Phillies Phlashback Phriday: Gary Redus

In honor of the weekend series between the Phils and the Buccos I am featuring a member of the Phucco Phamily Tree in this jaunt down memory lane. Gary Redus had a MLB career that spanned 13 seasons in which he did nothing exceedingly well aside from stealing bases- 322 thefts. He began his career with Cincy in 1982 and the Phils acquired him for his lone season as a Phillie in '86 (love the powder blue uni). In '86 he played 90 games racking up 11 homeruns and 25 steals missing time due to injury. The Phils then traded him to the ChiSox for the infamous Joe Cowley, who some Phans will never forgive for 5 of the most horrible games ever compiled by a pitcher in a Phillies uniform. After a 2 year stint wearing white booties Redus made his way back to the National League and made a home for himself in the Pirates outfield from 88-92, playing in 3 postseasons. Redus did have one very memorable day with Pittsburgh on August, 25 1989 when he hit for the cycle. Gary later finished up his playing days with the Rangers in '94.

O Offense, Where Art Thou?
It's hard to believe the Phils actually won the Washington series considering they struck out 36 times and amassed only 9 runs. Losing Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, and Michael Bourn has finally caught up to them, as the offense has gone cold. Here's a look at each players' recent performance (Hits/At Bats, Average).
Burrell (1-13, .077), Howard (3-22, .136), Rowand (4-24, .167), Rollins (8-43, .186), Iguchi (3-22, .136), Dobbs (3-15, .200), Nunez (1-8, .125), Werth (4-22, .182), Roberson (1-12, .083), Helms (2-9, .222) and Coste (5-20, .250). The only players that have played well of late have been Carlos Ruiz and Russell Branyan (albeit in only 2 at bats).

The Player Who Cried Grievance:
Salomon Torres recently rescinded his grievance claim against the Pittsburgh Pirates for cheating him out of money. Torres does what few MLB players do, he represents himself in contract negotiations. His gripe with the team is that he signed a below market value contract extension this spring with the idea of making extra income by renting one of his training facilities in the Dominican Republic to the Pirates. This "gentleman's agreement" never came to fruition and Torres felt he was swindled out of some cash flow. I think him making 2.7 million this season and 3.2 next season is a gift considering he pitches for the cash-strapped Buccos, and currently is sporting a 5.40 era. Maybe it's the Pirates that should be filing a grievance against Torres instead.

Quick Thoughts:
*Sarge continues to refer to players "clutching up" when they do something right. Every time he says it I think of an 85 year old man clutching his chest with a heart attack...not positive mental imagery in my opinion.

*How much money have the Phils wasted this season in terms of poor performance and injury-riddled players? Just think what we could do with the cash sent Jim Thome, Jon Lieber, Freddy Garcia, Rod Barajas, and Tom Gordon's way...probably buy another overpriced outfielder like Pat Burrell.

*Ryan Howard sucks against our buddies from Western PA. Lifetime against the Pirates, Howard is batting .115 with a .299 OPS and 25 k's in only 52 ab's with no homers...that's pathetic.

From Phillies.com- Catcher Rod Barajas (strained right groin) said he's heading to Class A Lakewood on Friday to begin a rehabilitation assignment. He's been running the bases and throwing without incident. He expects to catch. He's eligible to be activated on Aug. 18. ... Manager Charlie Manuel said he's growing concerned about the high innings total for Kyle Kendrick. The rookie right-hander has thrown 156 innings between Reading and Philadelphia and is 20 away from his career high in a season. Organizations try to monitor young players as they develop. "He's never been in September, and that's a big thing," Manuel said. "That's a lot of baseball. Any time you see someone who hasn't put in a full season, you're concerned about it."

SirAlden said...

Two weeks till Sept, if we are still in it we have Utley, Victorino, and our September Call-ups (Happ and Castro).

With Garcia, and Bourne in the wings. Barajas can be our Right Handed Branyan.

Big Fun. We are doing well with nothing to post about, so the Eeyores are posting that Ryan Howard is not a top talent, with the ability to lead the league in homers and rbi's every year.

Just wait till Howard gets to hit 5th like Willie Stargell, with Cabrara or A-Rod hitting in front of him and playing 3B.

GM-Carson said...

I'm fine with being considered an Eeyore if that means I'm pointing out the truth about Ryan Howard. All the things I say are facts. He's poor defensively, he strikes out at an alarming rate, and he's currently in a slump. He has tremendous power and I would not want him wearing another uniform, but he's far from perfect.

Corey said...

carson is eeyore? okay, then tadahito iguchi is piglet. mike zagurski is heffalump. cole hamels is christopher robin. and no one in this organization is owl...

i'm predicting 1 win in da 'burgh this weekend...

GM-Carson said...

Corey- you forgot Pooh, Rabbit, Tigger, and the Gopher. But my question to you is- how the hell did you know about the Heffalump? I know about the elephant looking thing because I have PEZ of it...you?

Only 1 win in the 'burgh? 2 needed minimum.

GM-Carson said...

Oh, I almost forgot Kanga and Roo...man, that A.A. Milne was very original with the names.

Corey said...

dude, i knew about heffalump because wikipedia told me. (and i have a heffalump tattoo...)

i'm guessing kanga and roo were kangaroos. so was pooh just a big pile of shit? if so, i'm going to call fuqua winnie.

from baseballamerica.com - "Supplemental first-rounder Travis D’Arnaud hit a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs for the GCL Phillies." - seven ribbies is impressive at any level.

GM-Carson said...

Phils currently 8 games above .500 at 64-56 (.533), that leaves them 3 behind the Mets in the NL East and 1 back of the Padres for the Wild Card. Taking 2 outta 3 this is a must this weekend, especially against weaker competition.

GM-Carson said...

"i'm guessing kanga and roo were kangaroos. so was pooh just a big pile of shit? if so, i'm going to call fuqua winnie." -that made me laught out loud...thanks.

Also in minor league action last night, former MLB pitcher Gary Knott pitched a 1-hitter in Reading. He's 30 years old and trying to make it back to the bigs after suffering an injury in '04 with the Tigers and recently playing independent ball. The independent route has worked wonders for Jose Offerman...

BloodStripes said...

Pat Burrell would be a good Winnie the Pooh. J-Roll would make a good Tigger, bouncing around SS making all those top plays. Fuqua can be Rabbit. Pacing around the dugout worried about everything. Kanga? The Phils have no Aussies! Make it Vic for his speed. He's always jumping about.

Phils to get the series win in Pittsburgh.

BloodStripes said...

Very soon Carson you will know all these wonderful characters very well. Books, DVD's and fluffy Pooh Bears may even inhabit your house. Not long now.

GM-Carson said...

"Kanga? The Phils have no Aussies! Make it Vic for his speed. He's always jumping about."
*Yeah, he's been jumping around in pain lately due to that strained calf muscle.

GM-Carson said...

"Very soon Carson you will know all these wonderful characters very well. Books, DVD's and fluffy Pooh Bears may even inhabit your house. Not long now."

*Has already happened, as Winnie the Pooh is the decor of the nursery for my soon-to-be son.

Jacobin said...

Winnie the Pooh really in no way resembles a drinking and smoking womanizer, so I'm thinking that Burrel might not be a good representation for that character... however, I'm not sure who you would put in that role other than maybe Ryan Howard. Pooh is somewhat clumsy, but when he comes through it is in a big way (not to mention he's pretty much the MVP of the 100 Acre Wood).

I also disagree on Owl. If this team has an owl, it's Jamie Moyer since it seems he's the one to give sage counsel to the young pitchers (Dubee is too busy firing up a spliff).

Of course, Chase Utley is the all-world second baseman with throwback tenacity and a genuine desire to do everything he can to succeed. Oh wait, there wasn't one of those in the Pooh books... but there should have been. Everyone needs a Chase Utley.

BloodStripes said...

Alright! You are all set. Good work mate. Pooh is good!

Corey got it right in saying Cole Hamels is Christopher Robin. There would'nt be another Phillie anywhere near close to making that match. He's our boy! And Pat Burrel of course.

BenJah said...

i'm shocked to see that siralden's comment actually inspired a decent conversation...though it probably wasn't what was intended.

btw: ryan howard IS a top talent and he IS struggling mightily. also, rbi is a bullshit stat - probably the most overrated in the game next to saves and batting avg.

BloodStripes said...

Its just that Burrell seems kinda slow and woozy. But you're right Jacobin. Howard makes a good Pooh. 'MVP of 100 Acre wood'. HAhaha....hilarious! Good call.

BloodStripes said...

Everyone slumps sometimes. Last years AL MVP Justin Morneau has been slumping also. As long as Pooh Bear I mean Howard is back and cranking shortly for the Phillies playoff run things should be alright.

Bob D said...

Joe Cowley was suppose to do wonders for the '87 Phils. Don't forget we traded for the guy who with the W-Sox pitched a no-hitter with only 7 walks and 1 earned run allowed.

I am amazed that there were no pictures of the sky diving accident in NJ this morning. Ex-Phil GM Ed Wade hanging 50 feet in the air by a parachute had to be rescued by a ladder truck from the fire department. I am sure that has happened to a Disney character at some point.

And Eeyore is awesome! (So Carson, maybe Siralden's comment may be a compliment). And my question is: since you questioned Corey for knowing about Heffalump, how is it that you knew all of the other characters except those from the land down under (Kanga & Roo)? Bloodstripes is probably upset with that.

Corey said...

the phillies have lost more games than any other team in sports history. they go hand in hand with losing. that kind of sucks. but now matter how bad it gets in phillie land, at least i'm not a braves fan.

watch this video

"are you ready?"
"oh yeah"

that was the conversation right before the one on the right took it 5-hole from the fag with the guitar. if you have to point out in your song that it isn't gay, that means it probably is. way to harmonize, douchebags.

SirAlden said...

Oh!

CARSON.......Carson.....carson...

You are not an Eeyore, you could never be an Eeyore. Your comments about Ryan Howard's fielding are dead on. I am hoping he can relax this offseason and really go at it to improve his defense to neutral, he has speed and a long reach, he should be able to.

I am refering to people (one of who was elegant in his word smithing, and one who never is),
who was professing that we should not be signing Howard.

We should sign him, he is coachable, from a great family, and a significant reason why a Free-Agent 3B or #1 Starting Pitcher would want to sign here.

furiousBall said...

If I were facing Tom Gordon, I would only look for a low fast ball middle in to hit over the fence. He throws one every at bat.

NOTE : This is given that I actually could hit anything over any fence.

SirAlden said...

Hey Corey!

Robinson Tejeda 1.78 WHIP 6.61 ERA

EQUALS

David Dellucchi .234 BA .301 OBP .389 OPS

EQUALS

"Supplemental first-rounder Travis D’Arnaud who hit a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs for the GCL Phillies."

Yet another under appreciated move by our savior Pat Gullick.

SirAlden said...

Consistant Runs Scored and RBI's are what puts another and another one in the Win Column for the Phightin' Phils.

BenJah said...

actually corey, i annoyed with that video clip because its a really a pretty clever song. had our team aquired a talent like that, my own giddiness would probably make me appear fruiticious.

siralden: i've tried not to say anything because this is not in any way my blog, but i think you're a bit annoying. your arguments make some sense, some of the time, but in general you seem to take the attitude that everyone else but you is a complete moron. i like draft picks, i like howard, i like marginally talented pitchers who try hard, but give me a fuckin break with JA happ and gillicks hunchs on who he signs and who he doesn't.

also (and i realize this is nit-picky) it's rbi, not rbi's. runs batted in, not runs batted ins. it's already plural.

Meet Bear Force One.

You're welcome.

GM-Carson said...

I thought the other day's veggie discussion was one of our best ever, but today's is awesome. First we managed to have a logical conversation about Winnie the Pooh characters and their counterparts on the Phils...that's amazing in and of itself. Now we got Benjah calling Sir Alden out...oh the drama! Oh and lets not forget "gay" music references. I can't wait to see how today's comment threads ends...

Don't worry, I will be in attendance at tonight's game, representing for those of us not fortunate enough to live in the Philadelphia area.

Plus, with a bonus Smashmouth concert after tonights game, if the Phillies lose tonight I'll have not one but TWO things to be embarrassed about!

GM-Carson said...

Corey on fire with the links today.

By the way, did anyone catch that Harry Kalas used the word "pilfered" in regards to stealing a base last night? That old man is awesome!

GM-Carson said...

Benjah- based on that excellent link Corey supplied you owe Sir Alden an apology.

Nevermind, apologies are for pussies!

Jacobin said...

I agree. I don't give a shit about the RBI-RBIs-RBI's-RsBI abbreviation controversy. I mentioned the Phillies to Pooh comparison to a friend of mine at work and the reaction was that it was kind of goofy and childish, but we both agreed that it would be exceedingly queer if we were comparing Phillies players to anime characters. So we might be childish and goofy, but we're just odd and not a bunch of creepy freaks.

GM-Carson said...

Hey, Jacobin- shoot me an email @ weshouldbegms@hotmail.com, I have a proposition for you. Wow, that sounded gay...

BenJah said...

thats just one website's, like, opinion man! i may offer the english language an apology, but siralden is still on the hook. lets not hyperfocus on just one nitpicky point. i would like to read the full response.

BenJah said...

and even if i am "wrong" it doesnt change the fact that rbfuckingwhatever is immensely overrated. scoring runs is the point, and whoever knocks them in is circumstancial and entirely lineup based. howard is cool, but even i would have a few rsbsis's if i batted in the middle of the best offense in the NL. even rico brogna managed 100 of "that stat" twice in his career. he's hardly an intimidating bat.

GM-Carson said...

Benjah- funny you bring up Rico Brogna and his 100+ rbi, as Corey and I have discussed how reaching 100 rbi now seems so hollow because he did it.

BenJah said...

yeah, carson, i'm sorry to start shit with posters on your blog.....i just couldnt let it go any longer. i don't mean to be so confrontational.

GM-Carson said...

Benjah- it was funny, and since it was funny it's allowed on this blog. No worries bro. I do appreciate Sir Alden though, because his ramblings make me laugh too.

as long as this doesn't turn into the comments section on beerleaguer its all good.

I don't know if you guys ever do this...but would there be any chance of me 'Guest Posting' since I am attending tonight's game? If so send me an email at grantismaximis@gmail.com

If not I totally understand, but I am a fan of the blog and it would be cool to contribute.

GM-Carson said...

Maximis- check your email!

So what happens if JD Durbin pitches well tonight and Eaton is ready to come off of the DL as soon as possible?

Jacobin said...

If Durbin pitches well, my guess is Eaton's injury lingers at least long enough for Durbin to have another start.

SirAlden said...

No offense Benjah. Hitters can get cheap RBIs just by showing up in the clean-up spot on a marginal team, just as pitchers can get loads of saves when everyone knows they suck as a reliever, i.e. Mesa being #1 in Saves as a Phillies reliever (one great year- the other years, cover your eyes when he came into pitch) or Joe Borowski this year with Cleveland.

My comment was about two folks on another blog who say we should not sign Howard, because Rico Brogna was a better first baseman.

These two constantly complain no matter about everything, no matter what is happening. They could be propositioned by a SI swimsuit model, and they would say they were too tall, or it was a turn off because she spoke English with an accent - hense they are Eeyores.

GM-Carson can be furious when Howard is "Phillies 1B man Dick Stuart - known as Dr. Strangeglove" (a suggestion for for the next Phillies Phlashback Phriday), but he gets out of the house enjoys sunshine, has positive things to say,and has girls who want to kiss him - and Corey, but it was just that one time - he had just broken up with that b*tch and he was really drunk.

SirAlden said...

GM-Carson is not an Eeyore.

SirAlden said...

Can someone tell me how Pirates lead off batter McLouth who walked, scored on a single by Sanchez (and received an RBI)?

There was no error on the play.

???

SirAlden said...

A Bear of very little brain is

Pooh-Charlie Manuel

Christopher Robin-Cole Hamels
Piglett - Abe Nunez

Roo (who runs all the time)- Shane Victorino

Kanga - not to worry mom - Pat Gillick

Owl - wise old bird Jamie Moyer

The Hefalump - big huge theatening contract - little effect (until recently) - Pat Burrell

Eeyore - was Mike Leiberthal the not so hidden club house cancer of past years.

BloodStripes said...

Phillies mashing the Buccos! We will win this series.

Meanwhile Brandon Webb is still rolling with the scoreless innings streak. Braves down by a run.

Bob D said...

Durbin - a fairly good game. He should be given another start.

Coste - just keeps hitting, what more can you say.

And the rest are hitting today the exception is Howard with 2 pop ups and 2 strike outs. Not to worry, he will still hit, should've sat against a tough lefty today.

Tigger is Bourn and Gopher is Iguchi. Montogomery is the great OZ oops wrong story.

Bob D said...

What is the record for most posts here? We are probably close to it now? Good comments today, I look forward to tommorow's post hopefully led off with a picture of Ed Wade in a parachute.

GM-Carson said...

10 Spot for the good guys! Nice to season the offense come alive. Too bad Ryan Howard didn't join in the hit parade tonight.

JD Durbin is better than Eaton, at least for now and probably the rest of the season.

Fat Mike Zagurski is not ready for the majors...send him down before he blows another game.

Jacobin said...

I think the most posts on here was opening day, but I could be wrong (at least opening day is the most posts I remember).

How about Pat Burrell tonight? 3-3 and a walk. Three runs driven in and two scored. A home run for his 1,000 hit. The guy deserved all the disdain he got earlier this season as he threatened to fall below .200, but other than a few games he's been unreal during the second half of this season. I hope he keeps it up; I never enjoyed bitching about Burrell, and it's nice to get to say some positive things about him.

And it was good to see the bats come alive against the AA squad in Pittsburgh. Hopefully we can keep it going when we get out of that town and face a major league team.

BloodStripes said...

Phils doing what it takes. Keep it goin' boys!

GM-Carson said...

I know most of us agree Charlie Manuel is a moron, but I had to believe it's difficult for him to set Howard down for a game with Utley and Vic both out of the lineup. It's all well and good to say Howard needs a breather, because he does, but it's hard to justify taking him out of the lineup and replacing him with Wes Helms at this point in the season with key offensive cogs missing.

Record for comments in a day, indeed was opening day of this year with 121.

A BeerLeaguer commenter had this to say about Howard- "Howards doing better tonight. Last night he was 0-4, 3 SO. Tonight he's 0-4 with only 2 SO. I think he's coming around."...now that's just quality humor.
