Bench Brawl

The Phillies roster seems to be set heading into spring training and that means competition for 2 bench spots. I figure the Phils will carry 11 pitchers, 8 regulars for the field, and Nunez, Werth, Coste, and Ruiz which are pretty much assured bench spots and that brings the roster total up to 23. That leads me to the question: Who should the remaining 2 bench spots go to?

Benchwarmers:
1. Chris Roberson- can play all 3 outfield positions well defensively and has good speed which lends well to pinch-running. The fact that he can't hit does not escape me though.
2. Karim Garcia- has been all over baseball during his career, including Japan, and could be a decent pinch-hitter with ok power, but I'm just not that high on this guy.
3. Randal Simon- swings at anything and makes contact at a pretty decent clip, which is what you want from a pinch-hitter. Could also be used to beat up the opposing teams' mascot, but put him in the field and you're asking for trouble.
4. Danny Sandoval- referred to as a no-talent ass-clown on this site for good reason.
5. Greg Dobbs- fresh off the waiver wire from Gillick's love-fling Seattle. Can play corner infield and outfield in a pinch.

Who should be on the bench? (Pick 2)
Chris Roberson
Karim Garcia
Randal Simon
Danny Sandoval
Greg Dobbs

I actually picked Roberson because of his pinch-running ability. I like Dobbs versatility as well with the ability to play corner infield and corner outfield if necessary. Garcia's "power" is intriguing, but I shy away from him.

Rumor- Brett Myers for Alex Rios....ahhhh NO!!!

All these Brett Myers rumors have to be crap... theres just no way you deal your best pitcher. Unless Ed Wade got back in the organization and is pulling the strings.

Picked Roberson and Garcia. They need OF and have enough for 1B and 3B. It will be a long spring so that will likely change. There are still 2 roster spots open and a decent chance that Nixon could end up a Philly. Other teams vying for him include Pirates(more playing time) and Red Sox (home and only if Drew is terminated)

Simon was enticing as a mascot killer but the Phanatic seems to handle that job well.

Myers traded? Not likely the rumor from what I understand is mostly from the Jays side and not the Phils wishes.

I'd still like to see Trot Nixon added to the Phils roster, but money looks tight and Gillick said the roster is pretty much set.

i went roberson-simon. need to have someone that can run off the bench. simon is fat, and you gotta have a fat guy in the club house that pounds weiners

Almost lunchtime and not one vote for Sandoval...I can't stand him!

Buccos signed Nick Green to a minor league deal. The guy is totally worthless.

Read a rumor that Brian Lawence is close to signing with the Phils...must have been a misprint because it makes absolutely no sense.

I didn't vote because you didnt put " dear gawd help us" on the ballot. Man, maybe I'm having a post-Eagles crank fit, but I do not like the Phils OF, bench or BP as it stands as of this writing.

Calm down buddy. The bench does have Werth, Ruiz, and Coste which are all adequate benchwarmers. Nunez is there for defense, and the other 2 spots, which the poll was designed for, are up for grabs. It's not a good bench, but it's not horrible either. I agree the bullpen is weak, very weak. I like Burrell in the outfield, and the combo of Rowand and Victorino are going to cover a lot of groud defensively and will be ok on offense. What we really need is a setup man like an Otsuka, Linebrink, or someone like that. Ryan Madson won't get it done.

Well.. I do *really* like the rotation, so I'll stop being pissy and see what happens by the time the season starts. I voted for Roberson as the Phils do need one speedy guy to pinch-run and do Burrell gimp duty.

I also chose Roberson for his speed and pinch running ability. He is young and could do with some big league time. His batting may well improve with it. I also voted Simon for his power and bench brawl strength. No-one will mess with the sausage basher when there's a rumble on. I like the way he can look intimidating.

Although I like the reports on this Dobbs fella. Seems to be a decent pickup and looks like he will score a bench spot.

ChuckM- it's ok to be "pissy" bro, I'm all for venting frustrating. I was just playing devil's adovacate in my earlier comment.

BloodStripes- Roberson will never hit unless his body is taken over by aliens and is implanted with an actual "stroke" that is conducive to hitting.

Lawrence to sign w/ Phils??? Not unless a trade is imminent.

Dobbs sounds like an upgrade over Sandoval - so a good pickup.

Roberson can hit maybe 330/10/35 as a back up while Pat hits 295/47/145

Simon can also wear the Phanatic suit while on the bench and beat up other mascots. He may even decide to outcome of the sausage races around the Brewer's stadium.

Randal Simon is a funny player and he has fun. He's a great guy to have down in Triple A in case of emergency and to keep the youngins loose.

The Brian Lawrence to Phils rumor was on Foxsports.com by Ben Maller...so who knows?

About damn time! The Buccos acquired the left-handed thump they needed in the form of 1st baseman Adam LaRoche for Mike Gonzalez.

LaRoche will fit in nicely with Pittsburgh, and give a much needed power boost to the anemic offense.

The Braves now have an awesome bullpen, but their offense is severely lacking with Kelly Johnson slated in at 1st and Martin Prado at 2nd...not exactly household names.

Nearly 6 pm, with 29 votes, and still no love for Danny Sandoval...what a pity.

*I still think BloodStripes is his 3rd cousin.

Hypothetical - let's say that the Bonds/Giants deal falls through ... and the Phils somehow signed him ... how long would it take the fans to get on him so bad that he either quits or terminates himself?

Can I vote for Jon Lovitz's robot from "Benchwarmers" instead of any of those chumps in the poll?

BloodStripes said...

I can see the headline now.... Roberson recieves alien stroke probe. Says he feels like a new man.

Sandoval is no relation to this far flung Aussie. No way I look like that no talent ass-clown.

GM-Carson said...

Thursday morning 6 am and not a single vote for Sandoval from 37 voters...wow, that's bad.

Looks like most people do agree that Roberson should get one of the 2 remaining bench spots, and I'm guessing for his speed.

GM-Carson said...

Just read on Phillies.com that the team will probably go with a 12 man pitching staff leaving only 1 bench spot open. I don't see the need for 12 pitchers with the type of rotation we have. Unless of course Manuel wants Castro in the pen so he can just sit there and waste away.

Sal "Fu Manchu" Fasano has landed a minor league deal with Toronto.
