I'm a bit miffed this morning at the amount of negativity surrounding Gillick's flop of one turd-torpedo(Gavin Floyd) and one unproven minor league prospect (Gio Gonzalez) for a solid MLB starting pitcher (Freddy Garcia). Do you Phillies fans want to win next season? If so, Floyd and Gonzalez weren't going to help us accomplish that. However, Garcia will because he's better than most of the rotation we strolled out to the mound last season (Lidle, Lieber, Madson, Floyd, and Wolf). So I've got a message to send to the haters- SHUT THE HELL UP!
Gio Gonzalez could end up being a top of the rotation pitcher, or he could suck hind teat like former #1 pick Gavin Floyd. I would be upset if Gillick went out and started trading away all of our promising young players in the system, but this was merely one dude. What the hell is a prospect anyway? Because the player is a prospect you must keep in mind they have the prospect of sucking too. Prospects are so unpredictable, and I've searched my memory for some past Phils who never panned out: Mike Mimbs, Pat Combs, Gavin Floyd, Brandon Duckworth, Wayne Gomes, Mike Grace, Ryan Karp, Reggie Taylor, Ricky Jordan, Wendell Magee, and the list goes on and on. Now, there haven't been nothing but failures in the past because Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Brett Myers, Jimmy Rollins, Scott Rolen, Mike Lieberthal, Randy Wolf, Pat Burrell, and others have all recently come from the Phils system. My point is that prospects are never "can't miss", prospects are suspects. Therefore, I applaud Gillick for this trade.
On an uplifting note...Stacey's Mom has got it going on!
