Breakout

Saturday through Tuesday = 4 games/9 runs. Wednesday = 1 game/12 runs. This constitutes as a breakout. Ryan Howard goes yard twice mixing in a double and climbs closer to the Mendoza Line (.195). Shane Victorino started his 3rd game in a row despite being told Jayson Werth was a "starter" and had 3 hits as well, including a homerun. Out Machine Pedro Feliz also went deep and chipped in 3 hits like Howard and Vic. Coste, Utley, and Rollins were invited to the hit-fest too, dumping 2 hits a piece. Overall, it was a well played game in all facets (defense, pitching, offense, base running) and therefore was entertaining. Jamie Moyer handled the bulk of the pitching weaving his way in and out of trouble most of the night to notch his 4th victory over 6 shutout innings; Jars of Clay Condrey finished out the contest. Pat Burrell and Jayson Werth were the only 2 regulars to not breakout, in fact they had a breakdown. Burrell's average continues to plummet (.271) and Werth hasn't had a hit since his fabled 3 homerun game (0-13 with 7 k's).

It's nice to win a series, feels like it's been awhile. Now off to Houston for a 4 game set where Lidge and Bruntlett are excited to visit old friends and show that their new team is better than their old one, and Michael Bourn waits to burn the bases (20 sb) when he actually gets on base (.208 avg/.272 OB%).

You make me dizzy,
Running circles in my head.
One of these days,
I'll chase you down.
Well look who's going crazy now?
We're face to face my friend.
Better get out.
Better get out!
You know you make me breakout!
Make me breakout!
I don't wanna look like that,
I don't wanna look like that.
Know you make me breakout.

The Astros offense is killing right now. Tejada, Berkman, and Lee are on fire. Berkman, Bourn, and Matsui are burning up the basepaths too. Should be a good series, and I expect a lot of homeruns for both clubs.

Happy Birthday to Phormer Phucco Jose Mesa who turns 73 today.

I will never understand how Berkman, or any man his size, can burn the basepaths.

And by I'll never understand I mean, it seems like I weigh 100 lbs less than him and he'd still beat me in a race around the diamond by a mile.

It's time to send Clay Condrey to the minors or release him and give someone else a chance.

There's a left-handed reliever in the Phils organization who has breezed through all levels and is only 24 years old with career minor league stats of a 9-3 record, 83 games, 166 IP, only 18 walks, 186 k's, 1.46 era, and a sparkling 0.84 WHIP. Added bonus, only 3 homeruns surrendered. His name? RJ Swindle!

Funny joke I read on BeerLeaguer:

Q: How many Mets does it take to do the laundry?

A: Only one, but it takes all 25 to fold

Weird how Howard and Burrell seem to get hot at opposite times ...

3 out of 4 is what we need. If Kendrick can out pitch Oswalt and win tonight, with Hamels on Sunday we have a good shot at winning this series.

Of course the offense has to stay alive.

How many Phillies does it take to change a light bulb?

None. Because tough guys aren't afraid of the dark.

Pat the bat sending one deep. Yeah!! Hold on now Phils.

Howard is back. This past week has been good. A slump buster of week. 6 for 10 with 3 homers the last 2 games. He is ready to charge towards 50 homers. Go big man!

Fantastic to start the Houston series with a win. The Phillies just need to keep winning series and things will take care of themselves!

Burrell chips in a pinch-hit homer, and Howard goes 3-5... raising his average to a lofty .207! And how about Lidge? Was his adrenaline flowing or what? Against Bourn batter his fastball was hitting 97 on the radar gun.

Will Taguchi now replace Howard on the Mendoza watch? 170 for Guchi vs 207 for Howard

Victorino has quietly risen his BA to 263 now, and Rollins has been on fire since his return with lots of hits.

GM-Carson said...

Taguchi is a turd that needs flushed.

Howard has had an awesome 2 games.

Winning series is the way to go for sure, but I'd love to see the Phils sweep someone this year (hasn't been done yet).

A pinch-hit homerun for Burrell might just get him back on track.

Kendrick looked rough, but we won, so Go Phils!

Jayson Stark's Rumblings & Grumblings about locking up young players longterm:
Ryan Howard-Cole Hamels: Since Howard and Hamels are teammates in Philadelphia, it's convenient to link their situations. But aside from the fact that their GM, Pat Gillick, is a conscientious long-contract objector, they're separate cases.

Howard is a unique player in baseball history, looking for an Alex Rodriguez-type payday. So he and the Phillies barely have been in the same solar system, no matter how long a contract they've tried to talk about.

Then came Howard's historic $10 million arbitration award this spring. And here's the irony in that development: It almost single-handedly terrified other teams into locking up as many young centerpiece players as possible before they even sniffed arbitration. But it pushed Howard and the Phillies only further apart -- with no happy ending in sight.

Hamels, however, has a different set of issues. For one thing, he's a pitcher. And Gillick's long-standing policy is not to guarantee more than three years for any pitcher.

But Hamels also is a guy who never has stayed healthy wire to wire in any of his six professional seasons. So even with Gillick's retiring after this year, the ace he'll leave behind will have to demonstrate more staying power before the Phillies start firing any long-term offers at him.

Dude - I LOVED Breakout for the Atari 2600 ... also Raiders of the Lost Ark ... probably the best game ever made for the 2600.

GM-Carson said...

I never played much Atari, I was an original Nintendo product, with Bubble Bobble being my favorite game of all-time. In fact I downloaded it on my Wii.

Mame 32 is good software for games like Bubble Bobble, 10 Yard Fight, 1942 etc. Galagga. Good fun.
