The Barbaro Award is given to the Phillie that hung around way too long and should have been put out of their misery long ago.
This year's winner is: Jose Mesa.
Mesa ended his first Phillies stint with a 6.52 ERA. It should have been over, but he made a miraculous recovery, errr, comeback with the Pirates and Colorado. So much so that Detroit gave the 40 year old reliever a $2.5 million deal. And then KABOOM!, he blew up. He posted a 12.35 ERA with the Tigers. Still, the Phils thought that was good enough, and signed him when he was released from Detroit. A 5.54 Phillies ERA was an improvement, but in a way that Plastic Surgery Courtney Love is an improvement over Regular Courtney Love.
Although I don't support euthanization of useless, aging relief pitcher, hopefully we've seen the last of Joe Table. And Courtney Love, for that matter...
