Ho-Ho-Ho

Last week, Corey jokingly proposed signing 1st round pick gone bad Kris Benson. Benson has battled injuries lately, has never lived up to the hype of being a 1st round draft choice, and has the media attention stolen from him by his bodacious bodied wife Anna. I know I may be in the minority, but I'd like a cheap fallback plan that doesn't include JA Happ or Zach Segovia if/when someone gets hurt from the rotation or sucks immensely (i.e. Adam Eaton). Therefore, I too endorse the signing of Kris Benson to a low guaranteed sum with incentives for reaching innings pitched. I say throw $2 million on the table with perks for reaching 100 innings and then every 25 innings thereafter. Reliable ESPN baseball analyst Buster Olney had this to say about the potential bargain that is Kris Benson- He's probably never going to be a star, and any team that signs him will have to endure a few days of Anna Benson publicity. But before he had surgery last spring, Benson had been a fairly steady No. 4 and No. 5 type of starter. In eight seasons, he had one year with an ERA better than 4.00, and no year in which he had an ERA worse than 4.97. A Cy Young candidate? Probably not. Someone who will save you from relying on too many kids from Double-A? Absolutely, when healthy. *Since the Phils reportedly only have $10 million left to spend this offseason, I am in favor of picking up Benson because we are not at a loss should he not materialize into a useful commodity, but if he does lock down the 5th spot in the rotation and perform to career norms then we have ourselves a steal.

P.S. The title "Ho-Ho-Ho" is in reference to Benson being a possible early Christmas present for the Phils, in now way is it directed at his wife pictured there on Santa's lap (*wink*wink*).

Happy 27th bro...Corey and I got you beat by a year. That really only means one step closer to death and one extra year of torture from the Phils.

I think Anna's hot, my opinion. The boobs lure me.

Benson won't get Eaton money or Eaton years, that's why I'm in favor of signing him.

From Olney's ESPN.com blog today- Have heard that the Phillies are making a big play for Mike Lowell, who would fit their ballpark perfectly. The Phillies hope to improve their pitching, but with a bad market and a thin farm system to trade from, the Phillies don't have a lot of ways to make their pitching staff better -- and so, if they add Lowell, their offense should be better.

Yea I read that Lowell wants 4 years and that the Sox won't go more then 3. Come on Phils... you can do it!

Wow- 4 years for Lowell and easily 10+ mil per season is dicey because of his age and history.

According to a club source, Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail likely will begin conversations with Mark Pieper, Erik Bedard's agent, about a contract extension for the pitcher before the winter meetings, which begin Dec. 3 in Nashville, Tenn. To this point, the Orioles have gauged league interest in Bedard, 28, who went 13-5 this season with a 3.16 ERA and set a franchise season record with 221 strikeouts despite missing the last month of the season with an oblique injury.

I would even want him more than Santana, and he will be cheaper, two years of eligibility left.

Apparently the Phils have offered Mike Lowell a 4 year contract in the neighborhood of $50 million. I say that's wonderful for 2 seasons, but then I really start to worry about a man making 13-14 mil playing third getting into his late 30's near the end of his contract. This is a help now probably hurt later deal. It'll be interesting to see if Lowell takes it.

I'm rooting for Scott Rolen to return. He is good for 25-30 Hrs, 280 BA 100+ RBI and 90+ runs scored, Oh wait - that was 5 years ago sorry my bad. Apparently Rolen may be recieving some interest from the Phils. Most likely it is just speculation though.

If the Phils have offered Lowell 13 mil a year, then I expect the team is preparing to expand the payroll to 120 mil or so, instead of the 100 mil everyone expects. A trade of a high salary person may be in the works as well. Likely Burrell but I would hope for Eaton to be traded.(yeah wishful thinking)

Lowell should have 3-4 good years left. You all make me feel like I'm on my death bed when you say he is old being in his upper 30's. I'm in my upper 30's and I don't feel old. I say bring back Nolan Ryan, what is he 50, 60?

I fear the whole Lowell thing too, but if he plays as well as he did for Boston, our infield will be the best in baseball. We might even be able to win a few games with Eaton pitching ...

Lowell's great, but $10 million is too much per year for him, he's been a journeyman for his whole career.

Oh yes, his signed ball on HSN was only $199 each and Curt Schillings was $399, so that shows you he doesn't command a $50 million dollar contract from the Phillies.

Make it an incentive laden contract 4 years $35 million and give him bonuses for certain incentives after that.

Benson, no way. His gal could get a spot in the publicity dept. for the Phillies maybe, going around in that outfit and selling season tickets perhaps!

Bod D- sorry to make you feel old, but when players reach about 35 years of age a swift decline is likely. This isn't always the case, but still likely nonetheless.

Also of note- Hamels got 2 3rd place votes for the NL Cy Young. Now if he could just stay off the disabled list for an entire season.

Check this ridiculous rumor out- any truth to the rumor about Tejada and Bedard for Carrasco, Madson, Kendrick and Helms with the Phils picking up most of Helms Salary?

*Tejada would be instant upgrade at 3rd, and Bedard would fill out the top of the rotation with Hamels and Myers and we're talking World Series...which means this will NEVER happen.

SirAlden said...

The O's have always liked Madson,
Tejada is a Abreu type Salary Dump.
Gillick has been trying to get Bedard since he arrived, first tried to send Abreu, then Burrell.

They know that Bedard's highest value is right now. So getting three arms for him Carrasco, Kendrick, and Madson, is significant.

Go look at Bedard's stats on ESPN, you will piss yourself, and he lost a month like Hamels did last year.

Fasten your Seat Belts!

Bedard and Hamels would dominate together, then mix in Myers and all of a sudden Eaton can be stomached.
