Goodbye Alfonso...

...and I'm not talking Alfonso Ribeiro, cousin Carlton on The Fresh Prince. No, I'm talking about the other Alfonso. ESPN and FoxSports is reporting Alfonso Soriano has signed an 8-year, $136 million dollar contract with the Chicago Cubs.

My math sucks, but that is about $17 mil per year. Okay, that is fine. But 8 years is a butt-load of years, especially given this assessment from ESPNInsider Keith Law, "Soriano will turn 31 in January, so he's close to the end of his peak offensive years, and it's hard to ignore his .316 OBP in the previous two seasons."

The Cubs have been some greedy little pimps this offseason. They are snatching up all the good "tricks." A-Ram, A-Sor, K-Wood...even M-DeRos. I bet Jim Hendry walks around the Winter Meetings with Lil Jon-esque pimp cup...

Given the contract data, it's pretty safe to say the Phils were never really in this race for Soriano. I can't picture a GM who disposed of Abreu and his "overwhelming," "crippling" salary for some magic beans shelling out 8 year worth of major cash for this guy. Never gonna happen.

In the end, this isn't that bad for the Phils. The didn't hinder their future with a potentiallyl debilatating contract. The Mets didn't get him. They still have money for pitching, which is what they need anyway.

Off-Topic Sports
Hey, it's the offseason, I'm going to mix it up a little.

The Good - 1) UNC goes to 3-0 with 53 point beating of Gardner-Webb (apparently only Webb showed up for the game) 2) LaSalle wins their opener versus mighty Mt. St. Mary's

The Bad - 1) The Eagles vs. the Titans 2) The Packers vs. the Patriots

The Ugly - 1) Favre injured shoulder 2) McNabb injured knee

Cubs could be a strong team now that they're getting players & managers.

Gillick was smart not to commit that big of a contract to Soriano. Waiting to hear his "plan B".

I guess AJ Feeley's up next week??

mcnabb out for season, eagles lose. flyers suck. sixers are mediocre. phils failed to land big bat. city of philly is taking it's share of lumps...when do we get to ride high? paging rich dubee!

So now what? What's Gillick gonna do to imnprove this team? I was afraid of not having a backup plan ... and I'm really not in the mood to watch Burrell strike out 3 times a game next season.

seriously that is some disgusting money for that guy. can anyone on here legitimately say the phils should of givin him that sort of contract?? but i never would of guessed the cubs..wow.

That amount of money for Alf is ridiculous. The Cubs suck. They will still be shit next year. They are always shit.

The Phils offense was killer last year. Lets up the pitching and take it from there.

Gillick could put more into pitching now. Heck he could even go out and get 3 relievers and a starter. They still need another OF and replace anyone who gets traded.

i hate to say but the phils best option in the OF might be to keep Pat the bat and hope he has a good year

A huge huge bid on Schmidt is looking more and more likely now. I wonder if the real Michael Jack will have anything to say if Gillick can actually pull that one off...

go explorers!

And i agree with bloodstripes' use of the word shit. I used to say "i like the cubs...sucks they haven't won in awhile"
but now..I couldn't care less. greedy savages

Los- don't worry about Burrell striking out 3 times in a game, as I'm sure he'll mix some 1, 2, and 4 strikeout games in their too.

With the outfield of Burrell, Victorino, Rowand, and Conine we're ok...not great, not even good, but ok.

Need pitching! By the way Jason Schmidt wants no part of Philly says the reports.

Burrell is not a bad option. I have said before. I do not want them to 'give' him away if he is traded. He did hit 29 Hrs, 95 Rbis all the while playing 3/4 of the time. Remember when healthy he has put up some good numbers - even comming in 7th in MVP voting one year. Delluca would be a good fit even if Gillick promises full time. He could do 280/20/80 as the #6/7 hitter.

As far as catching is concerned I feel they are better off with Ruiz/Coste. They look to be the #8 hitter now with a 270/15/70 from them combined. Not bad since they are average on offense and above average on defense/arm/game calling, with Ruiz the fastest catcher in the NL. I have little interest in Piazza or Estrada.

A trade for a 3B is still not out of the question for Gillick if something arises. It may involve Helms being traded aswell, but if protection for Howard comes from that position then so be it.

Without Soriano they do have $$$ available for additions elsewhere. They could afford to pay the going rate for relievers and add couple of QUALITY guys there. It also opens up midseason aquisitions, payroll flexibility for trades (Andrew Jones, Vernon Wells or such), upgrades to the starters.

They haven't lost a game yet for 2007 so the seasons not over. I'll keep Pat and root for him to hit 290/40/130 if healthy it possible maybe not likely but possible.

I think the Phillies should bring back David Bell. Ok just kidding. As long as Gillick does something to improve the team, I suppose I am happy. Disappointed in Soriano signing with the Cubs, but I can't say that locking him up for 8 years would have been a good thing.

Lets go after Carlos Lee, and then he and Lieber can be the Ebony & Ivory of the donut eating-baseball playing world.

GM-Carson said...

umm, donuts!

burrell will be fine next season. he won't be worth 13 million, but he'll put up his career averages, which aren't that bad.

heard gillick wanted speier big time for the pen but those damn angels signed him. we better get somebody soon...bring on chad bradford!

i just read a silly suggestion on foxsports- phillies move j-roll to 3rd then try and acquire miguel tejada...ok, let's do it. but really, it's not a bad idea.

what would it take to get him?

I'd be OK with the offseason if we can just get better pitching. Lee is going to get insane dollars after Soriano's price tag. Did you know that fat ass Lee stole 19 bases last year?

GM-Carson said...

i like carlos lee because he's an atheletic fat ass.
