Sweet Sunday Sweep

After taking games one and two from the Pirates the past two days, the Phils are on the cusp on their first 3-game sweep on the season. Brett "The Hitman" Myers opposes lefty Paul Maholm. A sweep would be sweet because it would likely place them atop the NL East with a 15-11 record (assuming Florida finally loses) and make this month of April a winning one. Before the season started, and even in its opening month, I have undercut this team's value by predicting only 82 wins and finding things to whine and complain about (can't help it, it's my nature). Even with a winning April there is still much to bitch about, but for today I'll harp on the positives rather than the negatives.

*The offense is ranked 6th in MLB with 123 runs scored and 1st with 40 homeruns. That is outstanding considering they've played without Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, and essentially Ryan Howard for a large portion of the season. Pat Burrell, Chase Utley, and Jayson Werth deserve a round of applause for their efforts.

*Despite slander heaped upon the pitching staff they've risen above the condemnation to sport a 3.70 era, which is good enough for 5th in MLB. The bullpen is guiding the way with the 2nd best era in MLB as a group, headed by JC Romero, Brad Lidge, Rudy Seanez, and the rebirth of Tom Gordon (still holding out of calling him "Flash").

*Happy Birthday to Pedro Feliz who turns Too-old-to-hit. Funny, I don't remember learning that digit in our number system.

*3 in a row, at least make it 4...keep on streakin'!

Looking over the boxscores this morning (like every morning) and I am just utterly amazed by Micah Owings of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Not only is he a decent starting pitcher, the dude can flatout hit. Career line over: 78 ab, 13 r, 27 h, 8 dbl, 1 trpl, 4 hr, 16 rbi, .346 avg, and a .994 OPS...wow!

More boxscore magic:
nearly every regular in the Cubs lineup is batting .300+. A-Ram and DeRosa are the slackers with .293 and .284.

we have the sweep in the bag. myers is pissed about his last game and is going to shut down the buccos for a complete game, hopefully. none of our pitchers have a complete game yet...

82 wins? I think this is a 90 plus win team especially after the April they have had. If Kendrick and Howard get it together, Rollins and Shane come back healthy, and the pitching holds up, this could be the best Phillies team in a generation!

I am very pleased with the road swing this week, one ill-advised pitching decision by Cholly and staff is the only thing that may have keep this from being a perfect week thus far. Please let me add Coste and Dobbs to the props list. Myers is due for a strong outing so I am looking for the sweep and hoping the Phils are in first at the end of the day. If not, a 5-2
road swing and finally taking a series in Pittsburgh will be more than sufficient.

Now that Vic is coming back, I would like to see Werth in the lineup as an everyday player and for Werth to bat #2 once J-Roll comes back to the lineup. Vic is an on-off hacker who can contribute more with his defense and whose speed can help facilitate runs in the bottom of the order. I know that Cholly is still kinda stuck in the 60's/early 70's type baseball he came up in where you
automatically put your fastest guys at the top of the order, but Werth can run, takes better ABs and has can get on via BB. But..that aint going to happen, and the Phils will be bring the runs in any case. Lets just hope the pitching holds as well as it has.

Also, C & C, any plans on a WSBGMs
Day at CBP yet?

I for one, would like to put Vic back in right and keep Werth in center, solely for the reason that Vic is just not durable enough to play CF.

Is Pedro Feliz actually this bad? I mean, holy cow. He's just terrible. I'm longing for the days of David Bell here...at least he could hit left-handers.

In other news, nice hit by Bruntlett - I'm happy that his initial struggles didn't cause him to seriously melt down or anything.

What the hell Brett Myers? Totally crappy performance by him today. Rest of the team is pretty bad too. Can't this team ever sweep anyone?

Corey and I were just talking about a WSBGM's day at the Cit today...don't worry it'll be coming.

Myers looked out of shape today ... It's the 7th inning now, it doesn't look good.

2 hits through 8 innings. it's funny how this team can be a joke sometimes.

Why is Madson so shaky sometimes? Because he sucks. Ok, that might be a bit harsh, but I for one am not a fan of Madson, he's let me down far too many times.

Myers just isn't getting the job done this season and that's a shame.

By the, I'm seriously contemplating never praising this team again, every time I do that bastards lay a dud and disappoint me.
