Heartbroken...

...not only because the Phillies lost last night, but because I have been looking forward to Eaton v. Smoltz for over a week, and now it looks like it won't happen. Manuel has moved Kendrick and Hamels up a day so that Kendrick will now square off with Smoltz on Thursday, and Eaton will get the ball against the Gnats on Saturday.

This is probably a good move for the club, but not for fans who appreciate epic showdowns. Eaton v. Smoltz in a playoff run, well that's like Ali v. Frazier, America v. Germany, or AJ Benza v. Stuttering John. These sort of matchups rarely happen, and we are all being deprived of the opportunity to witness history. Thanks Fuqua.

I thinking along the lines of USA vs Bermuda.

I see the Phils claim a TJ Bohn from the Braves. The Phils are trying to corner the market with players who only use initials as thier first name (AJ Happ, JD Durbin, etc...). Maybe they are alias to protect them from being prosecuted by Jacobin.

Corey said...

TJ Bohn sounds like the name for an adult film "actor"

GM-Carson said...

Corey- you hit a new high in regards to your sarcasm meter in today's post...wow!

Screw Adam Eaton!!!

The Braves and our pitching are going to screw us out of a playoff spot.

Yeah, I'd have to say it's more like USA v. Grenada, if you remember that.

With only five games left, I'd like to say that I love this team. I'm not saying I love the organization, the management, or the front office. But as far as the players go, this is a great group. Considering how shitty the pitching has been, how dumb the manager has been at times, and the foibles of the front office, the players could have easily rolled over and quit at many points during the season. But there hasn't been any quit from the players, instead they have kept fighting back.

Will this team make the playoffs? I have no idea at this point. I felt good about it yesterday, but with the Padres winning and the Phils losing... well, it's an up and down ride. What I do know is that this team and it's determination to keep fighting is great. Couple that with the fact that no one goes around blaming others for the problems, and you have quite a team.

I love our offense. I don't love the team. Just put a mediocre pitching staff with this offense the past 3 or 4 seasons and we're looking at multiple playoff spots. However, our pitching is horrible and even the best offense in the NL and one of the tops in the Majors can't make up for it enough. I'm disgusted that almost ever member of our bullpen has a +4.00 era...what the hell are we- Tampa Bay?!?!?!?!

Very disappointing loss last night.
I mean, for *once* could a Phillies starting pitcher come in, take chareg and shut down a lineup for 7 innings?

GM-Carson said...

Jamie Moyer got some tough non-called strikes, but overall, he's been a disappointment for the past few months. He's old, so that's to be expected. I'd love to go out with a World Series victory this year so he can retire on a high note, because if he comes back next year, he may challenge Eaton for worst era among starting pitchers in baseball.

Excellent Jacobin. Excellent.

I love blaming others...I blame Gillick, Manuel, Dubee, the owners, Eaton, the bullpen, Helms, Nunez, etc.

Dear Santa,

Please help our Phillies have the most plate appearances in history they need 200 PA's in the last 5 games, or 40.00 per game to go down in history.

Please help Jimmy Rollins get at least 2 triples, and 9 RBI's would be very nice.

Please help Ryan Howard get at least 1 run scored, 10 total bases, and a mess of home runs.

Please help Chase Utley get at least 3 doubles, 5 total bases, and 1 stolen base.

Please help Pat Burrell get at least 1 homerun, and 5 RBI's.

Please help Aaron Rowand at least 2 RBI's.

Thanks Santa!

I blame the PIRATES for being swept! Losing all 4 games to the Padres....

SirAlden- how the hell can you blame me for drafting my son? The kid has got a killer slider!

With so much drama in the LBC,
It's kinda hard being Snoop D-O-double G.

Drama:
*Gillick now says he's uncertain if he'll retire after his contract runs up in 2008.

*The umpire involved in the Milton Bradley incident was suspended for the remainder of the season. Public Enemy #1 Bradley had this to say- "It's terrible. And now, because of him, my knee's hurt," he said after the game. "If this costs me my season because of that, he needs to be reprimanded. I'm taking some action. I'm not going to stand pat and accept this because I didn't do nothing wrong."
*His use of the doulbe negative in the final sentence shows that he indeed did do something wrong.

*Prince Fielder and Cecil Fielder are at odds and exchanging barbs via the medio. Now Prince wants to hit 52 homeruns this season so- "My dad had 51," Fielder said. "Then, he can't say anything."

*Can't we all just get along?

dont start with the santa shit. its september for fuck's sake!! i was in home depot today and they were actually setting up christmas stuff and playing the goddamn music.

I will be optimistic about tonight. I think the Phils bounce back and hammer Hudson, and that Lohse throws
a quality start.

BloodStripes said...

Good laugh Corey. Being Phils phans we need one.

It's easier being negative because when the Phils fail I can act tough and say I knew it all along but I don't wanna give up just yet.I'm with Chuckm. Lets bounce back.

new rule on the blog: no name calling whatsoever. apparently, certain insults can tear an ACL. i'm not sure if written ones are as bad as spoken, but let's be on the safe side.

benjah, I hate that the Christmas stuff comes out earlier and earlier each year, but I'm part of the problem: I bought a tree ornament this weekend that depicts J-Roll, Ry Ho and Chutley high-fiving. I love it.

These boys have me for one more week. Like the poster in Mulder's basement office says, I want to believe!

Bob D said...

Dear Santa, I want a Phillie ornament just like Clare's.
I want the Phillies to beat the Braves the next 2 days just like USA did to Grenada.
I want all of the Padre's players to hurt themselves while argueing with the Ump.
And I want the Mets give up and not show up for the last 5 games.
Thank You.

BloodStripes said...

State of emergency.

BloodStripes said...

2 games out is no way too far for the Phils with the mets crumbling, collapsing, choking. Hahahahaahahaha!!!!

Bob D said...

WooHoo! another win!
Go Nats! beat those Mets!

chuckm said...

I would like to pat myself on the back for correcting hunching that the Phils would get to Hudson and Lohse would throw a QS start. As for tomorrow?, I'll just say that I am confident in Kendricks ability and that the Phillies can get runs off of Smoltz. I will go with Phils winning a tight game tomorrow. Lets go Nats!
Bums and Jints!!!

Bob D said...

Chuckm, good call to blast the rotation for not being able to go 7 innings earlier in the day. It seems they step up and produce after they are blasted here.

Jacobin said...

That was a big win, but they get bigger with each game left to play! Gotta take it to Smoltz tomorrow. Tonight's loss basically eliminated the Braves from the playoffs (barring three teams in front of them losing all of their remaining games). Now let's kick them while their down and kick them out of it for absolute, mathematical certainty!

chuckm said...

Mutts go down, unfortunately, Padres score the 2 runs they need to handle the godawful Giants....

Jacobin said...

Nice to see the Mets lose! Damn Padres are up 8-2 on the Giants right now though... I don't think the Phils can afford to lose another game this year. I pray that isn't asking too much.

chuckm said...

What the hell is up with this lineup the Dodgers are running out tonight
vs the Rox? Kent, Nomar, Furcal and Martin all sitting. Are they all hurt? No wonder they are being being shut down by Josh Fogg. Shit is not right.

das411 said...

Sorry guys, i've been away for a while....can someone tell me just how many homers J-Roll has now?

SirAlden said...

I blame you for making your son "GM "farts flowers but still does not appreciate Pat Gillick" Carson.

GOOD JOB.

BloodStripes said...

das411, Jimmy has 30 home-runs. He is now a member of the 30-30 club with his 37 steals. Great achievement.

He is also hitting .353 (12 for 34) against Smoltz with 3 taters and 3 doubles.

GM-Carson said...

I didn't even think Jimmy would crack the 20 homerun barrier this season...30-30 is awesome. His season has been awesome. And if the Phils make the playoffs he's the MVP.

Good pitching last night...about damn time!

Kendrick going tonight actually calms me a bit, but facing Smoltz does not.

The freakin' Rockies have now won 10 in a row.

*By the way, I think Walmart keeps their Christmas stuff out year round, or at least it seems that way.

bob d, I got my ornament at Kohl's. It's on sale this week for $14.99.

Four more to go! Can we do it?
