Bipolar

What would you like to hear first, the good or the bad news? Well, since I just popped my daily dosage of Prozac, I'll hit you up with some cheerful information.

Joyful Junk:
*Our starting outfield is Pat "P.I.M.P." Burrell in LF, Aaron "Fence-Face" Rowand in CF, and Shane "Tsunami" Victorino in RF. Jayson Werth is a shoe-in to be the 4th outfielder with Karim Garcia, Gregg Dobbs, and Michael Bourn battling for that last spot. When spring training first began I actually made a case for Chris Roberson to make the squad because of his defensive skills and speed on the base paths. It didn't take long for the Phils to figure out Roberson can't hit, but guess who can hit that also has the same positive attributes as him...Bourn. Bourn is hitting .341 this spring and just notched his 6th stolen base last night. I want Greg Dobbs on the bench because he can play corner infield, but Bourn can play CF and his speed is amazing. I bet you thought I was going to make a lame "Bourne Identity" quip...crap, I just did.
*Victorino, Utley, and Helms have been swinging hot sticks in the Grapefruit League and I expect this success to carry straight into the real season...because we all know the importance of spring stats by now.
*Eude Brito had his 2nd consecutive successful outing. He could be the useful longman in the bullpen we need. Why am I now mysteriously hungry for some Taco Bell?
*Rule 5 pick, Jim Ed Warden, has settled down recently and may actually land in the 'pen. I'm rooting for this guy because his name is so hick-ish that it will supply me with fuel for this blog.
*Tom Gordon pitched without discomfort, which is an accomplishment for the elderly reliever. Somebody please get this man some Geritol.
*Jon Lieber has been sentenced to the bullpen, more on this on the flip-side.

Depressing Daggers:
*Any time you trade complete crap, in this case the Headcase known as Gavin Floyd, for a proven winner and workhorse, Freddy Garcia, you have to suspect something is fishy. Phillies fans were harshly smacked in the kisser with that reality yesterday as Freddy Garcia was pulled from his start early due to tightness in his right bicep. Oh Sugar-Snaps!
*Jon Lieber is back in the starting rotation. Donut-Eater, banished to the bullpen for all of 3 hours, was summoned back into the starting 5 because of the injury to Garcia. Hopefully Lieber can churn out 2 or 3 quality starts until Freddy is ready (ha, that rhymed) in turn increasing his trade value.
*Like an infectious S.T.D. (just ask Burrell), once the injury bug bites one player more are to come as the disease spreads. Carlos Ruiz is also banged up with a sore right shoulder and Chris "East-vs-West" Coste is nursing a hammy.

Dare I say..."Thank God we have Jon Lieber." Never thought I'd say that.

Oh, also...you don't have a title for this post. Not sure if you knew that. Come on Carson, pick up your game.

I did have a title, but something went wrong went I went to publish it and I ended up having to redo over half of it...pissed me off. The title must have gotten deleted too.

I'm always suspect of trades when the talent is that far off balanced, even when they make the "last year of contract" argument.

Now I'm not so happy about the rotation all of the sudden.

Garcia may not miss much at all. Unfortunately for Bourn he will likely start at AAA since they want him to play everyday and he would not if he stayed as the 5th OF. Dobbs better use that catching glove soon this team may just need him. Ruiz may not be available to start the season. And Coste may start in AAA as well. Bullpen looks like a mess, but it should straighten out soon.

Hopefully Garcia's injury is nothing and he's ok for the regular season. At this point though, I'd almost rather have Jon "Dr. Donut" Lieber in the rotation then Freddy "Pitch like Shit" Garcia there. Boy has he crapped the bed in spring training. At least Myers, Moyer and Lieber have been good thus far.

Freddy's velocity has been down all spring to near Moyer level. That in and of itself suggests he was/is not healthy.

Yesterday Los mentioned Mitch Williams being hated in Philly, and I commented back that I still like him.

Today is Buster Olney's blog-"• The reason why Mitch Williams is loved in Philly, writes Sam Donnellon, is because he never shirked responsibility for the Joe Carter homer."

Jamie Moyer just struck out the side in the first, punching out Cora, Youkilis, and Big Pappi.

GM-Carson said...

Thank you for some optimism McD.

We need BloodStripes up in here with a victory cry.

McD said...

Sorry for my premature optimism. Moyer has been tagged for 4 runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The pitching just seems to get worse by the day!

Simply put- this all SUCKS!!!

The Phillies are reporting their be cautious with Garcia and Ruiz, and in fact their injuries aren't serious at all. Sure, and pigs fly from Corey's ass. Wait, pigs do fly outta Corey's ass?!

After hearing about the precautionary actions taken on Freddy Garcia and his right biceps tendon, I have to say the Phightins may not want to trade Jon Leiber too quickly.

Having Leiber who has a wealth of starting rotation experrience may be a good asset for the Phils, he can come out of the bullpen and spot start and be as effective as anyone in that role. I would have to caution the front office in saying that although trading Leiber for a solid younger reliever may be an enticing option, I feel that holding on to him at least until they are sure about Garcia would be a move that they may be thankful for once the season starts.

The Phils just tied the Sox 4-4. Nothing sweeter than a spring training tie!

Honestly, I wish Jon Lieber was in our rotation and we would have never signed Adam Eaton, but I'm not the GM.

Tie ball games- I hate that...dammit I can't wait until the games mean something. Extra innings in the spring is a joke. Why bother?

GM-Carson said...

Burrell is looking like shit this spring, lets not sugarcoat it.

Lieber pitched well today- good news!

Joe Bisenius pitched 3 scoreless inning of relief, most likely locking up a spot in the bullpen.

Carson- I think the reason Eaton was brought on for 3 years is that otherwise, after this season, the Phillies would only have 3 starters
guaranteed to be on the team in 2008 (Myers, Cole and Moyer) and it would be too costly to acquire 2 pitchers on the FA market.

We are 10 days from the start of the season ... can't this be one of the positives?

I read the Inquirer article on Bourne today ... He sounds like he was "Bourne" to be a starting outfielder for the Phils .. ba-da-bing.

GM-Carson said...

Eaton was also brought in before Gillick knew he could get Freddy Garcia. I do cut Gillick some slack for signing Eaton, but I'd rather have Lieber in the rotation then him. There were plenty of relievers on the market this offseason that Gillick didn't pony up enough bucks for...I really wanted Chad Bradford for example.

Bradford would have been a very good pickup.
