I Prefer Cheese Steak

When I think of Philly, I think of cheese steaks...not meatloaf. It's cool to have celebrity fans of our squad, but Meatloaf hasn't been cool since the Rocky Horror Picture Show days...I'd much rather have the ever-popular Will Smith bringing in some extra Phillies PhanPhare. Besides that, meatloaf is a very sketchy meal and is probably best washed down with a tall mug of Schlitz.

Now it's midnight and I'm completely boofy blitzed.
A six of Schlitz and the brew Manischewitz.
With my beer-tinted glasses I'm ready to bitty battle.
I'm hungry like the wolf but I'll end up tending cattle.
Cause you're pretty when I'm drunk.

Here is what else is making news this Christman day: The Phillies continue to try and solidify their bullpen and have contacted Aki Otsuka.

Otsuka, 35, saw Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., Wednesday for a third opinion on the forearm soreness that has idled him since July 1. According to Levine, Dr. Andrews essentially concurred with previous findings by team orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister and California-based Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Both said there is no significant structural issue with Otsuka's elbow, but pain has persisted.

"There is some wear and tear that is consistent with a pitcher of his age," Levine said. "There is no structural issue that should prevent him from pitching through this. It's a matter of pain threshold and what he feels comfortable with.

"There are two components to a player coming back from injury. One is the doctor's assessment. The other is the player. We need to listen to Aki and what he is saying. He'll let us know when he's ready to pitch. We hope this gives him some peace of mind. We're still hopeful that with five weeks left in the season, he'll get back on a mound."

Before leaving to see Dr. Andrews, Otsuka said he thought he needed more rest but wanted this consultation before making any decisions.

Levine said that if Otsuka has surgery, it was not expected to be a major procedure along the lines of a Tommy John operation. A minor cleanup of the elbow joint would probably allow Otsuka to be ready for the 2008 season. Otsuka is eligible for salary arbitration this winter and will likely go to $4 million to $5 million if the Rangers tender him a contract. Nevertheless, he may still get his elbow scoped and cleaned out a bit. If he does not pitch again this season, the club will have a tough decision.
