Screw Words

Nice mate. Very nice. Triumphant Phils.

Please excuse my double up but I just put this comment on the last thread. May as well put it here on the new one.

This Florida series makes me nervous. The Marlins have been pitiful lately. It would be just our luck for them to come good right now. I also reckon the Phillies are not as good going in as favourites. They are better off being written off. They are good at raising expectation but have had trouble playing up to it once risen.

Prove me wrong Phils. Keep the momentum.

Nice, but you needed a picture of a Billy Goat next to that Goat Billy Wagner!

That was a huge series, but we still have ground to make up. No letting up now... we need to reel in the reeling Marlins! Cole should be back on Sunday and I'm looking forward to the Return of the King.

Getting Cole back will be a huge boost to this team, much along the lines of the Utley infusion.

This teams screws with me so much. How the hell are they still in this thing?

BloodStripes said...

Because they are the Phightin' Phils. These guys are good when the chips are down and have played mighty well against NY but they have to prove to us that they are also good when things are up and expected to win. Gotta win the Florida series to keep the respect they have just earnt.

Well said Carson. It was good to be a Philly fan this week. Lets hope they keep it up. No throwing in the towel.

I don't mean to sound too harsh in the above comment but now is the time to stand up and be counted.

Cole's return sunday is perfect timing.

Thursday August 30th, 2007 will be a day that will forever be indelibly etched in our memories.

The memories of older phans of the 1964 Phillies. The Jim Bunning, NL Rookie of the Year Dick Allen team, who lead the National League by 6 1/2 games with just 12 left to play in the season whose historic collapse losing 10 straight scarred every one of us for life.

The memories of phans who followed the Hall of Famer Teams of 1974-80 World Series Tug McGraw "you gotta believe", and the "'83 Wheeze Kids" teams.

The memories of scorched younger phans of Monty/Giles worst non-caring ownership in modern day period, whose great hard charging "scrap iron" 1993 Phillies (only one of three teams to go from last place to the World Series the next year) who would overcome a 5-1 defect in Game 6 to take a 6-5 lead, then "Wild Man" Mitch Williams would blow it, yielding a series winning 3-run HR to Joe Carter in the bottom of the 9th.

The Memories of new fans, whose Rollins SS, to Utley 2B, to Howard 1B arguably may be the best ever Phillies of All-Time at their positions.

Yesterday's Win in excitement and heroics, heartstrings, (and hopefully significance), will only be matched by in Phillies history by Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS with the Houston Astros.

Trailing the Astros and Nolan Ryan 5-2 in the 8th Inning of Game 5, the Phillies exploded for 5 runs to take a lead 7-5.

Seemingly won like yesterday the game, it was not over yet. The Astros battled back tying the game at 7-7 sending the game into extra innings.

Garry Maddox (the greatest 6th batter in Phillies History) would give the Phils an 8-7 lead with a RBI single in the 10th, then Dick Ruthven pitching in relief nailed down the save, the Phillies winning their first NL Pennant in 30 years.

Together - yesterday's game, and Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS with the Houston Astros are the two greatest games played by the Phightin's in my lifetime.

Here is hoping that the sweep of the Mets will wash away the petty bitterness, and heal the scars, as we love our team Win or Lose deep into October...

Sir Alden- you make some good points about Rollins, Utley, and Howard. Jimmy is already the best Phils shortstop ever. Give Utley and Howard another season or so and they are easily the best and 2nd and 1st too.

GM-Carson said...

By the way- Freddy Garcia will not be an option in September because he just opted for shoulder surgery.

When rosters expand tomorrow (Sept. 1) expect some of the following to be called up/activated from the 40 man roster- Barajas, Mathieson, Castro, Ennis, Roberson, Madson (when healthy), Mateo, Bourn (when healthy), and possibly Happ.

It's time to get things moving now. Two back. Let's go Fightins.

7 and 7

"If the Mets cannot rebound and wind up forfeiting the NL East lead, they would join six other teams in ignominious company. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only teams since 1900 that held a lead of at least seven games on Aug. 25 or later and did not win their division or the pennant were the 1995 Angels, the 1978 Red Sox, the 1964 Phillies, the 1951 Dodgers, the 1938 Pirates and the 1934 Giants. -- NY Times

I truly hope we continue winning, because right now today is one of the happiest days I've ever had as a Phillies fan.

I've always wanted to go to a Phillies game for my birthday. Since my birthday is October 25, you can understand why I haven't gone to a game to celebrate. This year? Maybe?

BenJah said...

no offense, sir alden, but i don't think we'll remember that date - specifically - if the phils don't make the playoffs. i seem to recall some great games last year, but they don't seem to matter much now.

i just feel like defending a guy i hate for a moment: i don't know what goes through fuqua's mind when he makes his substitutions, but there is something to be said for getting everyone involved. we have 3 thirdbasemen, and none of them have complained about playing time. i don't understand why he depletes his bench every game by the 6th or 7th inning, but seems to give everyone a chance to be the hero. maybe the players play hard because they all feel ownership of the team's record. i'll crap if he is voted manager of the year, but despite whatever the media and phlogosphere say about him, the players seem to like him and play hard for him, and that's pretty much all that really matters.

Win #6 in a row. I love winning, it's so much fun.

I don't agree with it, but Charlie Manuel will end up being the NL Manager of the Year.

Kyle Kendrick is everything we hoped for and more, Corey is even a fan now.

Jimmy Rollins is the shiznit!

GM-Carson said...

Jacboin- by the way, my b-day is October 13th and Corey's is October 22nd and the last time the Phils were playing on those dates we were only 13 years old. Howerver, if the Phils makes the playoffs this season, we'll find a way to be there.
