Say Hello To My Little Friend

Although you might not agree with all the additions Pat Gillick has made to the Phillies, you can't deny that he isn't trying to be creative in building a winner. Freddy Garcia, Wes Helms, Jayson Werth, Rod Barajas, Adam Eaton, and some Rule 5 guys will all be looked upon to help the Phils in 2007. Many people, including myself, are still scared about the dicey situation of the bullpen, as it has more leaks and is as stinky as a three day old Pampers diaper. Patty G still has Fatty Lieber in the corner pocket to deal for a reliever if he so chooses. But I think we're overlooking who could be a vital member of the bullpen that is already in our system. Yep, none other than the Legend & Lore of Fabio Castro!

Sure we could go sign some has-been bullpenner off the MLB scrap heap (Brian Meadows- yuck!), or we could go with youth that has a bit of a following here at WSBGM's. See, Fabio Castro came to the Phils in a surprise trade by Gillick, and then he was seldom used. In fact, with the Rangers and Phillies last season, Castro only pitched 31.2 innings. He was damn good in those innings though, with a 2.27 ERA and .98 WHIP. Tell me why Manuel didn't use him more and why we're not considering him as a viable candidate for next season's bullpen? That's right the talk in Philly is that Castro will go to Ottawa and become a starter. Just doesn't make sense to me. First off, the guy has only been a reliever in the minors and has an ERA of 2.41 in 4 minor league seasons with a strikeout per inning...don't mess with success. Second, he's only 5'7", hence the "say hello to my little friend", and that doesn't bode well for a pitcher at all especially in a starting capacity. Therefore, I say leave him in the role he knows best- reliever, and a promising one at that. So let my boy Fabio Castro come out firing from the bullpen like Tony Montana in Scarface.

Christmas was very kind to me as I spent quality time with the family, ate plenty of good food, and got some great gifts- best of all being XM Radio. I got both the car and home kit- kick ass!

Just got back from the doctor and I now am officially without cast. My wrist is all healed up...basically. I still do have a small gap at one end of the fracture that will never fully heal without surgery, and I really don't want to go that route, so I'll just do the rehab exercises instead. It's a belated gift to get the cast off, but a gift nonetheless.

Tell the truth, Santa cut off the cast while you were asleep. Corey probably got coal after yesterdays post.

Now the bullpen. I hear the same with Castro going to AAA as a starter with an outside shot for the bullpen with the Phils. What is set is Gordon, Madson, Geary, and Smith. Not bad with these 4. I expect Madson to dramtically improve in a set role.

In the mix currently is Brito (longman potential), Condrey, and Sanches. These 3 can hold thier own, but are not considered high ceiling prosects. Two sleepers likely destined for the minors are Yoel Hernandez and Zack Sergovia. Hernandez got hurt last year but was headed for the majors with the ability to close in the future, lets hope that he hasn't hurt those chances. Sergovia is the closest of a number of top arms in the system. He is a starter but we saw last year where teams used top prospects in the pen (Boston's Pappleborn). If he makes the team watch him quick establish himself as setup man - IF given the oppurtunity by Manual (he tends to live and die by the veterans).

2 rule five guys Jim Ed Warden and Alfredo Simon will alos battle for spots in the pen. Simon throws in the upper 90's with control problems. He could be a closer if he straightens that out. The guy with 3 names Warden/Ed/Jim is a Chad Bradford type of sidearmer who could be very successful as being a different look for most hitters. I expect 1 of these guys sticking with the team.

I still expect at some point another reliever being brought in and if no trade made then expect Leiber / Eaton battle for 5th SP or RP.

I know some people have suggested keeping Lieber, but I just don't see him as a reliever. We signed Eaton for the rotation for 3 years, so he needs to be in the rotation. He's making 8 mil, that's too much to not pitch in the rotation. Lieber still should bring us a setup man eventually, the rest of the starters just need to get off the market first.

Why not put coste in the bullpen? The guy deserves a spot somewhere.

And I got Sirius Radio...fight me

GM-Carson said...

The only reason I wanted XM radio was for all the MLB games. I don't give a crap about Howard Stern and I heard the music is pretty much a toss-up.

i have sirius too, and the music is better. a lot of XM music stations have commercials...fuck that.

also, i've been meaning to ask. whhy are the GMs on this site so in love with trot nixon??

glad to hear you got the cast off....maybe you wont have so many unfortunate typos

"whhy are the GMs on this site so in love with trot nixon?" - have i ever said anything nice about trot nixon? trot nixon is a douche. don't lump me in with that christmas-loving, ladder-falling, gif-for-him buying H-mo carson.

LOL!! Man this place makes me laugh. Always a good running conversation of wise cracks.

Glad the arm is better mate.

I was thinking of Fabio this morning as well DQ. A move towards youth is a good move IMO. The White Sox and Tigers have benefited from it, not to forget our way back when Whiz Kids. Castro should be given every chance to make the pen this year. Let him rip. The Phillie coaches obviously like him though. He has potential. I hope confidence in him remains for the long term b/c I certainly am a Phan.

Go, our little friend go!!!

GM-Carson said...

i say send castro to AAA to become a 6th/7th starter. what good is he in the bullpen? young lefthanded relief pitchers with sub-3 era's are a dime-a-dozen...

It would be awesome to see him turn in to a little ace

BenJah said...

corey - thanks for your backup on fruit nixon, but i gotta say: castro is valuable in the pen b/c we need bullpen pitchers, simple as that

Carson, no mention of THE STREAK?? That was probably the biggest story on WSBGMs for the last third of the season or so!

And that was a terrific Xmas song yesterday btw corey, that and your anti-Trot Nixon rant today have definitely shown that you guys do not take days off here!

GM-Carson said...

Benjah- first off it's ironic that you make fun of my typos in a comment where you commit a typo "whhy". And to tell the truth, the reason I keep pushing Trot Nixon is for the following- fun name, decent player, but most of all...I know you don't like him.

Corey- how was the Isle of Long?

Das411- Castro's "streak" of scoreless innings was the shit. That's how he got the nickname "Legend & Lore".

"My Cousin" Lou Collier just signed a minor league deal with the Phils. My wife's maiden name is Collier. He played a few games with the Phils a couple seasons ago. Phils also inked Brent Abernathy. Both have played in the majors in the past and will add depth in Ottawa. Gillick also inked 2 minor league pitchers for fillers within the organization.
