Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader

This is a battle as old as time itself, good versus evil, Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vader, Cole Hamels versus Johan Santana, Phillies versus Mets...let the battle for supremacy commence!

Rock 'em Sock 'em:
*Yesterday was the first truly warm day of the season and by coincidence or possibly metaphysics the bats warmed up too. Warm Weather = Warm Bats then Hot Weather = Hot Bats? Phils offense cranked out 10 in 70+ degrees yesterday, imagine what they could do in the 90's.

*Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and Chris Coste all went deep in the 10-2 victory over the Astros. Burrell gets the vote for early season MVP with monster stats of .373 avg, 11 r, 6 hr, 17 rbi, and a 1.296 OPS. Chris Coast-to-Coste is making a strong case for more playing time with a 4 hit 3 rbi game yesterday; couple that with the fact that Chooch Ruiz is struggling, and voila you've got yourself in the lineup more often.

*Brett Myers went 7 strong innings, giving up only 1 run while punching out 8 (not literally, that wouldn't be good for his image). Brett had a rough 2 starts to begin the season but has settled down nicely over his last 2 outings.

*Incoming New York Metropolitans means incoming Mets fans, which means fights in the stands between fans and possible fights on the field between teams (in both cases, it's amusing). Of note- Mets played a grueling 14 inning 4 hour and 45 minute affair last night that hopefully works in our favor tonight.

that game yesterday definitely means their bullpen is shot, as if it wasn't complete shit to begin with. this means santana will be throwing more strikes and being aggressive to keep a low pitch count and go deeper into the game. which also means the phils will have plenty of first pitch strikes to put in the stands. this game is so huge from a rivalry stand point considering the guy throwing against us is the reason everyone is picking the mets this year. so let's rock the shit out of him and send him with his head held low into the dugout in the 3rd inning and give the sports writers the proverbial middle finger.

Amen to that Long Drive!

I am so amped up about tonight's matchup that I have no idea how I'll concentrate an entire day through work...at least it's Friday.

Being excited about a game this much is an awesome feeling. That is something to be said about the 2000's Phils. In the 90's aside from '93 it was very ho-hum, but now in the new century we've got reasons to get hype.

Choice words Long Drive.

The Phils are always up for a mutts game. This one should be a cracker. If only Rollins were ready.

Now remember my preseason prediction on how Burrell will OWN Santana... its gonna start tonight and I can't wait... You're my boy Burrell!

GM-Carson said...

I'd love to see Burrell knock the crap out of Johan tonight, and the rest of the Phils lineup for that matter.

I say its time Scotty takes his skirt off and backs up his Mets banter which has been going on for the entire off-season. Cy Hamels will solidify his #1 NL East pitcher status tonight.

The long awaited appearance of Jimmy O'D...give Scotty hell today for me bro.

My friend got tickets to this game off of Stubhub earlier in the week as soon as he found out this would be the pitching matchup and the bastard didn't even think to invite me. Some friend...

Burrell will bring the magic that he usually has in Shea to CBP tonight and rock Santana to shut up all of the national media. Was I bitter when the Mutts signed him? Yes. But his stats have not been all that impressive lately, and this year has not been anything close to what those damn NY fans expected out of him. It's time to bring our NL best offense to the plate and rock him for a second straight game with double digits in the R column after 9 innings.

I heard an interesting discussion by Mitch Williams on the Ryan Howard v. Darth Vader matchup. Apparently he will not be able to throw that nasty change against a power hitting lefty, because a lefty-lefty change-up is really only effective on the outside of the plate and that's not a comfortable pitch to throw for most pitchers. Ergo, Ryan will see fastballs and breaking balls. And Mitch claimed that Johann's breaking ball is suspect.

I'm looking forward to a dominant outing from Hamels tonight. The Mets need to leave Philly looking up at the Phils in the standings.

Considering modern sports nicknames seem to be all about combining shortened first and last names (A-Rod, J-Roll, etc.), I propose that Johan Santanna be given the apt and appropriate nickname of Joanna.

Great match-up. This is what MLB needs to get juices flowing in April. Even casual fans are paying attention to this one.

I'll be watching but mentally prepared for one of the aces to come up short. These ace vs. ace match-ups frequently end up one sided. Of course Ole King Cole will prevail.

Hamels has been amazing this season. Anytime you have a sub 1 era you're doing something amazing.

Is this game on ESPN? If not, that's a shame and marketing mistake.

Its even hotter today. Lets see those Phils bats even hotter.

Jacobin great nickname there Jo-anna.

Hamels vs. Santana is getting some hype on ESPN.com "Stage Left".

I see Jimmy O'D has taken the liberty to join the blog and starts his blogging career by immediately bashing the guy who steered him to it....lotta class James.

I must say I'm looking forward to the game tonight, arguably the two best left handed pitchers in the game on the same field. It doesnt get any better than that for baseball fans. I hope the starters can go deep because neither team has a solid bullpen and I dont want to see another ugly game between these two.

I will take the high road with Jimmy O'D for now, just for an update Jimbo I'm currently in the lead in our little side bet 2-1. I can almost feel your money in my wallet.

Disclaimer- Scotty indeed is a hardcore Mets fan, but he's a good guy and doesn't act like a stererotypical prick like most Mets fans we've come to hate. With that said- death to your team!!!

i actually laughed out loud at work when i read the joanna nick name thing. i think the game tomorrow is on espn. they are missing out on today...

This reminds me, you guys never did an "Episode IV" post from way back in the winter. Remember those? You only did five...

Corey said...

like the original, i am also going to wait twenty years before i finish the sixth episode...

seriously, i ran out of ideas. feel free to email ideas to us though, as i would be glad to pass them onto this blog as my own, guilt free...

GM-Carson said...

I'm trying to think of another epic series that would be cool for the Phils. Harry Potter? Lord of the Rings? James Bond? Austin Powers?

Corey said...

okay, i'm going to put a stop to this before it goes too far. harry potter. lord of the rings. cool? i don't think so. one is a stupid limey kids book and the other revolves around a group of homosexual midgets chasing jewelry (which is also a description of the NY Mets 2008 season.) neither of those should be paired with the phils. at least go with something cool, like sesame street characters...

David Bell said...

hey, i like lord of the rings...

GM-Carson said...

Frodo Baggins was not gay!

If he was, I'll have to rearrange my entire stereotype of homosexual midgets...

GM-Carson said...

Through 1 inning and Chooch gave the Mets a run on a passed ball and Johan is getting strikes that cross the white part of the batters box. Long night?

GM-Carson said...

Johan dominating, Cole not so much. Hamels gave up way too many hits tonight, and the Phils bats haven't made very good contact with Santana.

Manuel intentionally walked Beltran to load the bases with no outs. I bitch about this every time that moron does it because it NEVER works. Needless to say, Beltran scored.

GM-Carson said...

Phils almost came back, but Chooch past ball, Manuel's decision to give the free pass to Beltran, and yet another error by Ryan Howard cost the Phils the game. Losers 6-4 to the Mets.

Jacobin said...

Blah, that sucked. Didn't need to see Joanna get a win in the first game he pitched for the queens of Queens against the Phils.

GM-Carson said...

For the most part it was a well pitched game between the two aces. Sad thing is, the Phils could have easily won that game with fundamental baseball and a compotent manager.
