Phillies Phlashback Phridays: Desi Relaford

You may be asking yourself the question- Why in the hell is he featuring Desi Relaford in a Phillies Phlashback? Trust me, I have a good reason, and that reason is that I was wondering who was the Phillies starting shortstop before Mr. Jimmy Rollins, potential 2007 NL MVP, came to town. Jimmy's first exposure in Philly was a brief call-up in 2000 when Desi Relaford happened to be the crown jewel of the NL at shortstop. Desi had been with the Phils since 1996 and was doing his best Abe Nunez impression at the plate batting .175, .184, .245, .242, and .221 before being traded to San Diego midseason in 2000 for David Newhan. Newhan never really did anything for the Phils, but honestly they were ecstatic somebody actually took the no-talent ass-clown Relaford off their hands. Desi was a 4th round draft pick by Pat Gillick's favorite team the Seattle Mariners back in 1991 and was traded to the Phils for Terry Mulholland. Aside from the Phillies, Relaford has played for the Padres, Mets, Mariners, Royals, Rockies, and Rangers. He was out of professional baseball in 2006 but made a brief 14 game/26 at bat comeback with Texas this season. He has since been released from the Rangers, which means Patty G will be signing him to a lucrative contract this offseason. It's a shame we let Desi go in the first place, because his replacement Rollins has been such a disappointment.

*1st place in the NL East. Wow! The Phillies truly do control their own fate. They need to sweep the Nationals, because losing is a scary proposition. Hopefully the Marlins can keep the Mets scuffling, and to make things interesting the Brew Crew take the next 3 from the Padres, and Arizona take a couple from the Rockies too.

*Right now it feels like playoff baseball, so just imagine the intensity of how it will be in October. This team has a chance to make the city of Philly and all its fans believe and triumph...lets go Phils!!!

Good stuff bro! Phils are on phire and set to continue the rampage with Hamels on the hill.

If you like good omens I got one today. Wearing my Phils cap at the park with my kids a woman came over and asked if I were a Phils phan. "Bloody oath I am lady" i said. She was stoked. She and her family are from Philadelphia but living here now. She was amazed to find a Phils phan here in Oz and overjoyed with the news of the days events. Its all good Downunder.

Speaking of phans, young ace Collier has one helluva good winning record as a Phils Phan.

Yeah baby!

All the way to the top Phightin's!

My baby boy Collier Chase has the winning charm!

Hamels better stay in the game as long as he's effective tonight.

Go Phils!

Is that you rubbing that bobblehead for good luck? Haha...

Great job with this blog all season, fellas. I thoroughly enjoy the Phlashbacks -- bittersweet memories of players we used to barely tolerate, and only because we were numb to all the losing at the time.

I subscribe to only three Phillies blogs, and your stuff is always a refreshing switch from the sabermetric circle-jerking that sometimes goes on at Beerleaguer and the Zo Zone. Keep it up.

one thing you can say about relaford, he has a cannon for an arm. he probably would have been a better pitcher. the phils should have gone reverse-ankiel on him in '96.

twistedwristah said...

It says on Wikipedia that Relaford pitched one inning with the Mets. He threw a perfect inning, one strikeout, and over 90MPH.

GM-Carson said...

You gotta love Desi's hightop fade with the steps on his rookie card too. His cannon of an arm made him a future outfielder...too bad he could barely hit.

2 Wins Against The Cards - CHECK!

3 Wins Against The Nationals - CHECK!

2 Wins Against The Braves - CHECK!

2 Wins Against The Nationals

We need to go 2-1 .667

9 Wins -- 89-63

Will 89 now be enough?
3-0 will give us 90 Wins.

That game last night was as Mike Horner used to say, jizzerific.

I got a call this morning from my mother letting me know that she'll be at the game tonight. I won't be, so I'm feeling some jealousy at the moment.

Last night's win was great, but the Phillies need to keep winning. I know the Nationals have been playing hard as of late, but we need to sweep them and leave nothing to chance.

3-0 vs. Nats. 13-games ago, thought they needed to wrap up at 10-3 - so far they're 7-3.

It's gonna take 90, either way.

That's not to say we should be on suicide watch if they lose Saturday, but still - 90 feels right.

GM-Carson said...

Winning tonight is crucial. Sure I'll be paying attention to the Mets games' outcomes, but really what we need to do is win. If we win tonight that is the first step towards the postseason for the first time in 14 years!

I'm sitting here on my lunch break waiting for the chance for the server to become unbusy so I can purchase Phillies playoff tickets. Yes, I won a chance to buy 3 tickets, but it's first come first serve right now and I'm in a "virtual waiting room"...ugh!

GM-Carson said...

I just got 3 tickets for the first home game of the NLDS...the damn well better make it!

CLARE. said...

The atmosphere last night was unbelievable. The SOUND. This sounds really queer, but I feel really, really lucky and privileged to have been there.

Carson, I got NLDS tickets too! Where are your seats? Mine are in 425. Anybody going down on Sunday to try to get SRO tickets?

GM-Carson said...

I actually don't know where my tickets are for. Damn, I better go check. Don't worry, if the Phils make the playoffs, I'll be posting my exact seat number on the blog.

GM-Carson said...

Right now on ESPN.com they are having a poll about the MLB playoffs and the Phils are actually the favored team to win the World Series out of 3,679 votes receiving 29.2%. Go vote here- http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/polling?event_id=3168

ahhhhhh. i don't get the game on tv. cw57? is that a real channel? ahhhhhhh...

BloodStripes said...

Try this out Corey.

http://www.myp2p.eu/MLB.htm

left sidebar download sopcast. That might do it for you for free. Live stream. Check it out. Some guys on beerleaguer use it. Works most times I think. That link should say if game is on or not and on which player.

Bob D said...

bloodstripes, thanks for the link - it doesn't work great but was OK. Awesome game so far Howard a bomb, Rollins a key hit, Hamels just dominate. And best yet the Mets are down by 3 in the 7th.

BloodStripes said...

Hamels was brillaint.

BloodStripes said...

good stuff Bob. I have MLB.TV so I haven't even tried it yet but will give it a go soon for other sports. Glad it worked.

3 outs Clay. Lets go!

Jason Stark has a good story on the Phillies right now too. At least I enjoyed it:

This never happens in philly.

BloodStripes said...

Excellent read Jacobin. Wow man, this is awesome.

I'm sure everyone is worried about Eaton but if he can't get inspired by the past few days events and pitch well, he never will. The hook will be out early if he doesn't but reckon he will come up with something. At least keep us in it for our superior offense to take the win.

The 2007 Phils are rewriting Phils history. Like Stark says. It's not supposed to happen like this in Philadelphia. But it is. Its been a long and tremendous phight back. No way its gonna stop now.

GM-Carson said...

Thank god for XM, as I got to listen to the Phils win and the Mets lose last night.

Cole Hamels found his "balls" last night, and is off the hook for being a "pussy" for the time being.

I really think they'll pull this off!

That's a nice picture of the guy pushing the Carlton bobblehead with the plush Phillie Phanatic and Staples Easy button etc rooting the Phills to victory. I wonder where you could have gotten such a great photo! :)

(It's me, you must have seen it on my Flickr page or something!) I'm glad somebody enjoyed it!

GM,

Can I recommend either Kent Tekulve or Rick Schu for next Friday's selection?
