Saturday Extravaganza

8 is Enough?:Now with only 8 games left to play in the regular season and 1.5 back in both the NL East and Wild Card races I'm wondering if the Phils have enough time. It's conceivable that the Phils could win all their remaining games and still fall short of a postseason berth. This seems all too familiar to seasons past when the Phils came oh-so-close to fall 1 or 2 games short of the ultimate goal of the playoffs. As the number of games left on the schedule dwindles it feels as though the "games back" number increases...never has 1.5 felt so large.

Square Pegs in the Oval Office:
There were 2 too many dumbasses in the White House yesterday, as Charles Fuqua Manuel and 6 of his players paid President Bush a visit. Imagine the conversation between the two brainiacs Manuel and Bush...
Fuqua- "Um, gee, ah, this is quite, duh, um, place you got here. It big!"
W- "Why thanks, you know we grow 'em bigger in Texas. Course this is Washington, but it's a helluva state too."
Fuqua- "Washington? We're on the Left Coast?"
W- "Well yeah, notice the Starbucks on the corner and all the rain...Seattle's best for ya."

MVP:
Jimmy Rollins is having a tremendous all-around season and is finally getting noticed for it on a national scale. Sarge keeps pounding the "J-Roll for MVP" drum every chance he gets, and others are starting to jump on the bandwagon...the more the merrier. 132 runs, 201 hits, 38 doubles, 18 triples, 29 homeruns, 90 rbi, 37 stolen bases, 362 total bases, .295 batting average, and a .876 OPS to go along with his outstanding fielding and clubhouse leadership. Matt Holiday, Prince Fielder, and David Wright are also having terrific seasons, but in my opinion Rollins edges them out.

Price of Inflation:
Allow me to take this moment to make something abundantly clear- I HATE ADAM EATON! Every time he takes the mound I honestly wish I could bum rush the field and kick him in the nuts with steel-toed boots. I hate his face, I hate his demeanor, I hate his contract, but most of all I hate his pitching. 3 years 24.5 million is the price we paid to get a pitcher with a craptacular 6.33 era, a shitorific 1.61 whip, a near Tony Gwynn-like .299 average against, and a measly 5 and a half innings per start.

Bullpen Buddies:
JC Romero, Tom Gordon, and Brett Myers have been used in that exact order for the better part of September. Believe it or not, the trio has pitched rather effectively. However, yesterday marked the 4th straight game in which Manuel used the 3 of them, and that means all of them are probably unavailable for tonight's game in Washington. Phillies.com had this to say about the situation, "Brett Myers, Tom Gordon and J.C. Romero checked their extremities while warming up in the bullpen.". I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't want to read about Myers, Gordon, and Romero peeping in on their man-pieces during the game...save that stuff for the showers!

I'm giving myself a pat on the back for finding a way to work 3 late 70's/early 80's tv shows into today's post...bravo GM-Carson.

I'm in a fantastic mood today. It feels like playoff baseball right now. I truly hope the Phils can find a way (aka GET LUCKY!) to make it into the playoffs.

Once again alot of runs today will give the Three Amigos a rest.

As for MVP it is going to be close, Matt Holiday in my opinion has had the best offensive season. Not necessarily the best MVP season, as JRoll will likely contend for Gold Glove also. Holiday leads in BA, hits, 2B, RBI, and is near tops in many more. That will make it hard to decide. Ryan Howard will fall short but his 40Hrs and 122RBIs will some votes, as will Utley getting some votes. Other Phillies that should get consideration for MVP will include Burrell, Rowand, and Abe Nunez.

2 Wins Against The Cards - CHECK!

(2 down) 3 More Wins Against The Nationals

2 Wins Against The Braves

9 Wins -- 89-63 5-3 .667

Will 89 now be enough?

If either the Padres or the Mets go 4-5 then there would be a one game playoff. We have won 8 of the last 9 to put us in this awesome spot.

If we go 5-3 which is very doable, and we will have 89 Wins. Either the Padres or the Mets would have to go 3-6 for us to have a spot outright.

If we go 6-2 I think we will at least get a playoff game. It is olly olly oxen free now - with who ever stumbles being on the sidelines for the playoffs. It is very important that we have not one but 2 targets.

If the Phillies keep Winning with no pitching, then "The Comeback Kids" will erase the blight of the 1964 collapse, and that is very very high praise indeed. Nothing would be nicer than to "tag your it chokers" to the Mets.

Keep cool, keep kind, don't get in a bind...

As I typed early this week- they may be phoolin' us, but it sure is phun!

If 89 wins doesn't get you into the playoffs something is wrong. Oh wait, the lousy NL Central is what is wrong. Those pieces of shit will most likely have less wins than the Phils again, but get the automatic playoff bid nonetheless.

Maria said...

The NL Central is a joke. If the Phils were in that division, they'd have a 3 game lead!

Of the 9 runs the Mets scored, 8 unearned. That's disappointing.

Oh and Jimmy's only 1 HR away from a 30/30 season.

with eight games left, i just have a feeling we can make the playoffs. the way we've been playing lately just leads me to believe that this team is not going to go down like last years team did. they fight every day, and have 48 come from behind wins. i might be naive, but i just can't shake the hope that this team has, despite adam "suck" eaton, to make the playoffs.

GM-Carson said...

I agree this team has more "fight" in them in years past, and that's mostly due to the outstanding offense. However, they could go and win the rest of their games and still not make the playoffs. Once again, a shitty-ass start is coming back to haunt them. These shitty Aprils always come back to bite the Phils in the ass...remember 4-11?!

A leftover thought I have from yesterday's thread is that "Steady as She Goes" is an offering from the Raconteurs, not the White Stripes. Granted, Jack White is in both bands, but the Raconteurs are a combination of him with the Greenehornes (not that this really matters to the playoff chase).

With 8 games to go and the gaps between the Phils and the Padres and Mets being what they are, I'm wondering if we need to put up a 7-1 record minimum to reach the playoffs. Why is it every time I look at the math, my thoughts go back to the 4-11 start?

GM-Carson said...

Jacobin- thanks for correcting me on the "Steady as She Goes" thing. I only heard Jack White's voice and assumed...but that makes an ass out of u and me...hahaha, that's so elementary.

The Marlins are a bunch of dickheads. They committed 6 errors last night and have already committed one today against the Mets.

YUM.

It will be interesting whether the Twins shop Johan Santana this winter for a bona fide third baseman and a couple of high-level prospects if they determine they can't justify re-signing the reigning Cy Young Award winner for an anticipated $20 million a year.

YUM. Gillick has us postioned to go after SP Santana and 3B Cabrera, and now our great run scoring machine just might overcome the park issues to a starter.

Jacobin said...

Carson, no problem. Only reason I knew what band has that song is that I'm a Greenhornes fan and I went out and bought the Raconteurs album when I learned they were teaming up (temporarily?) with Jack White. Umm... the record is pretty good, though it's not as much fun as Greatest White Liar by Nic Armstrong and the Thieves.

Right now the Mets are leading the Marlins 5-1 in the seventh, so it looks like the queens of Queens will win again today. Hopefully the Rockies take another one from the Padres tonight and we can get within a half game of them with a win over the 'Nats.

Jacobin said...

Kendrick looks good through five tonight, though it would be nice if the offense could give him more than a single run in support!

Mets won today (as expected), so I'll be rooting for the Rockies tonight against the Padres. The Rockies are right behind the Phils in the wild card standings, so they do have something desperate to play for. The ideal would be the Rockies sweep the Padres and the Phillies sweep the 'Nats!

Jacobin said...

Ryan Howard's drive for the ignoble record books is thriving and only a miracle will prevent him from passing Adam Dunn as Major League Baseball's all-time free swinger! With three strikeouts so far tonight, Howard needs just 2 Ks to tie Dunn's record of 195 whiffs in a season! The only real question is how far past 200 will Howard push the record? Not bad for a guy who missed quite a few games earlier this season with an injury!

Huge play at the plate. Just imagine how big the collective sigh of relief across the world.

Get the Zimmer now Geary.

Wwwooooooooo hooooooo!!!

Go Phillies!!!!!!!!

YEAH!

Siralden, you are correct that Gillick has this team set for a big pick up this winter. Sanatana or Cabrera are possibilities. I do not expect a 3B to be acquired but a starter and possibly 2 or 3 relievers are very likely.
I hope they can bring back Romero and Werth, that would be huge for next year.
However, the Phils are primed for another win tonight with a 3-1 lead in the 10th as they continue this incredible playoff run. This has actually gotten very fun and exciting.

Bob D said...

Make that 4-1 now. I guess Vic is hurt as Helms pinch ran and got thrown out at the plate.

chuckm said...

Pleased with the win tonight, will the Phillies *finally* get over that 1.5 back hump?

Thank you Mike Cameron!

The Padres LOSE! to the Rockies again.

0.5 games back in the Wild Card. With the 9th victory in 10 games.

Monday's off day for the Phils will be huge. Both the Mets and the Padres have a make-up game.

If they lose, or one loses, that will be great, or good for the Phils, if they both win it could be bad...

Jacobin said...

Hell, let's win again tomorrow and see if the Rockies can dump the Padres again!

BloodStripes said...

Our super bullpen has only given up two earned runs in the past 30 2-3 innings.

GM-Carson said...

I truly can't believe the job the bullpen has done within the last week. Romero, Myers, and Gordon have now gone 5 straight games and they look...dare I say...good.

The offense sucked last night, but a win is a win, and that's what we need right now.

.5 back in the Wild Card, man this is exciting!
