Wonderful. Just Wonderful!
I pity the poor kids, they have a long life of disappointment ahead of them. Of course Corey and I turned out alright...well, relatively speaking.
The kid on the right I swear I saw him yelling when Wes Helms came in to pinch hit and struck out for Jamie Moyer late in the season.
I'd like the Phils to take a chance of a player coming off of injury. We have Eaton as a fallback should this pitcher not be ready or do what is needed. Pitchers like Mark Prior, Bartolo Colon, Randy Wolf, Matt Clement, and Kris Benson fall into the category of low risk/high reward. We know Wold can handle Philly and would be a great 5th starter. Colon and Prior have tremendous upside in my opinion. Benson has never lived up to 1st Round Pick status, but his lifetime #'s aren't bad...worth a try in my opinion. Don't rely on these guys, but give 'em a chance...of course this is assuming other teams won't lay out guaranteed fat checks for them.*My poor kid may grow up resenting me because I pushed the Phillies upon him.
I agree with Prior having a great potential upside, but I disagree with Colon. That guy has been injured pretty often, is going to be 36 soon (if that's his real age), and has never been a particularly impressive specimen of physical fitness. On another note, I just read one of the gang of Phillies owners sold his cigar business to the Marlboro people for nearly $3 billion... think that prick could pony up enough for Rowand, someone to play 3B, and a starter?
Adorable, but sad -- for these little ones will never know the joy of a championship.
Chris- Phils will be World Series Champs in '08...if I were Corey and I were co-GM's that is.Buster Olney had this to say about Kris Benson- He's probably never going to be a star, and any team that signs him will have to endure a few days of Anna Benson publicity. But before he had surgery last spring, Benson had been a fairly steady No. 4 and No. 5 type of starter. In eight seasons, he had one year with an ERA better than 4.00, and no year in which he had an ERA worse than 4.97. A Cy Young candidate? Probably not. Someone who will save you from relying on too many kids from Double-A? Absolutely, when healthy.
Uncle R-Tard, Charlie Manuel, finished 2nd to Arizona's Bob Melvin in the NL Manager of the Year Award...thank goodness he didn't win!Ruben Amaro Jr. said the Phils are interested in Japanese imports Kuroda and Kobayshi, as well as starters Wolf and Colon.
Good News for the Phillies...Noone wants to pay A-Rod, so he is crawling back to the Yankees sans Boras.http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/15/sports/baseball/15yanks.html?hp
300 million, he will never see it. And I hpoe he gets the Yanks original offer. The Japanese pitchers are a low risk option, they will not cost a draft pick. Kudaro is suppose to be the best available and maybe had for 7 -10 mil.
it's the phucco family!!colon is a TERRIBLE idea.
Kudaro would be good.
The Phillies have 10 Million to spend this year, and 30 Million to spend next year. That is 40 Million Dollars, plus this years, and next years raised ticket prices.Something very big is going to happen. Fasten your seat belts.
SirAlden- nothing "big" is going to happen besides Manuel's wasteline expanding.
i'd be happy with signing kris benson. i mean it's now like we need him to be our ace, King Cole handles that job perfectly. also, with myers possible coming back to the rotation, we could move adam "suck" eaton to the bullpen and let him languish. i think though, that i would love to see us sign mark prior, i know he's basically been a bust in chicago after so much hype, but he's only in his late 20's, so if he straightens out for us, it could be a great signing. GO PHILS IN '08!
With the state of free agent starting pitching, I think Prior because of "prior" hype will still be expensive. Benson on the otherhand is a fallen star with something left to prove and should come for about 2 mil.
