Phlashback Phriday

Mike Benjamin - the muttonchopped Phucco.

Obviously, Score handed out the "Rising Star" designation like nitrous balloons at a Dave Matthews Band concert - every loser gets one. He was never any good. Benjamin never hit over .260 in the minors before getting a call-up and then spent parts of his first 5 big league seasons in the minors, only solidifying a permanent gig with the Giants in '94. Yet, Benjamin worked a career .229 average into 12 years and $5 million.

The Phils traded pitching phenom Jeff Juden to SF for Benjamin after the 1995 season. The previous year, Benjamin hit .220. Surprisingly, he hit only .223 with the Phillies and was not re-signed.

He then played two seasons in Boston, hitting .270 the last year. So, in typical Pirates fashion, they signed a guy who had hit like a Abe Nunez for the last 9 years to a four year contract. The results? Pitiful. He didn't even play one year because of injury, finally flaming out in 2002 after hitting .150.

Also, according to wikipedia, "Him and his wife Sherry also have been known to have an explicit video on the internet." So, he has that, and the 5 mil, going for him.

Swindle Update
19 games, 28 IP, 2 ER, 29 K, 2BB, 0.64 ERA. Still with the FeHams...

Burrell Sleeps With Dogs
Pat the Bat missed Tuesday's game with neck stiffness. The origin of said stiffness? “I blame the dog,” Burrell said, referring to his 115-pound English bulldog, Elvis. “He had the pillow.”

Benson Update
Benson gave up one run in four innings on Tuesday in an extended spring-training game. He threw over 70 pitches and by reports his fastball was between 86 and 90. He's scheduled to make a minor league start Sunday for Clearwater.

"He progressed well. It was encouraging for him, and it was encouraging for us," said Ruben Amaro Jr.

Any coincidence that encouraging news about Kris Benson comes out just prior to Eaton pitching his best game of the year on Wednesday? Yeah, probably totally coincidental, the Rockies just suck right now and it is a great time to pitch against Colorado. But a little competition can't hurt. It will be interesting to follow Benson's progress in a few minor league starts and how the talk of replacing Eaton escalates.

No reports on whether Anna Benson will be at his start on Sunday...

Replace Eaton.

BloodStripes said...

Big series coming up. Win it and the Phils take the lead. Lets go Phightin's!

GM-Carson said...

Replace Eaton? How about replace Myers? He's been a bigger disappointment than Eaton so far, but that's like comparing the lesser of two evils.

I'm hyped up for this Marlins series, and that's a fun feeling.

BloodStripes said...

Yeah Myers has been crap. Danger for game 1 but the offense is on and can save him.

GM-Carson said...

Myers has great stuff, he just needs to get better in the mental aspect of the game. He's a hothead that has ADHD, and that ends up hurting him a few times nearly every start.

BloodStripes said...

Its alright to fire up as closer in a 10 minute spot to try and end a game but when your starting and going for a couple of hours you gotta stay cool, calm and collected. He should take some chill medicine just before he walks to the mound. Thats what Rich Dubee is there for right? Spread the love Rich. D ganja mon.

Myers has a bigger upside if he reverts to the norm. He's still not a #1 based on career numbers, but Myers is better than Eaton. Myers needs to get the curveball over for strikes to be successful. His curve is nasty. When he's working it, the speed of the fast ball is not as big an issue.

It's shaping up to be a great baseball weekend in Philly. A pair of wins puts the Phils in first.

Temps in the low 80s tonight, sunny and the forecast calls for 100% chance of excessive cleaveage at McFadden's pregame.

Gotta love baseball.

I hope Myers takes his Adderall tonight or else he'll need to put on the harness and helmet.

GM-Carson said...

Saturday is supposed to be warm and humid...hello homeruns. And the Marlins and Phils are tops in the Majors in that category.

Stephanie Grace said...

Chase Utley homers...not Dan Uggla homers.

Let's hope Uggla chases some pitches out of the zone with his 30% strikeout percentage.

it's also supposed to rain all day saturday...hello tarp.

GM-Carson said...

Now how are they supposed to play with a tarp on the field?

Remember slip-n-slides?

I think the fear with Swindle is that major league hitting will hit that 50mph curve and low 80s fastball like it was served up on a platter. Obviously you can't deny the stats, and the lack of homers against. The blemish years on his record seem to be when he was a starter, and with the exception of Class A last year, he's been absolutely lights as a reliever. I guess it couldn't hurt to give the guy a shot.

GM-Carson said...

At the expense of Clay Condrey, RJ Swindle most definetely deserves a shot.

Corey said...

head over to beerleaguer, they have a link to an article about swindle. after reading that, i'm even more on the RJ bandwagon.

if jamie moyer was in the minor leagues, would he get a look or would they say, "he doesn't throw hard enough, blah, blah, blah."???

this idea of "fast good, slow bad" is caveman mentality and another reason why "we should be gm's"

GM-Carson said...

Damn straight brotha man! We should be GM's!!!

Corey said...

actually, the "we" referred to bloodstripes and me, so...

ripjgarcia said...

So far as Clay Condrey goes, why exactly do we have this guy? His sole role has been as a reliever when we are up by ten. And he STILL gives up runs. He is at best a batting practice pitcher.

GM-Carson said...

Until someone is available that's better than Condrey, I understand his purpose. He is the mop-up man, blow-out guy...wow, sounds like he works on the set of a porno. Stevel Kline in Triple A may be better and I imagine he'll get a chance soon, or Josh Outman from Reading, or my choice and others' RJ Swindle.

From a good article written by David Murphy about the Phils rotation:
Here are the numbers as of today:

1) The Phils rotation is 12th out of 16 National League staffs with a 4.59 ERA.

2) Phillies starters have allowed opponents to score 181 runs, the third worst mark in the league.

3) Opposing batters are hitting .282 off of Phillies starters. Only Pittsburgh has a worse mark.

4) Phillies starters are giving up an average of 1.43 walks and hits per inning pitched, ninth in the NL.

5) Phillies starters have combined for 17 wins, tied for eighth in the NL.

On the other hand. . .

Phillies starters have pitched more innings than every NL club except St. Louis. So as mediocre-to-poor as their numbers may be, the fact remains that they are staying in games, and they are handing the ball to the bullpen with a chance to win.

Here's a stat that I find fairly impressive: since losing to the Nationals 11-6 on Opening Day, the Phillies haven't allowed an opponent to score double digits in runs. Conversely, the Mets, who have one of the better staff ERA's in the league, have allowed opponents to score in double digits six times. The Braves, also among the NL Leaders, have done so three times.

To me, that means Phillies pitchers are keeping the team in games.

*Shows how bad they've been, but reliable at the same time.

At least the Phils actually have some backup options when it comes to pitching this year ...

7 spot!

I still hate Brett Myers though. He is a HOT mess.

GM-Carson said...

Maria- what are you, on Clean House?

Phils kicking ass, F' the Marlins.

Over the course of the series with the Marlins, I will be having an ongoing battle with a Fish blogger at thesouthfloridafan.blogspot.com and libertyball.net. He's very educated about the game and I definitely had fun tonight. Check it out and feel free to make some comments.

BloodStripes said...

You got it Corey. We ARE GM's mate! Ha!

I love Spammers, they drive up my hits and comments.

Great win the the Phils last night. Offense is kickin' and Brett Myers looked awesome following the rough 1st inning.
