Phils Trade For Hatcher

The Phils have traded hitting coach Milt Thompson to the Angels for the Halos' hitting coach, Mickey Hatcher. Hatcher will assume that role in Philly, as well as being named "Special Assistant to the Defensive Coordinating Coach."

Said GM Pat Gillick of the addition, "We've tried all conventional methods to get Ryan to field the ball. Our next step: the oversized glove. We all loved Milt, but Hatcher's years of experience with the giant clown-sized glove will be invaluable in the progression of Ryan as a first baseman."

Wait, you mean to tell me the ability to field a ball is important? All this time I though Howard was around soley for homeruns, botched plays, and tons of k's.

thank god they made that move...

I have mixed feelings about this move. It's true that no MLB coach has more experience with the giant clown-sized glove than Hatcher. But Hatcher has a guaranteed contract through '10, and the Phils will be paying big bucks for his decline years.

Looks like Gillick has stuck Amaro with another bad contract...

Hatcher had some good years though...20 years ago!

Top of the 1st inning and Grand Pappy already getting battered around. Taguchi dropped a very catchable ball and 2 runs score. Then Taguchi swings at the 1st pitch of the bottom of the 1st inning and makes an out. The Mets are dominating us!

I like Ollie. He gets wild, but overall he's good. He had some bad years with the Pirates, but other than that he's been decent (4 out of 7 seasons he's been good). I'd rather have him than the extremely hittable Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick, or Adam Eaton.

yea i agree with you on perez. im just a hater cause he's on the mets :P

'nuff said Long Drive, I understand.

I hate Reyes and Wright (Moses and Jesus as my wife calls them) for the same reason.

haha yea i can't stand reyes but i always give it up to wright for being a stand up guy. but he's 6 for 6 this series now and i want to strangle him with chicken wire...

Phils are only 3 for 22 with the bases load...that's shitty!

Werth up now with bases loaded, does it get worse?

From MLBTR:
2008 Draft: Philadelphia Phillies
We'll be looking at the 2008 draft over the next few months here at MLBTR. Mike Arbuckle, the Phillies assistant GM, took some questions from fans regarding the draft and the team's farm system. Here are the highlights:

When asked what positions the Phils are seeking, Arbuckle gave the right answer. "You have to be very careful about trying to draft toward a particular position, simply because of the time it takes to develop players to get to the big leagues...So you try to draft the best available player in each round, the guy that we would view as having the highest ceiling."
On the slotting system: "I think generally we have been a club and are a club that tries to do what's best for the industry." The Phillies have generally stayed within the vicinity of slot.
On college players vs. high school players: "In comparing high school to college players, generally the college player is nearer to being the finished product. So you can't project as much on a college player as you would a high school player."
On the Phillies farm system: "I think the strength is double-A down, so I think our better prospects are younger kids."
Arbuckle was noncommittal when asked about what the team plans to do with Pat Burrell when the season is over. He also gives some takes on specific players in the Phillies system.

Another loss, and to the Mets makes it that much worse. They own us right now. Last season is a distant memory, we're in '08 now and sucking big time.
