Arbitration...Oh No!

Today (February 20th) is the day that Ryan Howard and the Philadelphia Phillies meet for an arbitration hearing to decide Howard's 2008 salary. RyHo wants $10 million while the Phils are countering with $7 million. Not that Howard isn't worth $10+ million in today's world of Major League Baseball, but I'm guessing based on the current salary structures and past values of contracts of players with similar experiences as Howard that the board will rule in favor of the Phils. What do you think?

Who will win the arbitration hearing?
Phillies- $7 million
Howard- $10 million

*Hopefully this offseason (08-09) the Phils will approach Howard about a 3-4 year contract buying out the rest of his arbitration years and possibly 1 year of free agency, that way this drama can be averted for the next few seasons.

I see Howard getting the $7mil this year or a last minute deal for $8.5mil. Then I see the team watching him til about midseason and start talking about long term for 5years at the going rate with an Utley-like discount.

All of these people who think Howard will get upset over the hearing or possibily losing I feel are wrong. Howard seems to be much more mature than to let that bother him. He has a track record of not letting these issues bother him like other whinny players we have seen.

He's gonna get $7M. But I foresee him having a torrid start and the Phils extend him.

From all reports I've read and heard, Howard is looking for an A-Rod type payday, not an Utley or Pujols type one...in other words- too f'n expensive!

From MLBTR-
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have signed Byung-Hyun Kim. Kovacevic believes it's a Major League deal, and the Pirates will consider Kim a reliever. The Giants had been interested, but Kim didn't want a minor league deal with them.

*The Pirates are stupid!

Didn't the Pirates GM write an open letter to Bucs fans telling them that they wouldn't "overspend on marginal free agents?" Two days ago?

The Pirates are probably the worst organization in MLB right now. Their farm system is mostly barren, their fans are dwindling, their currect 25 man roster barely competes with some Triple A teams...they're in a sad, sad state.

SI.com is reporting that the Mets are interested in signing Freddy Garcia.
I think that would be a very good move for them.

Howard won't take any contract past 4 years at this point. He's gonna try to cash in along the lines of A-Rod ... which means he'll probably be a New York Yankee by 2012.

Either way the big fella will end up filthy rich.

I love Ryan Howard and I'm damn glad he's a Phillie, but if he's searching for A-Rod type money that's just ridiculous in my opinion. A-Rod getting A-Rod money is ridiculous in my opinion for that matter.
