Douchebags On Parade

Nationally televised Wednesday night game on ESPN and we've got our douchebags on parade. Brett Myers and Ryan Howard stole the show last night. Yes, Chipper Jones may have more hits than at bats (is that possible?) and Tom Glavine won his 900th game, but Myers and Howard captivated the audience with their ability to single-handedy (well, actually I guess it would be double-handedly in this case) blow the game. Undeserving title holder of #1 starter Brett Myers has been a complete and utter train wreck this season. Through 9 starts the immature, whiny, hothead has a 5.91 era with 15 homeruns allowed; that's a pace for 59 homers and the weather hasn't even warmed up yet. Last night he allowed 3 solo shots with 9 hits and 3 walks for 8 runs overall through 4.1 agonizing innings. 2 of those 8 runs were unearned and that's where douchebag #2 steps up. We all know of Ryan Howard's struggles at the plate (just look to the top right of this blog for his Mendoza Line counter), but he has and always will be a DH playing firstbase. Howard dropped a throw that would have completed a double play that hit him square in the middle of his mitt. Is it really that difficult to catch a ball? Seriously, I've seen people wrangle up greased pigs better than Howard scoops up balls.

Despite the handy work of the Howard and Myers, there were some positives to take away from last night: Chris Coste was 4-4, Utley nailed his 14th roundtipper, the bullpen worked 4.2 scoreless innings, and the Phils almost came back from an 8 run deficit.

Rubber game tonight with King Cole (4-3, 3.36) vs. Chuck James (2-2, 7.58), they better damn well win!

How does Myers share the clubhouse with Rollins, Utley, Coste, Werth and the bullpen? Add Dobbs, too.
Myers is either injured or simply not prepared mentally and physically.

The rest of the team never gave up, never do, even after Myers did. And they almost pulled off the win. Those of us who stayed last night were treated to the emotional heart of the team fighting to the end.

If only we could have skipped over Victorino last night to Utley. You know he would have gotten the single.

Error aside, Howard looks much better.

Why was Victorino swinging for the fences? A single would have tied the game.

I swear harry really is going senile ,you could tell has soon as shane hit it that he got underneath it and harry 's calling it like its got a shot, plus chase pulled a long foul ball earlier in the game and harry was ready to call that gone, sure it was liitle closer to the line, but jeez harry...... As i stated on BL, no more f'n in game interviews with t-mac and has been former gymnasts(Kerri strugg) and there creepy coaches Bela (whatever the hell is name is) it just getting out of hand!,...... Also King Cole please give us 9 quality innings tonight the BP and my bloodpressure could really use it!

The return of Tom McCarthy to the Phils booth has been an annoying disappointment. I hate the stupid in-game interviews, worthless!

Myers has sulked publicly about returning to the rotation, has had many disagreements with the coaching staff about his conditioning and game plan. Personally, I'm sick and tired of him, he's acting like a child in a man's body.

Howard does look better at the plate (thank God!), but his defense is still horrendous.

From Jayson Stark's Rumblings & Grumblings:
WAITING FOR MR. BENSON: Teams that have spoken with the Phillies report they've stepped up efforts to find a rotation upgrade over the exasperating Adam Eaton. Kris Benson was supposed to be that upgrade, but he's stuck in rehab limbo. And with his June 1 opt-out deadline approaching, the Phillies may have to mull moving on if Benson doesn't start progressing.

*You could probably insert Brett Myers where Adam Eaton's name appears, because both have been horrible.

Myers is a disgrace. Our offense can only produce so much, they can't dig us out of every hole he buries them in.

Not that I got to see the "nationally televised" game on ESPN because Comcast blacked it out. (I have DirectTV)

New Reader - You guys are great, btw.

Stephanie- welcome to the fold, and keep the comments and especially the compliments coming.

Myers is quickly becoming hated by Philly sports fans, and that's a shame. He needs to come out next start and lockdown the opposing team.

Great Mets game today. Two idiotic baserunning plays by Reyes and Beltran in the 8th and 9th innings, respectively, allowed the Nats to sneak a 1-0 win out of the getaway game. Warms my heart...

You're right in saying that the fans are really starting to get irritated by Myers and his lack of success on the mound and I generally agree that it kind of sucks, but personally I am getting tired of saying, "He needs to come out next start and lockdown the opposing team."

It seems like every five days I find myself thinking that. Myers has been an utter disappointment this year. I understand that he loved being the closer, but he needs to suck it up and do what this team needs most or else he's not the guy I thought he was. I saw him as a team player last year when he willingly moved to the bullpen, but I can't deal with this not wanting to be in the rotation crap.

Another brilliant comment from ESPN's front page:

"Move Brett Myers back to the 'pen and let Chad Durbin start for a change."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not on the Myers bandwagon right now, but I think this is a bit of a stretch. To whomever said this: Please recall that if Myers would go to the pen, Jamie Moyer would become your number 2. I love brilliant people...

It's fantastic to see the ace pitch like one... too bad the opening day starter sucked shit like a septic tank vacuum last night.

Now let's see the Blue Jays drop a few games in Philly this weekend.
