Mock Meat

The Phillies usually only get national attention for losing (i.e. 1st sports franchise to 10,000 losses), but the place they play at is getting exposure for winning. The Brick Cit House has won P.E.T.A.'s "Most Vegetarian-Friendly Ballpark in North America". Here's the reason Citizens Bank Park was deemed worthy of such honor, "Animal-friendly baseball fans can eat themselves silly in the City of Brotherly Love, enjoying the league's best selection of mock meats. A vegan hot dog and flame-grilled Gardenburger were added in past seasons, and now Citizens Bank Park is offering a genuine Philly mock-steak sandwich that's getting rave reviews for its great taste, and it has none of the cholesterol of "the original" to boot!"

This is fresh off the heels of winning the Food Network's "2007 Best Ballpark Eats Award." To be honest, I had no idea, nor did I care, that the Cit was veggie friendly, unless you consider Chickie'n'Pete's crab fries of that nature. Anyway, I'm a bit concerned with this "mock meat" they speak of. I've had scrapple, some scary hot dogs, and imitation crab meat in my life so I know what can fall under the realm of meat, but what in the world is "mock meat"? I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't care to find out.

Phillies Crime Crew:
Former Phillies keep making the news for criminal acts, this time it was Jose Offerman. Another former Phillie was involved in the altercation- Matt Beech. During an Independent League game Beech of Bridgeport hit Offerman of Long Island with a pitch and Jose charged the mound with bat in hand and decided to hit Beech since he didn't get the opportunity to hit the ball. Offerman was arrested, as he smacked Beech in the hands and also struck a blow to the head of the catcher...freakin' idiot! It's good to see Jose can still hit something though, because he didn't hit crap for the Phils in '05.

Game Notes:
*Thank you Russell Branyan. The Phils offense was asleep all night, and was wasting a nicely pitched game by Kyle Lohse and crew, until the the newest Phillie came to the plate in the 8th as a pinch-hitter and went rock-em-sock-em on a John Rauch pitch for a 2-run lead-taking bomb.

*I know I shouldn't praise players on this blog, because it always seems to back fire, but I do want to say the bullpen is much improved lately. 6-Finger-Ant has done a decent job all season, JC Romero has slotted into the left-handed reliever role well, Jose Mesa has been a big surprise, Tom Gordon is looking better, and Brett Myers is filthy in the 9th.

*The only thing more disgusting than Tony Bautista's batting stance is the fact that he only has 2 extra-base hits on the season, both doubles coming at the hands of Phillies pitchers...c'mon now!

i think you owe russell branyan and pat gillick an apology for all the bad things you said about them concerning branyan's arrival to this club.

setback for victorino rehab??

Apology my rear-end! I'll give him props for his hit, but it may be his only hit. Hope I'm wrong, but his career average, especially for pinch-hitting, suggests otherwise.

Corey- I thought you would enjoy that PETA pic...yeah buddy!

*Werth has done a decent job filling in for Vic, but we NEED him back!

As a vegan, I always have to eat ahead of going to a game. Not so with the Phillies. The veggie dogs are actually not bad. By not bad, I mean that eating two will give a perfect "I'm enjoying the national pastime (almost) the way it's supposed to be enjoyed." Three? Yeah, that's an entirely different feeling.

I don't know how you vegans do it...the taste of grilled hamburger or medium-rare steak is too much for me to live without.

My wife (a vegetarian) read that article last week and DEMANDED seats for the game on Saturday. Usually she needs to be dragged kicking and screaming. Anyway, Rick's Steaks is the only joint at CBP with this infamous Veggie Steak, so after our 45-minute wait I can tell you that she thoroughly enjoyed the fake steak, to the point that she remarked "this is the greatest veggie food I've ever had."

Translation: this shredded newspaper and soy creation is the least offensive item to cross my palate in 4 years.

Side note: the freebie team cards that they gave away proved quite bountiful... my wife and I each won retro jerseys - I got a '93 Mitch Williams, she got a Larry Andersen. Apparently there were only 100 given out... So, I got that goin' for me.

I wouldn't be able to do it either. The smell of bacon coming from the kitchen in the morning is enough to get me out of bed everytime. Nothing can beat a true ballpark dog though. Dollar Dog Day is like heaven on earth.

That shot by Branyan just landed I think. The Nats bullpen, really let a nice outing by the starter go to waste.

Howard has not been looking good at the plate lately, he seems really susceptable to breaking balls down in the zone and fast balls away. Which I've noticed is exactly how he's been pitched the past four or so games. Breaking ball down and in (swing and a miss), fast ball away (he'll take that usually for a strike), breaking ball down and in for the swinging strikeout.

I would totally give up bacon for that Asian girl, at least while she's with me. Think she'd be ok with Bacon Salt?

My girlfriend is a vegetarian...and a yankees fan. So I will have to take her to a game soon to hopefully change one of those feelings.

1st off- I'm ordering me some of that bacon salt. That's gotta be the fattest thing I've ever heard.

Secondly- I never knew there were so many vegetarians out there...they walk/blog amongst us! I guess you guys/gals are alright in my book...more meat for me!

Jacobin said...

Oh my God, a Skeeter sighting. Now we've had about as many of those as wins with three runs or less over the last two months!

i've had a veggie cheesesteak before, one of the best i've ever had was at this little bar in old city, it was really good actually. i'm not vegetarian but i enjoy a lot of the food.

i'm a vegitarian and i'm happy to hear that my favorite team has a stadium that is so veggie friendly!! i also used to flip shits over salami and bacon but i've changed i feel great about it.

"mock meat" is just soy protein, and i've accepted it for its own merits, and i no longer compare it to real meat. it's like: if you can accept that branyan and burrell will only walk, strike out or homer, they're great!

i don't eat poultry, beef or pork anymore, but i would probably eat this....

Seriously, I had no idea that so many of the readers of this blog are vegans or close with someone who is. I guess my Thanksgiving comment of "Eat some turkey you commi-bastards!" didn't go over so well. I was joking though, as most of you know that is my nature

furiousball, I just bought the regular and pepper bacon versions of Bacon Salt. Bacon is the unofficial official food product of the Ladies..., so I thank you for bringing this fine product to our attention.

I love meat, but sometimes I'll have a veggie burger for variety (or when I'm feeling too gluttonous).

Oh, I'm sorry, this is a Phillies blog? My mistake. I'll be down at RFK tomorrow to cheer on my boy Cole.

Carson, more than half of the conversations I have with my girlfriend are about me trying to get her to eat some meat. And I am not trying to make a sexual pun here haha.

And hello Jacobin...how has life been?

all the veggie kids love this blog. i guess figures now how the cit has the best vegetarian food seeing as a lot of their fans are.

carson -- i don't mind jokes about meat. i'm a vegitarian for health and financial reasons, but i really don't have a problem with the industry.

i take care of wild birds for a living and that means more mouse and rat meat pass through my hands every day than a hundred random humans would have in their entire lifetimes. i've euthanized millions of the little fuckers, but whatever.

Adam Eaton has been placed on the DL with a "inflamed shoulder". This just goes to show that a team can "find" something "wrong" with any player they want to, so that they can DL them rather than outright release them. This "injury" is much along the lines of the Rod Barajas one. Hopefully some rest on the DL does Eaton well both physically and mentally because we have the turd-torpedo for 2 more seasons.

Meanwhile, Fat Mike Zagurski has been recalled to take Eaton's roster space.

This also means JD Durbin is likely to take Eaton's spot in the rotation on Friday.

Today's comment section has been very enlightening. I've been surprised by the vegan support on this blog and now come to find out Benjah euthanizes rodents...nice!

While I respect that many people have chosen to forgo meat from their diet, I continue to be an omnivore. Mmmm... nothing wrong with a good steak every now and then. And I love seafood, though I guess for many people that exists in a quasi area.

How's life? Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da... you know? I missed Skeeter (and his blog), just had to state my shock at seeing his name turn up again!

Hey, I'd love to swap links. I'm brand new so I don't have much readership yet but I'm all for supporting my fellow baseball bloggers. I'm putting a link up to your site right now.

But how long can we last without Chase, Victorino, and Bourn? Amazing, that they've done this well for this long, to tell you the truth.

GM-Carson said...

I know this probably isn't a popular view, but Ryan Howard is a dumb baseball player. The only thing he does well is slug. I'm not trying to diminish his slugging ability, as I'm very glad he's wearing a Phils uniform and clobbering pitches. However, his defense is really bad. He can't start a double play, as he won't even throw to 2nd base anymore out of fear of throwing it away. That play tonight was horrible! He looked at 2nd (had plenty of time) then decided to go to 1st instead, but pump faked like 3 times and all runners ended up being safe (Schnieder awarded a gift infield single).

Now his defense alone doesn't make him a "dumb" player. He continues to swing at pitcher far out of the strike zone and take called strikes on the outer half of the plate...make some adjustments!

His only game plan seems to be- lets see if I can go yard...all other facets of his game are lacking.

GM-Carson said...

Why the hell can't we hit the Nationals' pitching?!?!?! They are not a good team, so what the hell is our problem?!?!?! C'mon already...

GM-Carson said...

This game sucks so far. Phils only run coming on a Werth homer, rest of the offense is sleeping for the 2nd game in a row. Score is 4-1, with 2 of those runs coming in the 2nd when the ump blew a call and Howard played shitty defense...why do the Phils do this?

GM-Carson said...

John Ennis (AAA Ottawa) cruised through 7 innings of no hit ball against Pawtucket. To start the 8th, they turned the ball over to Geoff Geary who managed to get one out before blowing the "no-no". Congratulations Gas Can!

GM-Carson said...

As "great" as this offense is, they suck with the bases loaded. Bases loaded with no outs in the 7th and Coste gets an rbi single, but then Branyan and Rollins strikeout. You need to at least hit a sac fly or something...bull shit!

furiousBall said...

I can't believe that crap. Two K's with the bases loaded. Argh.

GM-Carson said...

The Phils are striking out all over the place tonight (11 so far). The bad Pat Burrell has returned. Since moving to the 3 hole he's cold mostly cold. The entire offense is cold, well cold is being nice, frigid is a better description.

GM-Carson said...

Dobbs uppercut is getting worse with every at bat. I like him as a bench player and he's done a lot of good things for us, but seriously, his swing goes almost directly upwards anymore...disgusting.

5 runs in 2 games against the gNats...disgusting.

Jacobin said...

Highest scoring offense in the National League looks like crap against the frigg'n Washington Nationals. What the hell has been going on the last two games? We need to break out of the funk tomorrow!
