Why Not?

Question of the day: Can the Phillies actually win the NL Wild Card?
Answer: Why Not?!
Now, I know I answered the question with a question, but honestly that is the best way to riposte. As of today, the NL Wild Card shakes down like this...Cincy, S.D., 'zona, and Philly. That's right, at a record of 61-62 the Phils are only 2.5 back of the Wild Card and just got a bit stronger in the rotation. The Phils traded for a 43-year-old left-hander in Jamie Moyer. He's better than Scott Mathieson, which looks to be heading to the bullpen...we all knew it! Moyer's record is 6-12 this season, but he has the 2nd lowest run support in MLB. He's been pretty consistent over the years for the M's, and now hopefully comes to Philly to add a stabilizing force to the rotation so that we have 5 decent starting pitchers down the stretch run. Caution- Moyer's post-All-Star ERA 7.15, Home ERA (SafeCo) 3.80, and Road 5.29...let's hope Moyer is a bit rejuvenated by coming back to his home state of PA and back in the thick of a Wild Card race.

Nuggets of Joy:
*Lieberthal- I've been extremely harsh on him over the years, and would continue to be if not for his new role on the team. He's no longer the starter, and all of a sudden I don't mind him. In fact, I like him as a backup catcher, he's hitting better and playing better defense now that he's only starting about 3 times a week. I still want to see a Ruiz/Coste backstop next season, but for now Lieby is playing out his final games in Philly with class and production.
*Legend & Lore- Fabio "Model Dictator" Castro now up to 14.1 IP of ZERO run baseball for the Phils!
*Nunez- now batting a whopping .198...still don't like him, but I am rooting my ass off for him to break the Mendoza line.
*Howard- 43 homeruns...holy shittah!
*.500- finally, tonight against the Cubbies.

Lieby is finally hitting well, which is good, because besides his strong arm behind the plate, that's about all he brings (and right now, that is all the Phils need).

Nunez is playing inspired ball, Phinally!

Did the Phils get a senior citizen's discount when they signed Moyer?

i wouldn't mind of coste and lieby split time like they are this year. right now both are being very productive.

I beleive Mathieson went to AAA not the bullpen. They do have a legit shot at the WC and it should not be very surprising. The trades did not bring in much ML talent. I let others have oppurtunity. Delluca / Victorino plays in RF after Abreu left. Moyer now takes Lidle's spot. Model Dictator Castro has Cormier's spot. Nunez takes over for Bell who didn't have alot more offense anyway. And best yet Coste takes over at C for Fu-Man-Chu Guy. Not much drop off in production here at all.

I was unaware the Mathieson went to Scranton, last I read he was going to the bullpen and Sanches was the likely demotion. Either way, I'm happy to have Moyer and his AARP card!

i think mathieson got sent down but will be recalled in september and put in the bullpen

Mathieson is going to Scranton to help them with the playoff push and regain confidence. That boy has a future in Philly...possible closer material. I hope he gets his head straight up there in Wilkes-Barre, because he's got good stuff!

Really Lieby and Coste are platooning with Coste catching Hamels and Lieber I believe and Lieby catching Wolf and Myers - not sure what will happen with Moyer. I wouldn't mind this arrangement for next year as the catcher market doesn't look so hot. Spend money at third.

Personally I want a Chris "East-vs-West" Coste and Carlos "Chooch" Ruiz tandem behind the plate next season, and still address 3rd. Not that there are many better options at 3rd on the market, but imagine if A-Ram of the Cubs decides to opt out of his contract...perfect for Philly because he's power and right handed.

I may be Lieberthal's harshest critic, but I loosen up every August as he reliably gets these eleventh hour hot streaks. Looking at his career stats, he's not so bad, even in the past few years, but we need someone more consistent and adept overall. The Coste/Ruiz combo seems a great value, but I don't think I'd sacrifice either for Lieberthal unless he wants in for cheap. That would give us a veteran pinch hitter and remedy the shallow bench.

There was some blog-talk about auditioning Coste at third. Personally, I don't envision a 33 year old career catcher performing adequately in the hot corner, but if it worked out, I'd be satisfied with Ruiz/Lieberthal for C. Three catchers is unusual in any circumstance, but this team needs to think "outside the box" for any chance at midterm playoffs. We can't waste Howard and Utley waiting for these A guys to mature, and the FA market is overpriced junk.

Nunez needs to be traded (fat chance!) or relegated back to "utility infielder" to give Howard, Rollins, and Utley breaks in blowout games. Moving Bell was correct, but we need a replacement!

Best scenario with Nunez is that he gets regulated back to utility infielder next season. Gillick won't release him, and it's highly doubtful another team would want him.

I dunno. The Royals seem desperate to suck, and the Devil Rays are a reliable dumping ground for Phillies rejects.

I swear that BeerLeaguer comes here and rips my ideas off. His blog for today is about Mike Lieberthal's possible final games...hello, I had this up and running early this morning! I don't really think Weitzel comes here for my thoughts, but this isn't the first time this has happened. Hell, I'm just jealous that this blog doesn't get the action that BeerLeaguer does, but I thank the loyal readers on here and we'll keep growing and build a strong cynic-Phillies Blogdom!

Don't forget the Castro fan club. That started here weeks before Beer Leaguer got in.

The Legend & Lore of the Model Dictator is a WSBGM's original, and we've also been heading the "Bobby Scales for 3rd" promotion!

WSBGM's holds bragging rights over the Model Dictator. He's our main man.

Can Phillies win the WC. Yes, I been saying why not? for a while now. Just had to sort the starting roles. I believe the Moyer trade to be a good one. The dude is going home to the best club around in a WC race. Why would'nt he be pumped and ready to go. On top of that, a change ought to be good for the man. 10 years in Seattle is a good stint. He will be keen to impress.

Hey Che! You said you were superstitous. Could the Phils have number 13 as a lucky number this year? 1980 - World champs, 1993 - NL Pennant, 2006 - Wild card? Hope so. I'm gonna smash a mirror or 2 and walk under a few ladders to help them along. Hey theres a black cat. Here puss puss puss........

Another ugly, ugly win. Rowand once again shows his collision prowess and nearly takes Utley out with him this time. Hate to say it since Rowand's had enough for the season, but I'm Utley was the one who walked away.

So now our bench is nonexistent. If there were a time to call up Scales, Ruiz, or friggin' anybody, now's it. C'mon, Pat, work some more waiver magic.

After a couple of days of waning optimism I'm feeling normal again. The fightin's are finally back at .500. Win the series in Chicago and they'll be going even better. All you naysayers all aboard the bandwagon cause now we're legit!

GM-Carson said...

The collision was nasty, glad Utley wasn't hurt. I also hope Rowand is ok, because he's the best option we have at the moment. Out bench needs help big time! Gordon to the DL...not a good sign.

Rhodes almost blows the win, but that's the main thing, they won!
