Philly Phlashback Phriday: Dave Philley

Today I'm kickin' it old school, so old school that the Athletics were still in town. With a name like David Earl Philley, you know the man had to call the City of Brotherly Love home for part of his career. In fact, Philly was his stomping grounds for 2 periods during his 18 seasons in the bigs. He first sprung into action with the Philadelphia A's back in 1951 and roamed the outfield at Shibe Park for them until 1953. Then again in 1958 Philley broke out with an extreme case of Philadelphia Phever and came back to the city to play for the Phils in Connie Mack Stadium until 1960, totaling 6 seasons in Philly during his MLB employment. He was never really a star player, but he did collect 1700 hits with a .270 batting average. He also made stops at Chicago, Cleveland, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, and San Francisco. Being a stud player is never important to WSBGM's when doing a phlashback, we just care that they made an impression, and Philley in Philly certainly did.

Assface Carlos Delgado is claiming- "It was very disappointing because we know that we had the best team. And I believe that we still have a great team".

*Funny think Carlos- the PHILS WON!!!

who couldn't see that coming, it's like Lou Gehrig getting Lou Gehrig's disease

I got this idea from Jayson Stark who mentioned Dave Philley in his Rumblings and Grumbling about a month ago when the Astros took a reliever with the last name Houston.

Do you feel lighter GM Carson without Roberson and He Who Shall Remain Nameless?

When Helms is traded and Eaton qualifies for the insurance on his contract, you will be all set yes?

GM-Carson said...

I'd love to have a purge of Helms and Eaton as well...then all would be well.

I want 3rd baseman Eric Chavez of the Oakland A's.

He is coming off injury, hit 15 HRs in 341 Abs, is owed 11 mil a year for 08, 09, 10, with a 12.5 mil option for 11.

He would hit left handed behind Ryan Howard, putting Ruiz C batting 7th where all catchers should bat, and then a bit of speed with Jenkins/Werth in the 8th slot.

Yum.

The A's are retooling, and he is at his lowest value in prospects, in years.

Play off grit too.

GM-Carson said...

I'd take Eric Chavez and his good defense and plausible bat, but only if the A's ate a bit of that huge salary.

Also, batting Werth/Jenkins 8th doesn't make sense to me. Mayber Werth, but not Jenkins.

More talk about the Mets! Which begs the question, which group is gayer: George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley or Jose Reyes and David Wright?

GM-Carson said...

Andrew Ridgeley of Wham! is married to one of the hotties from Bananarama I do believe.

"Andrew Ridgeley of Wham! is married to one of the hotties from Bananarama I do believe."

dude, you would know that..

Jacobin said...

Damn, Carson got the Wham reference immediately and offhand knew the marital status of the less famous member of that group...

BloodStripes said...

Knowing that information is very worrying Carson. Just knowing who Andrew Ridgeley is, is a worry. C'mon mate! Ramones, Minor Threat, Black Flag. Come back to the good side.

As for Dave Philley. A career of 1700 hits and a .270 batting average is a very good achievement.

Goddess on the mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name

She's got it
Yeah, baby, she's got it
I'm your Venus, I'm your fire
At your desire
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire
At your desire

Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man a man
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no-one else had
Wa!

She's got it
Yeah, baby, she's got it
I'm your Venus, I'm your fire
At your desire
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire
At your desire

Goddess on the mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name

She's got it
Yeah, baby, she's got it
I'm your Venus, I'm your fire
At your desire
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire
At your desire!

With Matt Smith. Gillick knows this is the easiest time to pass people through waivers because everyone's 40 man roster is full. He waited for the right moment.

I smell a big trade on the horizon.

SirAlden said...

"Pitchers Joe Bisenius and J.A. Happ and catcher Jason Jaramillo will take part in this year’s Rookie Career Development Program, Jan. 10-13."

The Phillies nominate players. Read between the lines. Read between the lines.

They think all 3 are going to spend time with the big club, Bisenius and Happ were both injured last year. This is good news.

Venus was a decent song by Bananrama, but I was always partial to Cruel Summer.

I don't smell any big trade coming...I smell the fart I just laid.

Matt Smith may never make it back to the majors, no big loss if he's lost.

Hamels wins Iowa caucuses

DES MOINES, IA — In the sort of moment that epitomizes the wackiness of this Presidential campaign season, Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels has won the Iowa primary, running as an independent candidate on the “Southpaws for Change” platform.

“I didn’t really even campaign in Iowa,” said Hamels. “So this victory is nice, albeit unexpected. When you combine the fact that I’ve got no formal political experience and I’m constitutionally prevented from being president for another 12 years, this is a really nice treat.”

Iowa voters lauded Hamels’ consistency and gumption, particularly in the face of other inexperienced candidates like Barack Obama.

“I don’t care that he has no foreign policy experience,” said John Martin, 64, of Des Moines. “Cole Hamels will tear your heart out and eat it for lunch; even if he’s not hungry. And that’s what we need in the White House.”

Hamels’ viewpoints on the issues were a little disjointed when compared with the other candidates, but many voters indicated that’s what drew them to the lanky lefty.

“I don’t really care about illegal immigration, ethanol subsidies, or the war in Iraq,” said Martha Dinton, 49, of Ames. “Those issues are what everyone talks about, and they’re just not really my concern. What I do care about is absolutely bitching the batters of the National League East with a devastating changeup. So for me, Hamels was the natural choice.”

Hot summer streets
And the pavements are burning
I sit around
Trying to smile
But the air is so heavy and dry
Strange voices are saying
What did they say
Things I can't understand
It's too close for comfort
This heat has got right out of hand

(chorus x 2)
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Now you've gone

The city is crowded
My friends are away
And I'm on my own
It's too hot to handle
So I got to get up and go

(chorus)
You're not the only one
(chorus)

(chorus)
You're not the only one
(chorus)
