Top 10 Reasons to be Pissed

I decided to kick it David Letterman style here at WSBGM's today with a Top 10 Reasons to be Pissed Off About Yesterday's Disgusting Loss...
#10 - Charlie Manuel may have been shorthanded with both Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins unavailable to leadoff, but sticking Geoff Jenkins in the 1-hole neither cute nor intelligent, it was stupid.
#9 - The Pat Burrell Rule (whereas he must be lifted in late innings) came back to haunt the Phils yet again as So Taguchi came up in a pivotal at bat and grounded out on 1 pitch to end the game.
#8 - The Phillies are adverse to bunting successfully, but they try plenty, just to no avail.
#7 - Pedro "Out Machine" Feliz is good at being bad offensively and his defense has been far less glamorous than advertised.
#6 - Geoff Jenkins dropped a very catchable foul ball that allowed Derek Lee to prolong his at bat in the 3rd inning which ended with him doubling and the Cubs scoring runs. Jenkins also had a horrible at bat where he failed to even muster up a sac fly.
#5 - Tom Gordon is mysteriously still the go-to guy as set-up man...why?! He has proven to be hittable and to give up big runs (11.12 era and 2.12 whip). So why bring him in to pitch the 8th with a 1-run lead? To make matters worse, JC Romero, he of 0.00 era, was available.
#4 - Any ball thrown that bounces on its journey towards Ryan Howard's mitt is sure to either in turn bounce off said mitt or by it...make some scoops 10 Million Dollar Man!!!
#3 - The Phillies are once again sub .500, this doesn't sit well with me despite J-Roll's proclamation that the Phils will be fine if they finish April with a .500 record.
#2 - The Phillies committed 2 more errors today, with the killer blow being chalked up to Chase Utley's 4th screw-up of the season in the top of the 10th on what should have been a double play to end the inning.
#1 - Fake homeruns shouldn't count! 3rd base umpire awarded Mark DeRosa with a homerun that was obviously foul. Manuel got booted from the game for arguing. Burrell did his best to convince the ump that it was foul and to ask for help on the call, but in the end the "homerun" stood and ended up being the difference in the ball game.

Happy Birthday to Charlie Hustle- Pete Rose.

Ah yes, Pete Rose. A few weeks ago I read his book My Prison Without Bars (bought for a buck at a dollar store). Every so often in it he seems to be somewhat apologetic and conciliatory, but then it's like, "Hey, I'm Pete f'ing Rose and baseball's investigation into me was a lousy witch-hunt even though I was betting on baseball." That being said, he was a great ballplayer and he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Bud Selig has done more to damage baseball than Pete ever did.

Pete was a scumbag for betting on baseball, especially on his own team, but the all-time hit king truly does deserve to be in the Hall-of-Fame.

What is the Phils record? 6 wins - 4 losses - 2 losses to defense - 1 loss to ump.

Even still, they had other chances in those games to win as well and did not capitalize. It would also help it Bruntlet and company could put a bunt down. Pirates and Phils #1 in errors.

howard's weak attempt to get utley's throw was the thing that pissed me off the most about yesterday. not only was it a lame attempt, it was a huge mental error. with the go-ahead run rounding third base, that ball HAS to be at least blocked. by a glove. by a leg. by his freaking face. whatever it takes. a better play would have been to come off the bag, get down on two knees and block the thing like a catcher. giving up on a potential inning-ending DP is usually not a good choice, but the with the likely game-winning run at third, it would have been the right play.

if the first baseman on my high school team would have done what howard did, he would sat on the bench for a week. even as 17 year old kids, we were expected to know what to do in specific situations and were held accountable. question whether the phils are, at times. did manuel yell at howard as much as he did the 3rd base umpire?

Howard hits homeruns...yippie! The man is clueless on the field, total waste defensively. I agree with Corey in that Howard just doesn't think out there about the situation and that costs the Phils a lot during the course of the season considering at 1st base he sees the most action during any given game.

I was quoted on BeerLeaguer today-
“That game should have never been a loss. From fake homeruns, to runners left on base, to shoddy defense, to poor bunting, to bad managing (JC Romero should have been pitching the 8th, Tom Gordon should have never been in the game)...horrible game.” – GM-Carson

our defense has to improve for us to win more games. the pitching has actually been better than expected.

Did you happen to catch Charlie's press conference after the game yesterday? If it wasn't for the Phillies logos behind him, I would have thought someone changed the channel to a viewing of Sling Blade.

GM-Carson said...

The pitching has been a huge surprise to me, and I'm please with the staff for the most part (Kendrick and Gordon need to pick it up though).

The defense is killing them, something like 13 unearned runs now.

Ryan Howard is sucking in all facets of his game too.

Honestly, we need to stop picking on Charlie Manuel's intelligence and speech. After all, he's done a tremendous job for someone with an extra chromosome.

Jacobin said...

I'm not usually one to bash on Charlie for the way he talks, but yesterday was just particularly terrible.

The one thing I was able to make out of it was his response when asked if Jenkins would bat lead-off again... his reply was that Jenkins isn't a lead-off guy. If so, why was he batting there yesterday?

It seems Werth is probably the best option at the top of the order with both Victorino and Rollins out.

GM-Carson said...

I heard Manuel interviewed prior to the game about batting Jenkins leadoff and he said the same thing "He's not a leadoff hitter". Then why in the hell are you batting him in the 1-hole Charlie. Agreed that Werth is the best option for leadoff in the wake of Rollins and Vic's absence.

On a side note have you seen the sweet start Gavin Floyd has had on the south side on Chi-town. I heard on Baseball Tonight former Muts GM saying how he can lift the White Sox into AL Central contention if he continues the torid start. I'm not sure whether to blame Patty G or congradulate Kenny W.

Bob D said...

Gavin Floyd - late bloomer. The Phils may one day rue the day they traded him, but he wasn't going anywhere on the Phils.

GM-Carson said...

If Gavin Floyd continues to pitch well I'll be very surprised. Gillick did the right thing in trading him, he wouldn't have succeeded in Philly because the fans saw enough of the kid and he was a headcase that way.

GreggyD said...

If Gavin Floyd excels in Chicago, I won't be bitter towards Gillick at all. We all know that he had to go when he did. He may put up results, but I think he will come crashing down by June or so. His inconsistency will catch up with him at some point. Plus, if the Phils would have kept him, he would've gotten shelled with his home park being CBP.

on beerleaguer alot of badmouthing is going on of chase utley. i understand that he hade some errors and he's not the best defensive second baseman, but regardless of that, he is the heart and soul of our team, a future hall of famer, and he plays hard every day. he loves the phillies and we have always returned that love to him, i don't think a few errors should stop that. chase is the best second baseman in baseball, period.

GreggyD said...

His errors have been a nuisance as of late and he really needs to step it up. Howard is bad enough in the field and Feliz has been less than stellar. We are supposed to have the best SS, 2B, 1B combo in baseball and these errors have been horrendous. I expect this from Howard, but Utley has really surprised me.

Despite all of this, Utley is still the player with the most heart on this team and his efforts night in and night out should never be discounted. He gives his all no matter what. I don't know if he is a future HOF'er, but if he keeps up with the way he has gone for most of his career he will be. The errors are quite frustrating though and he needs to step it up. I'm sure he's kicking himself in the ass just as much as we are upset about this.

Give Eaton and Manuel heaps but not Uts.

GM-Carson said...

I'm pissed at Utley for the dumb errors, but I still love me some Chase. Seriously, the man is an awesome ballplayer and easily the best 2nd baseman in MLB.

I was a bit surprised that Manuel kept Eaton on schedule and bumped Kendrick back...is this a message to the kid to get your shit together?

BloodStripes said...

I think also they want Eaton to pitch against NY. A team he has had some success against.

GM-Carson said...

Eaton has had more than enough struggles with the Phillies, but oddly enough he thrives against the Mets...go figure.
