Eaton to Phils

According to ESPN, Adam Eaton has finalized a deal with with Phillies for 3 years, $24 million with a mutual option for year four. Which makes sense, because Adam Eaton sucked last year...

Eaton, a former number one draft pick (11th overall) by the Phils in '96, has battled numerous arm problems throughout the years as well as the stigma of being traded for Andy Ashby. He has compiled a career record of 54-45 with a 4.40 ERA, while never posting a season ERA under 4.00, never pitching more than 200 innings, and never winning more than 11 games. On a positive note, Adam hasn't balked in over 3 years.

Randy Wolf opted for the smog and silicone breasts of L.A., Miguel Bautista is old and sucky, Ted Lilly is more costly and equally as injury prone, Kip Wells used to be good, Jason Schmidt won't come east, Barry Zito is too costly and the Phils won't swallow their pride and bring back that switch-hitting monster Vicente Padilla. Basically, pickins are slim. And Eaton is better than Floyd.
---------------------------------
On a side note, from the ESPN story: "Phillies GM Pat Gillick flew to Seattle over the weekend to get the deal done. He and Eaton met on Gillick's 38th wedding anniversary." - Okay, maybe once you get to year 38 you just don't care anymore but I can't believe that Mrs. Gillick was okay with this. Chances are this little stunt is going to cost Pat some "quality time" with the Mrs. And for Adam Eaton???? Might have been Gillicks worst trade yet...
--------------------------------
Dellucci to Indians
"Dude you're getting a" Dellucci signed a three year deal with the Mistake-by-the-Lake Indians worth $11.5 million. He joins former Phillie and former cop-puncher Jason Michaels in the Tribe outfield.

poon-tang from the wife on your anniversary is more valuable than adam eaton.

on a positive note- eaton may not be that good of a pitcher, but he has a life time batting average of .191 with a .545 OPS...damn near as good as nunez.

i'm ok with this deal because how the market has been thus far, but i'm not exactly happy with it either.

Eaton is a good fielder. We should give him a 3B glove and let him platoon with Helms when hes not pitching. Nunez could then be traded for a bag of twizzlers and a bag of nuts from Texas.
Do they use a branding iron on their players out there????

Actually its a good signing. He was one of a few pitchers that looked fairly good. If healthy he can be very good. Phils want him to be a 20 game winner, I say why shoot low win 27 games. It may take a couple of years.

your take on the deal reminds me of a guy i was working with several years ago. we were onsite a lot and he hadn't been home in two weeks. it was mid-day on friday and we were trying to meet an end of day deadline for the client, so the guy calls his wife and says that he might have to stay late and might have to take a flight on saturday instead.

his wife replied, "you better get your ass on that plane, because there's going to be some f*cking in this house tonight whether you're here or not!"

needless to say, he made it home on friday.

I'm onsite for business now, I like that line... hopefully my wife doesn't give me that one come my last day... Go Phils... great signing... or not... but at least they signed somebody... Anything is better than, standing Pat

Yeah at least someone has been signed. A few sessions with Rich Dubee and Eaton will be on fire!

I like this move. Basically we just extended the Wolfman, except now he is right-handed and they'll have to come up with a new fan group.

The fine fellas over at Dodger Thoughts are already pondering how many times Wolf will be pitched *around* to get to Juan Pierre...

Gillick meanwhile is 2-2 thus far this offseason. All he needs to do is bring in one bullpen arm (which could still be Batista, among others) and a platoon Ledee-type RFer and I think we can call this offseason a success.

Adam's fan group- Eaton Pussy (fans cheer with cat tail hanging from mouth)...probably too vulgar. How about Adam's Apples instead?

I knew we coud'nt keep Dellucci, as he wanted to start. We will get draft pick now from the Indians (feather not dot).

I have to go get my long-arm cast removed now and have it replaced with a short-arm cast. I will be putting the finishing touches on the Tag Team Tuesday '93 tribute when I get back...it's a good one.

Eaton makes a good 5th starter.

Delluca signed with Cleveland and Drew with Red Sox. That make Manny available at $18 and $20 mil the next 2 years. I don't want his attitude though. I don't see Gillick trading for him but possibly signing Nixon who I'm not high on either.

I like the article I read yesterday of how to protect Howard (I forgot by who) and the best protection is to have a baserunner on when he hits. So breaking the bank for Ramirez isn't needed.

I love the Eaton's fangroup... the one thats too vulgar. Can you imagine that getting on the TV every fifth day. This must happen.

I'm fine with Eaton, AS LONG AS WE DON'T EXPECT HIM TO BE A NUMBER 2 OR 1.

He's barely a 3, probably more of a 4, so we have to hope that Lieber stays in some kind of shape (and I'm not talkin' about round).

GM-Carson said...

Los- I'm counting on Eaton to be the 5th starter so he's fine for that. Myers 1, Hamels 2, Lieber 3, Moyer 4, and eaton 5th...good deep rotation.

not a bad rotation. i'm glad they are actually going into spring training with a set rotation unlike last year where they thought they could figure it out as it goes..

GM-Carson said...

Eaton is by far better than Floyd and/or Madson. If Eaton can put health woes behind him, he has the ability to be anywhere from a 3rd-5th starter, and since we're only asking him to be the backend of the rotation we should be fine.

michael said...

exactly. any article i've read on this signing as been praising it because 1. he's only 29 2. has a lot of upside. so yeah i think our starting pitching if healthy will be really good this year

I don't like this deal. I don't see how a pitcher with an ERA over 5 gets $24 million over 3 years. I guess he's better than Wolf?

GM-Carson said...

because of the lack of quality out there on the market, pitchers like Eaton get those type deals. it's a crazy spending spree this offseason.

Eaton Pussy.

Bloody awesome DQ. Awesome!!!!

:]

BloodStripes said...

He was worth signing just for that joke. Crack me up.

After reading some reviews of this deal I think its alright. At least the rotation is full and ready to go. Hopefully Eaton has a fair bit of upside and he suprises us with some quality pitching. Time will tell.

FoxSports Lists Eaton as 4th Worst Signing...so far.
