Phillies Phlashback Phridays: Noles & Thon (Dickies)

Welcome to another edition of Phillies Phlashback Phridays. The players I've chosen for this week are real Dicks...Dickies that is. Dickie "Grassy" Noles and Dickie "Mara" Thon actually played together on the Phils '90 team. Noles only pitched 1 game that season, in which would be his last...thank goodness! Noles began and ended his lackluster career as a Phillie, also pitching for them from 78-81. Thon on the other hand, put in 3 solid seasons at shortstop for the Phils from 89-91. He even clubbed 15 homeruns in '89, which was a lot for a SS back then. So, on this fine Friday in mid-August I would like everyone to reminisce on our two lovely Dickies that graced Veteran's Stadium. *Danny Cox didn't join the Phillies until '91. That's a damn shame too, imagine the possibilities with 2 Dickies and 1 Cox on a team!

Tidbits:
*Buccos have a weekend series against the Reds. This is why as a diehard Phillies fan, I am an ally with the Pirates.
*Prophet- I predicted a solid outing by Lieber 2 days ago and Howard's 42 homerun yesterday...you may now address me as Oracle Carson.
*Boo- I am all for booing players when they deserve it, and as much as I like Pat Burrell...he deserves it.
*Nats- their offense looks bad, their pitching staff looks bad...this usually means that they'll pitch lights-out versus the Phils and put up 8 runs a game.

~Carson

P.S. How's our boy Model Dictator doing?

Well Oracle Carson I hope your wrong about the Nats coming good. I was also thinking along those lines today , but said to myself: 'no way, not now, not against the NEW Phillies. We're too tough right now to get done by the Nats. We got King Cole'. Besides the Phils have more to play for. Hey the Phils are just better! Good enough to go 2-1 anyway and take the series to end up .500 by sunday. Note in our favour: Nats are 23-38 on the road. Not much chop. Mash 'em Phils!

As for the Pirates. They must have one of the most picturesque parks in baseball and they enjoy playing there. 32 of their 46 wins have come at home for a 32-30 home record. The reds are O.K on the road but Pittsburgh are no easybeats at home. Cmon Pirates! Envoke the spirit of the great one Roberto and do it for the brothers of love! Smack them reds!

Remember the musical genius "Nat King Cole"? Hamels is a trader!!!

I've yet to pay homage to PNC park...I need to go pronto!

I hope hamels can trade 100 pitches for a win saturday.

Hey I dig the old Phillies baseball cards on Phlashback Phridays. Do you have yearly collections of the Phils? All those obsure players. Even if only a Phillie for a day.

Burrell is awful - I throw up a little in my mouth each time he is at the plate nowadays. Whatever happened to this guy - so much promise, so much hype. The guy doesn't even seem to care about trying to get better.

The worst part is, the Phils tried to deal him to the O's last month, and had the trade all worked out, except, thanks to Ed Wade's "ingenius" no trade clauses, Burrell nixed the deal (which makes me hate him even more at this point).

GM-Carson said...

Burrell is a huge factor of how the rest of this season will shakeout. The Phils desperately need his righthanded pop...and there is NO pop when you look at called 3rd strikes every game Pat!

Damn that stripper who took his swing!

LOSERS- all 6 Phillies minor league affiliates and the partent club lost yesterday...disgusting!

Oracle Carson predits again: tonight's outcome Phils 5 Nats 3...7 strong innings from Myers and Rhodes nails down the game in the 9th. Offensive hero for the game tonight-David Dellucci.

*Now if any of that shit comes true, I'm opening up a little shop in the mall with a crystal ball and some tarot cards!

dane said...

oracle carson: i wouldn't worry about getting that little shop in the mall with the way this game is going

BloodStripes said...

You were right the first time oracle. In the tidbits part.

Whelkman said...

Is it really just the 2nd inning? Seems like this game started hours ago. Why the hell is Geary up of all people?

BloodStripes said...

Terrible outing by Myers. I know you like my optimism Carson but its slowly retreating. If we dont end up .500 after this series I may well become a non-beleiver.

BloodStripes said...

Bummer. We can't get to .500 this series. Psych me up Rev. Drama Queen i'm losin' the faith.

bloodstripes, i have something i'd like to mention, but i'm a superstitious man, so i'll get back to you in 2 days' time. if anybody else noticed what i mean, don't say it, haha.

but down to business. the Reds received some sweet Pirate lovin' today, final score 7-3 Pittsburgh. there's more where that came from.

GM-Carson said...

Pirates did exactly what I wanted them to...thanks Buccos.

Phils did exactly what I dreaded they might do...screw you Phils!

Myers is looking horrible lately, at a time where we need him to step up and be the man. Maybe someone should punch him in the face to wake his ass up!

Oracle Carson is retiring for the time being. Rev. Drama Queen is making his return!

Being a Pirates fad i had to mention this:

I remember on numerous occasions Dickie Thon making clutch plays or hits during his brief stint with the team in the 90s, him and Micky Morindini

Does anyone remamber 'the Dickies' the punk band? They were cool.

GM-Carson said...

BloodStripes- are you a punk fan? If so you are on the right blog, because Corey and I are HUGE punk fans brotha!

BloodStripes said...

Awesome man. I am a big punk fan and have loads of old vinyl albums still hanging around. I really like American hardcore stuff too as well as all the Aussie stuff. The Minutemen were my favourite US band, along with Black Flag, Minor Threat, Mudhoney, MDC, The Dicks, Fugazi, DRI, Sonic Youth.....the list goes on.

I got to see the Ramones, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Fugazi, DRI, Rollins, Screaming Trees, Tool just to name a few when they came to Australia years ago. Once again the list goes on.

Talk to me bro! I love the shit. If talking all this stuff clogs your blog send me emails at bloodstripes@dodo.com.au if ya want. I'm glad I got to meet you Carson (even if it is via the web) thanks to those mighty Phillies! By the way my real name is Andrew.

Good stuff bro! Look forward to some more Punk rockin' Phils blogs!

Go phillies.

All good bands. Which reminds me I have seen Sick Of It All, they were the ex-Descendants guys were'nt they. They were good. Very good. Played some Descendants songs actually.

Saw Pennywise also at one of the bigger festivals. Your bringing back the memories. Might crack open a VB.

GM-Carson said...

BloodStripes- actually the Descendants offspring band was just ALL. Sick of it All is a NY Hardcore band.

We also love H2O. The list goes on and on...

BloodStripes said...

Ah yeah, thats right. Several years later was'nt it. Some hazy days I'm trying to remember. Haha.

Any local Philly punk bands new or old? If so, you gotta send me a song or two.

GM-Carson said...

All came to be while Milo of the Descendants was in college...gotta love punk.

Step Ahead is an awesome underground punk band if you can check them out.

BloodStripes said...

I have the 'Milo Goes to College' album right here. I used to draw that head from the cover on all my surfboards.

Step ahead huh? I well search for them on the web and file sharers. Thanks man.

My office is a little shrine to Phillies baseball. May as well have some Philly tunes to play in here as well. Just gotta get some Yeungling somehow.

:]

I imagine a bottle of Yuengling is hard to come by in Australia.

BloodStripes said...

Yes very much so. So much so, I have never even seen a bottle. Can you post a picture of one for me in a blog sometime? Maybe an ode to Pat Burrell or something, you know, you could blend in the drinking part. haha!!

GM-Carson said...

BloodStripes- this Saturday's post will be about the "Great Debate" between the fine cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia...therefore a pic of a bottle of Yuengling will be included.
