Spew

From the elegant words of Garth's mouth from Wayne's World- "If you're going to spew, spew into this."

Why may you be feeling a bit queasy? Pat Gillick just signed Karim Garcia to a minor league contract. I know I'm making a bigger deal out of this than need be, or am I? Look at our bench "potential" for next season...it's an utter crapfest: Chris Coste, Jayson Werth, Abe Nunez, Chris Roberson, Danny Sandoval, and Karim Garcia...wow, that's inspiring! Coste is decent, but he only has 1 year under his belt and is getting the shaft from the Phils brass so far this offseason. Werth hasn't played in a season and a half, so who knows what we'll get outta him. Nunez sucks, Roberson sucks, and Sandoval sucks, plain and simple. Garcia sucked in America, he sucked in Japan, hell he'd suck in Scandinavia if given the chance. I've been trying to stay optimistic this offseason, but the lack of quality arms for the bullpen and the total duds that may fill out the bench next season leave me felling like I might just need the bucket to spill my breakfast into.

The starting lineup and starting rotation is solid.

The relief corps is shaky but I expect 1 or 2 of those guys will step up this year.

The bench seems to be in worse shape. The best bench players will be the backup catchers Coste and Ruiz/Barajas. Werth will probably prove his worth as a valuable bench player but at this time remains as a question mark. That is why they should not count on Garcia (Karim not Freddy or Anderson) since he is a question mark himself. By adding question mark to the bench they are increasing the chance of a problem during the year. Abraham 0 Nunez has the appropiate middle initial '0' and Sandoval is his younger clone. Not good for backup IF. Don't fret just yet, there may still be a couple of moves yet to happen prior to the start of spring training.

I need to hold out hope that Gillick can spin Lieber into a nice bullpen arm and possible bench player. Hey, a man can dream.

i taking the other side. garcia has put up some nice numbers in japan and was fairly productive for the yanks a few years ago (he even was a starter). i think he may surprise this year and be valuable off the bench. as you said carson, a man can dream

Dane- as always, thanks for the optimism. And I'm not rooting against Karim Garcia, I hope he does well, I just don't think he will.

Overall, the team is better. The rotation may be the best in the NL, and the lineup is decent...no lineup is perfect unless you have Yankee/Met type money. However, this bullpen is in shambles and needs improved pronto!

I think Karim Garcia is a good signing... one thing comes to my mind when I see him. He looks tough. Like if there's a bench clearing brawl, I'm pretty glad he's on my team. Thats all I got as far as upside, but I will be optimistic and say maybe Gillick knows something we don't. Maybe he knows that Karim like donuts too, and he gets to the clubhouse earlier then Lieber and will eat them all up before Lieber gets there, hence producing a more in shape Lieber who will pitch lights out in spring training and then we'll be able to trade him and get some good talent in return. (Hows that for dreaming?)

GoDuke- that was ridiculous dreaming, thanks for sharing!

Personally I want Rick White back as our designated brawler.

F Rick White. I'd take a 42 year old Pete Incaviglia back today as my designated bench brawler. No one was as imposing as Inky. Thats a roster spot well spent.

Inky would be good, but nowhere near as tough as Dave Hollins. That man was intense and just let pitches hit him on occasion. Until the one time he snapped and beat the hell out of Bob Scanlan. As bad as Scanlan was in the Phils' system, that was an added bonus.

The bullpen won't be needed because we all know that the rotation will pitch a complete game every night...problem solved.

I am underwhelmed by this pickup. But, at least he has the name Karim ... and that's kind of a cool name, I guess.

I'm just pissed because now when someone says 'Garcia', I won't know what one they are talking about. Freddy or Karim.

Dumbass Gillick signing two Garcias in one offseason. Doesn't he know that shit is confusing!?!?!?!

Bob D said...

Skeeter, make that 3 Garcias - he signed minor leaguer pitcher Anderson Garcia earlier in the week as a possible bullpen arm.
Maria, you said it best complete games.
The bench is better than last year, then bullpen is yet to be decided. Too many 'ifs'

It's hard not to have a better bench then last season when we started the year with Alex "Forced Into Retirement" Gonzalez and Sal "Fu Manchu" Fasano were on the bench. Still have that chump No-Hit Nunez though unfortunately.

Innerstate Love Song- Phils picked up a piece off the Pirates scrap heap yesterday and took pitcher Landon Jacobsen into the system. Way to keep it in the family.
