Boy Named Sue

Johnny Cash once sang a classic tune titled A Boy Named Sue. Sue might seem like a terribly gay name for a boy, and in fact it is, but it could be worse. Your name could be Jeffrey Guy Conine. Who in their right mind would name a baby boy "Guy". That's real fricken original, how long did it take the parents to think of that one? Probably only a few seconds following birth because they saw the tell-tale sign of maleness...a penis! At least Sue for a boy gives the kid some character and isn't so generic.

We might be seeing a lot of Jeff Conine next season in Phillies pinstripes and that scares me. I only want to see him on the bench with limited starts in the outfield while being the first pinch hitting option. By my quick calculation that's only about 150 at bats. However, if Burrell or Rowand are traded we could be easily looking at much more playing time for the 40-year-old and that's not a good thing offensively or defensively. Don't get me wrong, I liked the trade for Conine, still like the trade, and am glad to have him on the team next year. As I stated above, if he's on the bench, then he's a top-notch bench player. As a starter, he leaves much to be desired. His OPS has steadily decreased the past 4 seasons, as is the trend for aging players. I actually have nothing against Conine, I just hope he doesn't rack up anywhere close to 300+ at bats, because if he does, that means the club will be having a drop-off in production from the previous season.
Check out Conine's wife, Cindy, in the red dress. Anybody know who the black dude in the picture is? I have no idea, possibly a member of Conine's entourage.

"My daddy left home when I was three. And he didn't leave much to Ma and me. Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze. Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid. But the meanest thing that he ever did. Was before he left, he went and named me Sue."
Gotta love the Man in Black!

excellent post about conine. you hit the nail on the head. conine would be a great player off the bench but a below average starter (worse the Pat the Bat)

Dane- didn't you enjoy the Johnny Cash theme?

Thought you guys would like this story:

Coffins to bear logos of baseball teams

Enjoy!

Thanks Kate. Oh, I want the Phillies logo urn. I've already stated I want my ashes spread on a baseball field, well now I can have the proper container.

Conine coming off the bench is the go. An ideal pinch hitter and sometimes starter. His experience and presence will be beneficial but I agree, not too much game time. He is slowing down.

Another good post mate. Keep 'em coming. What happened to the tag teams?

GM-Carson said...

Tag Team Tuesday was skipped this week due to not enough time. Don't worry, I'm planning a good one for next week. And of course you still have the Phlashback Phriday and Saturday Poll to look forward to.

I'm quite pleased with how this blog is still going considering it's the offseason. Hopefully when the Hot Stove starts and Gillick begins wheelin' and dealin' more people will stop by and give their 3.7 cents. Isn't that how the saying goes?

BloodStripes said...

Thats how it goes mate. In OZ, a 'bob' is slang for 10 cents. The saying down here goes "I'll put my 2 bob's worth in and say........".

The blog is going great DQ. Hopefully more and more people will stop by and put their 2 bob's worth in.

The Oriole mascot has made a charge past the crabs in the last poll. Now the phanatic can finally get to an AA meeting. Pop ups!

I'd rather have Conine than Burrell at this point, but yes, there needs to be an upgrade if (when, hopefully) Burrell is gone. Too bad, Isaiah Thomas doesn't manage one of the New York baseball teams.

carson- a johnny cash theme is good anytime. I think Ring of Fire may describe our love for the Phillies

Dane hopefully it will be a different ring next year.

I'll start rooting for Bourn to start which I think will happen by August at the latest next year.

GM-Carson said...

Dane- Corey and my friend, Ben, is in a retro-punk/rock band and they do a killer version of Ring of Fire. I'll keep that in mind for a future post.

I want Conine on this team, really I do. However, if it's in a starting capacity then I believe that is a very poor decision. Logging around 150 ab's next season is what I would like to see from Conine, that and his verteran leadership.

Conine hasn't been good for about 3 years now. It's pointless to deal Burrell.

It's pretty awesome that you guys can keep updating with so much dedication. I'm just a seasonal fan... I can't keep thinking about the Pirates in the offseason too or I'd go insane.

GM-Carson said...

Che- baseball goes all year long for us GM's! I'm loving this blog, it's so much fun, and there's quite a community we got here. We may not always agree on every aspect, but we respect each other's opinions and can joke around about it.

Che, the season never ends.

Most of us here are addidicted and borderline crazy. In fact right now I should be on my way to work but I just keep posting here. Hope my supervisor isn't part of this.

Hahaaa, not that I stop caring about baseball in the offseason. It's just that football and hockey also take up some time.

But back to baseball: check it out, the NL's contribution to the World Series comes from the Central division!

Don't ask me why the Mets couldn't knock out the Cards because I do not know.

Bob D, I am fully addicted and my wife reckons I am over the bordeline and fully crazy. What a good woman!

I dont even live in the States and I am a full on Phillies phreak....., but who cares.....Phils phorever!

A favourite Johnny Cash song of mine is the Soundgarden cover 'rusty cage', a killer track. For originals i like 'Tennessee Stud'. Awesome stuff!

GM-Carson said...

Johnny Cash is a legend, and honestly I've been a fan of his before his career resurrection.

Why the Mets didn't win the series- no Pedro.

Blogging in addicting.

Bloody Cardinals! That should have been Philadelphia.

World Series not containing the Phillies= yawn.

Is it November yet?

The best thing about the post season has been watching Baseball Today - postgame show on baseballchannell.TV on mlb.com. You get the highlights, some laughs, presses. For me down here its been great.

Have you seen the Tommy Lasordo commercial about post season on Fox? He says..."so your team is'nt in the play-offs. Its october....you live for this, I live this, we all live for this. To the TV!" Once again. For me here in Oz its funny. I never see stuff like that unless of course I source it out on the web. For me, I take what I can get. Its all good.

BloodStripes said...

When you ask 'is it over yet?' I laugh and think of you and that commercial. I know it aint the Phillies but baseball is baseball. Aside from the postgame show I have'nt seen that much, but I'm enjoying it while it is on. Go Tigers!

BloodStripes said...

Dont get me wrong DQ. I know you love baseball more than anyone I know, but I gotta laugh.

GM-Carson said...

I'm just ready for the Phillies to start wheelin' n dealin', but I've been watching the playoffs, because I love baseball! I just like to complain about the Phillies missing out yet again in the meantime.

BloodStripes said...

I knew you'd be watching. Good stuff mate! The Phillies will be there soon. They just have to get there!

This kid in my gym class is named Guy...last name Tevis.

Conine is aging and in no way should become a starter. He's a hottie though.

GM-Carson said...

Maria- are you ever going to be able to look at "Guy Tevis" again the same way?
