Barbaro Award

The Barbaro Award is given to the Phillie that hung around way too long and should have been put out of their misery long ago.

This year's winner is: Jose Mesa.

Mesa ended his first Phillies stint with a 6.52 ERA. It should have been over, but he made a miraculous recovery, errr, comeback with the Pirates and Colorado. So much so that Detroit gave the 40 year old reliever a $2.5 million deal. And then KABOOM!, he blew up. He posted a 12.35 ERA with the Tigers. Still, the Phils thought that was good enough, and signed him when he was released from Detroit. A 5.54 Phillies ERA was an improvement, but in a way that Plastic Surgery Courtney Love is an improvement over Regular Courtney Love.

Although I don't support euthanization of useless, aging relief pitcher, hopefully we've seen the last of Joe Table. And Courtney Love, for that matter...

I'd be more OK with them signing Courtney Love than Jose Mesa. Actually, I'd be more OK with them resigning Kurt Cobain right now than Jose Mesa.

Don't forget, Courtney Love is always good for some public display furburger too.

Oh come on fellas, you know you have a soft spot in your heart for a strung-out white trash floozy...give a lady a chance...hahaha!

Carson has a valid point boys.

pros...
#1 chicks that love smack will do anything in bed, conscious or not
#2 she will most likely be taking a dope nap around game time, ergo - no "hey take out the garbage instead of watching the game"
#3 probably not uptight about alternative relationships involving an extra lady in the sack(aka menage a trois) once again, conscious of not (either lady).

cons...
#1 keep an eye on your wallet at all times
#2 may sell TV for smack, ergo no TV to watch game

You forgot to mention that if you date her, you'll have to write Hole's next record, since she doesn't have any talent outside of making a total jackass fool of herself while in public (generally with the assistance of some combination of alcohol and hard drugs).

Who's Courtney Love?

Actually who cares?

Mesa was a band-aid the Phillies needed because Gillick neglected to work on the bullpen in the offseason ... I hope we won't be going through any of this next season.

Every bullpen needs a band-aid during the season, but Mesa was more like gauze with super glue adhesive and iodine...hurts to put on and tear off.

Just read the Phils are interested in Tom Glavine. They wanted him hardcore when he was a free agent and took the Mets money, but now I don't see how we'd have the funds to land him and he seems like a lock for Atlanta anyway.

Also read the Phils may have interest in the camera lovin' old lefty Kenny Rogers...once again, don't see that happening.

From MLBTradeRumors.com- The Phillies need a starting pitcher, maybe two. Problem is, they may only have $10MM left to spend. All of that money is expected to go to pitching, so Aaron Rowand should pack his bags.

Todd Zolecki says the Phils won't attempt to retain Kyle Lohse. Carlos Silva seems too pricey. Instead, Zolecki names Hiroki Kuroda, Kris Benson, Matt Clement, Livan Hernandez, Tom Glavine, Mark Prior, Shawn Chacon, and Joe Kennedy as possibilities.

Scott Lauber has heard from Ruben Amaro Jr. that the team will definitely consider Japanese options like Kuroda and reliever Masahide Kobayashi. Trading for pitching seems unlikely, as the Phils would probably have to part with Shane Victorino to get anyone decent.

*I like the idea of bring Benson or Clement in on a low salary with incentives. This gives insurance to the rotation if/when Eaton implodes. Joe Kennedy could be a useful swingman...another lefty in the 'pen.
