Witness.

We were all excited for opening day, but that pales in comparison to today's action...the 2008 debut for Gavin Eaton.

As Eaton begins what could be a season of historic greatness, I think it is worth keeping an eye on how close he is to some all-time numbers.

Wins - 64. He is only 236 short of 300.

K - 763, a mere 2237 away from 3000.

*At his current pace, Eaton will reach 300 wins and 3000 Ks midway through 2035 season. Whether the Phils can lock him up long-term is another question.

Saves - Eaton has yet record a save in his career, but if the Phils would move him to the pen like they did with Myers last year (we all know having your best pitcher throw four times a week is better than only one), Eaton should have a shot at the single season save record. [It may be too late in his career for the all-time saves record.]

Game Preview
Eaton faces Aaron Harang today in Cincy. Harang has won 32 games in the last two years, finished fourth in the Cy Young voting in 2006. He's obviously no match for Eaton. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Harang trying to get Eaton's autograph sometime before the game.
Prediction: Phils win 4-0, Eaton goes the distance allowing only a broken-bat single and striking out 12.

Aaron has way too many vowels in his name. Adam, a respectable two.

Myers, Moyer, and Kendrick all had poor starts. Watch Eaton surprise the hell out of us and actually turn in a quality outing.

By the way, a WSBGM's favorite Shane Victorino better start hitting. He's looked horrible besides his two bunts. His swing is bad and he keeps popping everything up.

Putting a fly-ball pitcher like Eaton into a bandbox like Great American Ballpark with a lineup containing nasty lefties Griffey and Dunn...it's almost like a perfect storm of bad, bad things.

Vic will turn it on soon. he gave us that important insurance run in the 9th yesterday even though romero made his outing look easy and didnt need it. by the way you forgot about eaton's power. after his homerun last year in florida he now has 3 career homeruns, a mere 760 from breaking the all time home run record.

I don't see why the Phils don't use Eaton as their #1 starter AND their closer. He certainly has the durability to be used every day.

He can be limited to three innings on each of his days of rest. Eaton can still be used as a pinch-hitter and pinch-runner, as Fuqua will use his proficiency with the double-switch to insert Eaton at the right time.

If Eaton has 64 wins, he is only 236 short of 300. That should take him about 8 seasons, but he'll price himself out of the Phillies' plans long before that. Hopefully, the Phils can package Howard and Eaton in a three-way day that nets them Gavin Floyd and C.J. Henry.

Gavin Floyd, oh how I miss thee.

Nope, not true.

Gavin Floyd believes this will be his breakout year, he tells reporters: "I've finally put it all together."

No one ever doubted Floyd had natural talent to pitch, the problem with him was that he was at best a pussy and at worst was a thumb-sucking-rock-himself-to-sleep-while-crying head case.

Did you see that first pitch from Eaton????? He can't even get the ball to the damn plate. And now he walks him on 4 pitchers. This guy is such a damn clown.

Jacobin said...

Four-pitch walk from Gavin Eaton to start his "redemption" season! He shouldn't even be in a major league stadium tossing bags of peanuts as a vendor.

I HATE Adam Eaton.

Jacobin said...

I learned something on the fantasy site today... make sure when making lineup changes for today, the roster date is actually today.

Adam Eaton thrives on your hate. He channels such feelings into a shitty ERA. And if you cheer for him, he uses that to generate a lousy ERA too. Okay, he just sucks.

Tim Lehay's fine Phillie career has come to the end, as he was designated for assignment.

His ERA and hits allowed stats put to shame those compiled by Gordon and company in the pen. In zero appearances: he has no ERA, no hits allowed, no runs scored, and best of all no walks. The only cost for the Phils was 1 week/weak salary, and a plane ticket to Cincinatti.

Hmm, I really like that "We are all witnesses" fake Nike ad. I think it really captures the essence of Charles Fuqua Manuel and Eaton at the same time. Can we get a full-size version of that appropriate for desktop wallpaper? I could see that taking the place of Babe Ruth on my laptop's background right now.

Also, sweet Lord, never ever ever let Greg Dobbs bat against Aaron Harang. I mean, wow.

Dear Kent Merker,

Thank you for that nice fat pitch.

Love,

Ryan Howard

Adam Eaton: 7 IP, 3 hits and only 2 ER.

And Ryan Howard just hit a mammoth homerun. (off a LH pitcher!)

And the 3-4-5 hitters all have one RBI.

chalk another loss up to our inferior bullpen...

here is the full sized pic of the "witness" eaton/manuel. it really shows the limitations of my psuedo-photoshop freeware when you blow it up that big. oh well...

Over on BeerLeaguer before game time I called the 7 innings from Eaton. He sucked early, but was alright overall. Bad O and bad 'pen lost it, not Eaton.

Jacobin said...

I'm pleasantly surprised that Adam Eaton, the turd that he is, turned in a decent pitching performance... too bad we lose the game. I know the guy probably scores in the ninth, but what was Jimmy doing throwing to first? The only play is at the plate!!!

GM-Carson said...

Not only has this team made too many errors in the beginning of the season, they're also not making the plays they need to. Many grounders finding their way through the infield, many throws that have been off-line to make a play at the plate, very disappointing defense. I blame that on coaching. Instead of being buddy-buddy in Florida, how about training their asses? That's what it's called spring TRAINING, not spring funtime.

Mike said...

I'm still an Eaton-Hater, but he wasn't bad today. A few more starts like that, and Feliz or Gordon might take over as my least favorite Phillie.

Myers and Hamels will win the next two.

GM-Carson said...

Mike- don't feel bad for continuing to hate Eaton, he deserves it. One good game doesn't erase a season of awful ones.

GM-Carson said...

From MLBTR-
According to an FSN broadcast via RotoWorld, the Marlins acquired Wes Helms from the Phils for cash. So I guess that means the Fish were willing to take on the $2.9MM owed to him? If so, quite a commitment for them.

*Why would the Marlins do that? Now watch Helms beat us a few times this year.

GM-Carson said...

Greg Golson had a good game in Double A yesterday- three hits, including a triple, and four stolen bases Saturday for Double-A Reading.

GM-Carson said...

Wow, lighting struck twice in the same day. Eaton pitched well- 3 runs in 7.2 innings, and Gavin Floyd earned the win for the ChiSox going 6 ip with 3 runs given up.
