-Carson said...

There's no denying that the Phils have become much better at stealing bases since Davey Lopes addition as 1st base coach.

GM-Carson said...

Why can't Howard do this more often?

Brett Myers, you jackass.

GreggyD said...

And once again, a Phillies starter can't get through the first inning without giving up a run. Good lord I hate Brett Myers.

Im starting to believe they should have Chad Durbin warming in the 1st inning for every Brett Myers start.

What time does Tiger tee off again?

Happy Father's Day to Collier Chase's Pater Familias, and all the other Phillies Phanatic Dads out there.

Take the kids in the backyard, hit some fungos off their shins, make them take 100 swings from each side of the plate, and after dinner have one alcoholic beverage of your choice , and go up to the Master Bedroom and make another Philly Fan and Phuture Potential Draft Pick.

Just make sure it's with the Mrs's and not the babysitter, or her sister.... or.....well! you get the idea.

It can not be overstated how much I hate Brett Myers this season.

6 runs, 6 innings, 2 homers...what a butt-plugging pole-smoker!

Way to turn a promising road trip into a shitty one. Sweep the Braves, then lose to the Marlins an Cardinals...blah! Tom Gordon is douchebag.

Should have Myers start the game in the 2nd inning, have Durbin pitch the 1st.

GreggyD said...

Since Tom Gordon couldn't find a way to lose the game on the mound, he didn't want to disappoint us and managed to blow it with his glove. The 2 losses in the StL series are the kinds of games that come back to haunt you.

still a respectable 5-4 trip. But they threw this one away literally. They could have gone 7-2 but they let 2 games go they should've won.

Two losses in St. Louis with two shitty umpiring calls! The night before you get the "trap catch" on the hit by Jenkins (not saying the Phillies would have wound up winning, but give them the chance!). And today you get the play at the plate! It's a shame that Molina nearly got killed, but I didn't think replays showed he got the tag around before he was knocked silly. It wasn't a force at the plate, he needs to apply the tag!

But let's look at other craptastic moments in the game that were the Phillies fault. Coste swung at a pitch that didn't even start in the zone to strike out, rather than allow the tying run (at that point) to be walked home. Bruntlett gets put into the game as a pinch runner for Dobbs (why?!) and immediately responds by breaking back toward second on a hit (could he have scored? I don't know, but I do know that running the opposite direction of home is not the way to go).

Now we get to deal with the Red Sox and the most annoying fans in baseball. Hopefully the fans give Francona the kind of reception he deserves...

Wait! I didn't even touch on the shitfest that was the defense in the 10th inning. The first error was clearly Utley's fault, and the seeming replay was Gordon's fault for not catching the ball. But missing in all of this is that the second baseman is twice trying to make throws the pitcher charging to cover first base (to compare it to football, it's like hitting a receiver going across the middle). Where was the first baseman during all of this?! Ugh... I know Howard was better at the plate the last two days, but his defense (when he gets to a ball or doesn't) makes me want to retch.

Myers is a home run champ.

BloodStripes said...

....and now we have to deal with crap nation. Please Phils kick their arse.

Bob D said...

twice this year Bruntlett was the pinch runner and made mistakes that potentially cost them a win. 3 ump errors and several philly errors also contributed to the 2 losses.

HR leaders: Utley 22, Myers 20, Burrell 18, Howard 17.
SO leaders: Volquez 105, CC Sabathia 97, Howard 95.

LOL! Nice stats Bob. With numbers like that Howard would match CC for big man mound power and maybe its time Myers hit cleanup.
