Call of the Year

Time to honor the men who make watching Phillies games so enjoyable, the announcers, with their own award: Call of the Year

Runner-up:
1) Larry Anderson for this exchange with Scott Graham on radio
Larry: Here comes Nunez to pop up.
Scott: You mean pop out of the dugout to pinch-hit.
Larry: No, I mean pop up.

2) Scott Graham for his Graham Slam Ice Cream commercial. Not actually a baseball "call," but along with the WB Mason and Cherry Hill Nissan commercials, became an integral part of any Phillies radio broadcast.

Winner:
Chris Wheeler
for his total disregard for the health and well-being of children.

"That girl is okay, it scared her more than anything." Are you serious Wheels? The girl got hit in the face with a catchers mitt, that might have hurt. Jeez, I can't believe he didn't add "walk it off" or "don't rub it, pussy" to his list of callous commentaries. I guess you can add "child advocate" to the list of titles Chris Wheeler owns, including experienced broadcaster, HOF nominee, and latent homosexual. I wish someone would walk up to Wheels, smack him in the face, and say "I think it scared you more than anything." Enjoy your trophy, child-hater.

Corey

It should be more like: "Security needs to throw that girl out for interference! Look at the replay she intentionally put her face in the way so Leiberthal couldn't catch that. I'm surprised that Leiberthal let her get away with that, I would have punched her or something or hit her Mom to make an example of her."

That would have made that call all the more better!

bob d- excellent remix of what should have been said.

wolf to dodgers...bummer.

is it wrong to say i hope wolf's arm snaps in half his first pitch of the season? and WOLF PACK R.I.P.

but yeah stupid kid needs to get out of the way when leiby is making the catch, its all the damn kid's fault hanging all over the movie theater ropes. wheels just calls it as he sees it..straight shooter. but if you look close the ball hits the kid first and the leiberthal smacks the kid for getting in the way.

i do not wish wolf well. unlike michael, i don't wish injury upon him, rather a losing record and +5 era. i foresee a miguel batista signing soon.

I cannot possibly ever wish harm on wolf. And people shouldn't be that upset that he is gone...yea he was a cool dude...but was he really that good? he hasn't pitched 200 innings since 2003 and his 4-0 record last year was very hollow.

Good dude but I'm not losing sleep...as long as Floyd doesn't fill that roll.

death to floyd and his suckiness...

GM-Carson said...

i heard rumbles gavin floyd is our fill-in closer if/when flash gordon goes on the dl, because manuel thinks floyd succeeds well under pressure, and wheeler thinks he does all the little things right.

i don't really wish harm on him i was kidding. i definately forsee a losing record, i just don't think he will be that good, i read that his thinking behind this was to go to a pitcher's friendly park to make himself look good to parlay that into a big contract in '08. good luck buddy.

carson, you really think they're going to go that hard after batista? i honestly don't know what they're going to do now...i hope gillick still has some things he's working on noone knows about.

GM-Carson said...

michael- i know you were joking about harm to wolf, but it would have been ok if you weren't joking. we like a good laugh on here.

one possibility gillick might have is to sign trot nixon, then deal rowand for a 5th starter...i'm cool with that. if nixon can stay healthy, he'd be a nice assett to the offense, and conine would start against lefties.

wofl was a great dude, and will be missed. i'm going to do a montage of the best randy wolf pics from the blog in the near future.

this offseason is going about as well as the beginning of last real season. i might have to start running mr. belvedere and perfect strangers audio clips again...

I think the best option for the Phils to get a starter with the way the free agent market is dictating salary is via trade. The knock on Zito is that his curve isn't what it used to be and he's gonna get a huge payday. Schmidt breaks all the time, but he'll get a huge payday too. Batista is a number 3-4 starter...and if the Phils sign him, we're going down Millwood, Milton, Lieber, Lidle, (and ever Andy Ashby) road again.

Wolfy is a traitor. I just really hope the Phillies can find a solid 5th starter.

speaking of andy ashby, we could probably get him to dust off his spikes for another go-around...nah.

bucco rumor- pirates may be interested in obtaining expensive all-or-nothing slugger adam dunn from the reds. they already have a cheap all-or0nothing slugger in the form of brad eldred in the minors, but of course they won't give him a chance...this is the same organization that passed on a deal for ryan howard 2 seasons ago.

so the Phils got Eaton 3 yrs 24 mil. eh, we all kind of knew didnt we? I think i'm ok with this. thoughts?

GM-Carson said...

corey wanted adam eaton- i didn't. he's never been all that good. bad deal in my opinion. but where did you read we signed him?

i have a 1993 phils tribute lined up for tomorrow so that should cheer everyone up.

steve smith is our new 3rd base coach...so much for octopussy. smith was with the rangers, and that's where howe went...guess we swapped.

For teams that have played exactly 3 times in their history (the only team the Phillies are undefeated against!!!!), the Phils and Rangers have some weird, intertwined history. Consider:

Rangers' staff last year: Millwood, Padilla, Eaton (now back with the Phillies)
Trade #1: Dellucci to the Phils for Robinson Tejeda (who was in the Texas rotation for a while)
Trade #2: Castro to the Phils for Daniel Haigwood.

Then the weird, kind of swap for Steve Smith with Art Howe. Strange connections!!

Eaton's an okay signing, I'd prefer him to Miguel Batista and maybe even Wolf unless he comes back really strong off TJ surgery. We shouldn't have traded him in the first place - the second Andy Ashby era was one to forget...

it was reported on espn.com

stoked for the 93 retrospective tomorrow.

yeah it is odd that over the past year or so its been all rangers/phillies back and forth.
