Rock On With Your Bad Self

Let me get this straight, Patty G got a solid MLB starting pitcher for two unproven "prospects"? Now calling the headcase known as Gavin Floyd a prospect is a stretch, but everybody would agree Gio Gonzalez is in fact a top-tier prospect. Thing is, he's not a proven commodity and he could end up being like top-notch Pirates closer Mike Gonzalez or bottom-feeder journey man Geremi Gonzalez. I'm not upset about what we gave up, I'm excited about what we got...actually I'm joyous that we rid ourselves of Floyd, but I'm a bit sad to see Gio leave. Regardless, we got ourselves one hell of a starting rotation now- Myers, Hamels, Garcia, Moyer, and Eaton. That donut-eatin-sonna-bitch Lieber is out the door for the best offer. Garcia is good too, I don't see the concern with people. Sure he had a 4.54 ERA last year, but his WHIP was a nice and tidy 1.28, and this was while pitching in the hitter friendly AL, so I think we'll see a return ERA around his career mark of 4. He is also almost a lock to pitch 200 innings, just like Moyer, meaning less wear and tear on the bullpen. He's also had limited success at the plate which can only be an added bonus. Speaking of added bonus, he looks like the Rock (a.k.a. Dwayne Johnson).

So what else does Gillick have in the works? I've been reading many rumors as to the Phils getting Ryan Church, Kevin Mench, Brad Wilkerson, Geoff Jenkins, Derrick Turnbow, Jose Capellan, Akinori Otsuka, Octavio Dotel, and Rod Barajas. Most of those players could help the Phils in some capacity. I haven't been this excited about a trade since we obtained the rat Billy Wagner. Gillick is in a position of strength now, as he has surplus starting pitching. Lieber is going to be a hot name being linked to various rumors and I believe Gillick will swing a deal for an outfielder and some relief help. Then he'll turn around and deal Rowand for more relief help and when everything shakes out the man is going to look like a genius, even if Charlie Manuel looks like a R-Tard.

isn't that jeltz playing "business lebron" in the lebron commercials?

I do like the Garcia trade. We lose Floyd which IMHO is a good thing. Garcia is a workhorse and will take pressure off the bullpen.

just read a Lieber to Houston rumor where the Phils would get one of the Astros relievers and possibly more. Brad Lidge?

I'm happy as a pig in shit with this Garcia trade!

Proof that many of the posters on PhilliesPhansPhorum are nerdy dungeon and dragons players living in their parents' basement- they think the fan groups are stupid, think nick names are stupid, and oh yeah, they jack-off to stats! freakin h-mo's!

great trade, but is it short sighted?? gio is a decent prospect, and is cheap, and garcia is a free agent after this year and could be pricey to keep.

still, good move for this year.

GM-Carson said...

Gio and Floyd are cheap but wouldn't have helped the Phils this coming season and Garcia will. So short-sighted? Yeah maybe, but I like a lot.

I'm anxious to see what Gillick turns Lieber and Rowand into...hopefully goodies.

It's a great trade. Garcia if smart will hit the market next winter. If Adam Eaton gets $8.5 million per year - what will he get?

It does end up being short sighted, but a trade worth the risk. By getting Garcia, Meyers and Hamels will pitch with less pressure on them next year. And with the surplus of pitchers, they will round out the roster.

I was reading philliesphans last night and was shocked with how pissed they all were. Someone said "This trade will cripple the phils for half a decade."

Are u kidding me? Half a decade? For one prospect who we just got a year ago! (note: i didnt call floyd a prospect...he reminds me more of satan)

I've basically come to realize that no matter what deal any GM makes here...people will complain.

2006 Opening Day Rotation- Lieber, Myers, Lidle, Madson, and Floyd

2007- Myers, Garcia, Hamels, Moyer, and Eaton

Hamels will get better, Myers will slightly progress most likely, Garcia and Moyer are far better than Lieber or Lidle, and Eaton is superior to Madson and Floyd. Basically, the starting pitching is significantly better.

The offense is about the same.

The bullpen is where we need work done pronto!

right because every stupid fan in this city thinks they know better when in fact they don't have any clue what they're talking about. i think this is probably gillick's best deal since hes gotten here.

GM-Carson said...

Skeeter- some of those dudes over at PhilliesPhans are dip-shits. Seriously they spank monkey over stats and worship unproven prospects. Gio might turn out to be awesome, and then sure the trade may suck a bit, but right now Gio ain't shit and Garcia is. Those pansies need to stop waxing poetic about VORP, win shares, and shit like that and actually enjoy the game.

5 years 55 million for Gil Meche from the Royals...this market is crazy. Burrell is no longer a rip-off comparitively speaking, and Lieber at 7.5 should be easy to deal.

skeeter said...

7.5 million cant even cover lieber's food budget

c'mon, admit it you enjoy dunkin' your donuts and krispin' your kremes too.

I am pleased with this trade and some (okay, many) of those PhilliesPhans frumps can blow me. I am relieved that *finally* the Phillies are consciously heading towards a pitching oriented team. I am so weary of starting pitchers that huff, puff and labor through 6 innings max and now the Phillies havbe a deep rotation where 6+ innings is routine, raher than a ceiling. I am anxious to see where the Lieber and Rowand shoes drop, but one thing for sure is that I want NO part of Derrick Turnblow.

GM-Carson said...

chuckm- Derrick Turnbow reminds me of Fraggle Rock for some perculiar reason. Every time I see his goofy face I break into the theme song "dance your cares away, worries for another day, let the music play...down on fraggle rock"

"Fraggle Rock" hahaha. Ya, looks like a dime-store indian or a 1970s wake-and-bake weedhead to me. That dude is a disaster. I dont believe in "sophomore slump" so I am presuming that NL batters ajusted to his motionless heat and killed him. In no way is that dude a 8th inning man/potential closer. I dont know if the Rowand for Akinori Otsuka rumor has traction, but I would tear off my clothes and run down the street screaming my lungs out if that goes down.

...screaming my lungs out with joy, that is....

the biggest questions marks with this deal is:

how good is gonzalez 2, 4, 5 yrs from now?
how expensive is garcia to keep?

definate upgrade on the field, and i would support this deal for the sole purpose of annoying the butt nuggets at PhilliesPhans.

Los said...

But what about after this season? Will the Phils try to sign him to a long-term deal?

TrekMedic251 said...

Ahh,..back in October, the TrekMedic gazed into his crystal (meth) ball and prophesied that Gavin Floyd would not be with the organization in 2007 and would end up being trade bait for someone (although methought it would be a replacement for Pat "Bat Glued to the Shoulder" Burrell.)

BloodStripes said...

Complaining about this deal is stupid. As Benjah points out its a definite upgrade. Why complain about that? I think Gillick will want to re-sign him for '08 and more if he continues his decent form. Its his plan to have a run at a championship over the next couple of years and Freddy is solid with post-season experience. Our rotation is now looking good and should compliment our killer offense.

das411 said...

And with (Burrell, Lieber, Rowand, etc) off the books after 07 why not try and extend Garcia? Either he pitches well and we lock him up, which we definitely will be able to afford, or we don't lock him up and get decent to good draft pick comp from whoever signs him, or he pitches badly and we offer him arb, *then* get a pick for him. It's win-freakin-win baby!!

Notice how those assclowns are complaining about a pitcher who put up a 17-9 in 200 AL innings last year. The thing about statheads is that as long as your lineup does not have 9 Albert Pujols's (or 9 2004 Barry Bonds's) and your rotation does not have...um...aw hell, I don't think there is a pitcher in the league those bungholes couldn't find something to complain about. So ignore them! And when we win the NL East next year and they are still bitching about Gio and Abreu being gone...dump beer on them, then ignore!

GM-Carson said...

My guess is that if Garcia gets off to a good start in spring training and early season, the Phils will start discussing an extension. I really think he'll be fine in the NL, even if he duplicates his #'s from last year that's an improvement over most of our rotation from last season.

Das411- Burrell is under contract through 2008 for 27 mil the next 2 seasons. But I absolutely agree with your insertion of how to handle those "bungholes"...they would complain about Gavin Floyd and Danny Sandoval for Johan Santana...ridiculous!

I hope Freddy rips through april to help the Phils to a good start and we lock him up for '08 early like you say Carson. I reckon he will do better in the NL as well. The MLB radio guys think the deal was good. Respected Phils bloggers think it is good. Just about everywhere you look its positive. I'm worried about some of the phorum boys. Bit strange. Too critical. No time to wait for prospects. We need to capitalize on last years good 2nd half showing. Our offense is screaming for pitching backup aand now we got some. Gotta be happy 'bout that.

BloodStripes said...

Besides, the Phils still have good pitching prospects. Floyd was doing nothing and had his chance in Philly and Gio wasn't all that hot last year. I think he is good but he is only one prospect out of a handful. Its not like he was our only one. There is still backup down on the farm.

I love my tractor!
