There Will Be Blood

Rival- equal: be equal to in quality or ability; "Nothing can rival cotton for durability"; "Your performance doesn't even touch that of your colleagues". Be the rival of, be in competition with; "we are rivaling for first place in the race". The contestant you hope to defeat; "he had respect for his rivals"; "he wanted to know what the competition was doing".

The New York Mets are the Philadelphia Phillies rival by every definition of the word. The fans hate each other, the teams trash talk about the other, the cities are within 100 miles; perfect formula for a bitter rivalry in which every game is fought with maximum effort, intensity, and passion. Grand Pappy Moyer and the Phightin Phils face Ollie Perez and the Metropolitans today at 1:10 for Shea Stadium's final opening day. Tomorrow night the rivalry will take center stage on ESPN2 with Kyle Kendrick versus Mike Pelfrey, and the 3 game set will wrap up Thursday night with Adam Eaton against John Maine. "There are guys in the [Phillies] locker room the other day suggesting there will be a brawl - b-r-a-w-l," Jayson Stark told Philadelphia radio station WPEN at the time. There will be blood!

I must be in a violent mood lately, 3 posts with blood in the title within the last week.

Pat Burrell's career stats against the Mets: 134 g, 472 ab, 73 r, 119 h, 18 db, 2 trp, 41 hr, 102 rbi, 1 sb, .252 avg, and .921 OPS.

Feliz is really bad. Just throwing that out there.

GM-Carson said...

Feliz today- 1 at bat, 2 outs. Yuck!

GM-Carson said...

There very well might be a brawl after all. In two plate appearances Chase Utley has been plunked both times. Jamie Moyer has hit Ryan Church too (not that Grand Pappy's pitches travel fast enough to inflict injury or pain).

Dan said...

Ugh, the Phillies need to do something to wake up - a brawl isn't the worst idea in the world. Howard is so brutal to watch sometimes.

GM-Carson said...

I love Howard's homeruns and stats at the end of the season, but watching him every game can be agonizing because of his inability to put the ball in play and make plays on defense. I'm not trying to bash him, but he does piss me off a lot. Thankfully he makes me happy too.

That is THREE Unbelievable Catches! by Shane Victorino, the Flyin Hawaiian.

This team will be fine. A major upgrade over Rowand.

Time to Win the Game now.

Jacobin said...

Yes, great defense from Victorino! Too bad he came up small when we needed a hit... umm... kind of doing that throughout the early season.

Where's my favorite Met's killer Burrell today?!? Drive some runs in (3 LOB already).

Random question: does anyone have a Majestic Authentic jersey?

If so, how does the sizing go? I noticed that the sizes go by numbers (e.g., 48, 50, 52).

I have a Majestic Replica to my name, but they go by letters (S, M, L, XL).

I wear an XL Replica jersey...anybody have any idea what this corresponds to in terms of the Authentic numbering system?

Jacobin said...

Erm... I'd guess it's your chest measurement, like if you were getting a sport coat. From looking at the Majestic site, I believe that suspicion is confirmed. So 40 = M, 44 = L, 48 = XL, 52 = 2XL, and 56 = 3XL. Since these are short sleeve items, you don't need to worry about gettin getting a L(ong) or S(hort) like you would with a suit.

I hope that helps. I wear a 40, by the way, and am a big fan of the Utley 26 home jersey.

GM-Carson said...

You a small fry then Jacobin? I'm more along the lines of a 52+...I'm big-boned.

Moyer did well for being Moyer, but the offense is coming up with diddly-squat.

Jacobin said...

A small fry? Actually, I in a suit coat I wear a 40L. I go about 6'2" 185 lb.

But since we're talking about small, let's touch on coming up small... Phils have left 15 on base so far this game.

GM-Carson said...

Utley just got hit again...3 times!!!

Death to Mets...let there be blood!

GM-Carson said...

"Thank you Carlos Delgado", Harry Kalas. *After what should have been an inning ending double play with the bases loaded hit by Ryan Howard, but he throws it into Utley's back and 2 runs score and no outs recorded.

GM-Carson said...

I'm 6'3" but haven't seen 185 since the 5th grade.

Jacobin said...

Utley hit by pitch and then hit by a throw to second. Nice to see the Met's doing a mini-meltdown, choke-job in this game. Takes me back to last September.

GM-Carson said...

I'm still waiting for sometimes poster Scotty to drop a comment, he's my friend, but a Mets fan...very difficult for the 2 to go hand-in-hand.

GM-Carson said...

Phils win 5-2, but could lost J-Roll. Jimmy has a sprained ankle. Hopefully no DL, but even if he isn't injured enough to be disabled, a bum ankle is bad for a speedster like Rollins.

Jacobin said...

Very nice to ruin the final home opener at that dump Shea Stadium.

Hopefully Rollins will be okay, Victorino would be the logical choice to slot at lead off if Jimmy can't go for a few days... but the Flying Hawaiian hasn't been swinging the bat so well or getting on base lately.

Los said...

Great game today ... with the exception of Rollins getting hurt.

GM-Carson said...

If Jimmy is really hurt, meaning DL hut, I guess we call up Chris Woodward or Gookie Dawkins and slot Bruntlett into SS. That's the worst case scario, but could become reality.

1. Victorino CF
2. Utley 2B
3. Burrell LF
4. Howard 1B
5. Jenkins/Werth RF
6. Feliz 3B
7. Ruiz/Coste C
8. Bruntlett SS

Gosh I hope that doesn't happen.

Mike Santa Barbara said...

You were right....I was thinking the same thing writing about Adam Eaton....I'm thinking..dammit he's going to throw atleast 7 good inings..I know it.....

What was him checking out his finger nail after EVERY out all about though??

And let's hope we see a brawl....put this rivalry on the map for real real...

Mike Santa Barbara said...

I heard Rollins isn't hurt badly he should play next game. What about Ray Olmedo or did we release that guy?

Bob D said...

Olmedo was released. Steve Jeltz should be available. (2days in arow with a Jeltz comment)

New lineup:

Jacobin said...

Counting Delgado's pathetic throw to second, Chase Utley was hit four times today by balls thrown by Mets. That's total crap. Someone needs to send a message (namely a fastball in an ear flap).

Doc's Sports Predictions Guy said...

Right now New York's biggest rival is led by Jorge Sosa. Their bullpen sucks nearly as much as the Phillies' and Braves'!

GM-Carson said...

I revel in the Mets suckage.
