Phillies Phlashback Phriday: Rocky Childress

Did you know there was another Rocky in Philly besides the Italian Stallion? Rocky Balboa liked to get his brains beat in luring his opponent into a false sense of victory. Just when it looked to be "lights out" for the human punching bag, he'd come back swinging with uppercuts and jabs doing so while practically blind because of his bloody and bruised eyes. Sorry to report, but the other Rocky- Rocky Childress- wasn't nearly the fighter that Stallone portrayed. In fact, Rocky Childress only stuck around the Majors for parts of 4 seasons, his first 2 coming in a Phils uniform. From '85-'86 Childress pitched in 18 games logging 36 innings for Philadelphia before moving on to Houston for 2 more seasons then found himself without work. Such a shame too, with a name like Rocky that kid could have really made some money in advertising had he not sucked. For his career he appeared in 61 games while throwing 107 2/3 innings with a 4.76 era...nothing truly worth remembering him by other than he went by the nickname "Rocky" rather than his true first name of Rodney.

Possible Phuture Phoccs- Rob Mackowiak did not have his option picked up by the Padres. We need a utility infielder...the drama ensues.

He's never played SS though.

I shuffle through the archives for some of these losers...oops, I mean players. Rick Schu will be a future Phlashback. Next week will probably be Dave Hollins though.

That's awesome that you met LaRussa. He always seemed like a guy that would be fun to talk with. He's very passionate about what he does and I love his dedication to the game of baseball. Of course he wore the shades, I wouldn't expect anything less.

He wore the shades because his drunk ass was still hung over!

Rocky Childress- nice choice! He had a good 1st season in Houston, before he faded into oblivion. Horrible as a Phillie, though.

I like to vote for Joe Boever and Brad Moore for Phuture Phlashback Phridays- if you haven't covered them already.

Mike- believe it or not, Joe Boever was the 1st ever Phlashback, and we also did Brad Moore too before (we even sponsor his baseballreference.com page).

Here's a collection of some of the Phlashbacks over the past year or so- http://pabaseball.blogspot.com/2007/08/phillies-phlashback-phriday-reunion.html

Gidday GM's. I've been in baseball blog exile for a while but I'm back. For a while at least anyway. Just had a good long read on all I have missed and must say it was a quality read. Well done. The interview with Beerleaguer's JW was excellent. The last sentence was classic WSBGM's stuff. Good work boys!

We will be getting two draft picks for Rowand. Would get a sandwich pick for Garcia as a type B if we offered him arbitration.

Doubtful if we will, the Phillies would worry he would accept. Hope we do and someone else signs him, the signing team does not lose a pick. MLB awards a sandwich pick.

Best case if we do not sign any free agents, and offer arbitration to Rowand and Garcia we will have 7 draft picks in the first 3 rounds. 1, 2, 3, 3 for not signing Workman, Rowand first pick, Roward second pick, Garcia 1a pick.

Rowand could be a 1 and and 1a, down to a 1a and a 3 worst case, like Delucchi last year.

This is a good year to sign free-agents and lose draft picks. We have 6 picks if we do not offer Garcia arbitration.

Offering Freddy Garcia arbitration only makes sense if he signs with a club before the deadline to tender, because he's not going to get 10 million on the open market, but he would get that through arbitration, so he'd probably accept the deal.

Welcome back BloodStripes- about damn time!
