Land Down Under

Phils come from a land down under,
Where runners score makes playoff wonder,
Can't ya hear, Can't ya hear Howard's thunder,
Pitchers better run, better take cover!

The Phillies certainly are coming from a "land down under" in their pursuit of the Wild Card. They continue to stay in the thick of it, but also continue to frustrate the hell out of me along the way...why ever would this change?!

Men at Work:
*Nunez- after peaking at .206, Abe has gone 0 for his last 15 to drop back down to .192, abysmal!
*Manuel- after doing some smart managerial moves in the Cubs series with the bullpen he totally blew last night! We now have two non-veterans (Matt "Generic Name" Smith and Thee Model Dictator) with far better ERA's than any of the "tried and proven". Although I beg to differ that White, Madson, Rhodes, and Fultz have "proven" to be much more than mediocre. I know conventional wisdom of baseball past says go with what you know, but it's time Fabio Castro get the chance more often!
*Corey&Carson- we are addicted to this blog. I'm starting to think this is my actual job. We're like comical geniuses up in here, much along the lines of Beavis and Butthead. Me being Beavis because of my excitability and after all I am the "Great Cornholio". Corey being Butthead, the name says it all, plus he holds asinine wisdom! BloodStripes, who is now an honorary member of WSBGM's can be Stewart (although we treat him better).

last night was frustrating but the bullpen has been generally reliable. i do agre that it is time to let castro get more meaningful innings. lets win the series today

Sorry to hear about last night, but that's what Ollie Perez'll do to ya. He deceives you by walking multiple people in a row and then giving up a grand slam. Then, when you get complacent, his team scores hundreds of runs for the victory.

In actuality, I can't believe the Mets called him up; I thought maybe that post about him yesterday was a joke. He was the ace of the Pirates' staff in 2004, but it's not 2004 no more. There's a reason why the man is 2-10, and it's not just because he compiled that record while playing for the Pirates. I guess the Mets thought they could shape him into something useful.

"We're like comical geniuses up in here" dude, you're smoking a little too much "rich dubee"

Corey- by calling ourselves "comical geniuses" that makes it even funnier...but you're right, I should lay off the crackpipe, damn Weezer got me hooked on the hash!

Damn rain! As much as we need this rain, I'm pissed that today's game is postponed.

What is the big ground swell for Castro??? He's a rule five pick--he was picked for his FUTURE development not to help us now. Clearly the Phillies management as a whole, e.g. not just Manuel, believe he is a diamond in the rough who needs a lot of polishing before he will be able to help in the majors.

If the Phils could send him to the minors without losing him I'm sure they would since they clearly believe he needs more work. The Phils also don't want to risk development by using him at the major league level.

GM-Carson said...

xats- what hell type of reasoning is that? Castro has 17.1 innings of ZERO run baseball pitched! That is never to be underestimated. I don't give a flying two-fisted butt-dart if he's Rule 5 or Verne Ruhle...he should be pitching more! I understand that he's not finely polished and needs more developing, but to discount what he's done thus far is criminal!

You know things are out of hand when people harrass the radio shows about Castro. His legend has moved beyond the blog community.

The Legend & Lore of Thee Model Dictator started here my friends...and I will continue to push it, because the man deserves better!

Things sure are frustrating. Most times the oppurtuniy arises to climb higher in the WC race the Phils find a way to lose and slip a notch. They have made progress but ever so slowly. Todays game would have been interesting to see if they could make it 5 series in a row.

Abe Nunez get your ass back to work on that hitting. Just cause you broke the Mendoza line does not mean you can relax.

Fabio ain't no fool he can pitch. Managemant did'nt mind roughing Mathieson's diamond before polishing it. 17.1 scoreless ones. You can't do that if your a mug. Lets go for 20!

Thanks for the honorary membership. I will do my upmost to keep this fine blog held in high esteem!

Onwards to victory!

I met a strang lady, she made me nervous, she took me in and made me breakfast! And she said Oh I come from the land down under!!!

Now's the perfect time for bullpen relief, too. "Gas Can" Geary somehow holds up, but Fultz, Rhodes, and White have nothing left in the tank. All three guys have risen above baseline mediocrity for the Phils, but there's only so much turd polishing one can do! They all have been consistently awful lately.

BloodStripes said...

Yeah the bullpen have had some nerve-racking outings lately. Maybe today's postponed game is a blessing in disguise. They could do with these 2 days off. Hope it helps.

GM-Carson said...

BloodStripes- I believe the game has been postponed to tomorrow, but don't mark my word. I like Fultz, and I think once Madson accepts the fact that he's a bulldawg for life, he'll be better too. They're simply getting used too much. And Manuel doesn't have a good excuse for it either, because Fabio is always ready to go!

GM-Carson said...

Rumor has it that the team just got a bit older and acquired Jeff "Mr. Marlin" Conine. As facts roll in about this trade, please leave updates.

GM-Carson said...

confirmed- today's game has been rescheduled to tomorrow (Monday) @ 12:10...which means I'll be at work and not be able to watch, drat!

up in the air- the rumor of Conine coming to Philly.

Whelkman said...

I'm all for bench help, but why must we acquire backups for our strongest positions (1B, 2B, SS) when we have a glaring hole at 3B?

Even if Gillick thinks Nunez is the best 3B since Schmidt, what happens if he gets hurt? We have absolutely nobody to go there.

Los said...

Awful effort by the bullpen and right fielder last night. "Thankfully" I was celebrating my brother's birthday at a bar that only had NASCAR showing ... as can be imagined, I got drunk.

BloodStripes said...

A 12:10 game means 2am first pitch here. Thats a bit tough. I'll get up for the final result.

I said this in Model Dictator-ville but will say it again here. Fabio has shown some class. He is there so why not use him more. Once a week or less is not much good. Its almost a 24 man roster. And yes to Whelkman once again, a 3B back-up would be a good idea. Although maybe they think they could use Coste at 3rd and bring up Ruiz if necesarry.

Men At Work......LOL, awesome Drama! Aussie icons! .......she just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich......and she said oh I come from the land down under!!!

Looks like Conine has played 3B a bit this year.

Lieberthal's back is sore - he'll be out until at least Tuesday. I hope he & Coste can make it for the rest of the year.

GM-Carson said...

Official- Conine is a Phillie. This is a good trade. Conine now becomes the best bench player. He can play corner outfield and corner infield...yes 3rd base. He'll be a Phillie next year too, and although he's old (40) he's a good guy to have in reserve. By the way his nickname on here will be Jeff "Inate" Conine, I hope you find that one funny!

I also hope the Phils keep Thurston up, and send either Sandoval or Roberson down. Thurston is the most versatile of all three, and it looks like none of them can hit all that well, so go with most possible positions playable.

A story that will most likely because a future post on this blog...anyway- On Thursday the Pirates fans booed Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies so bad that they didn't even finish their show. For those of you who don't know Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, they are a punk band that only does covers...and they do them well! I love punk and I love 80's...they combine the best of both worlds! I know Phillie fans booed Santa Claus, but Bucco fans you booed an awesome band...shame on you!

Reds lost! Now if the Phillies can win tomorrow they'll only be .5 game back. The Marlins have won 7 straight though & now more teams are in the WildCard race.

Che said...

Don't ask me why they booed the band. It seemed pretty damn cruel to me. The singer said that it was the most people to ever boo him at one time. The one consolation was that the Pirates paid Me First and the Gimme Gimmes some unnamed large sum of money, so it's not like they left Pittsburgh empty-handed. Also, at least Bucco fans know where the money that should be spent on their team's payroll is really going.

Whelkman said...

The best was booing Blind Melon off the stage at the Vet during a Stones concert in '94 or '95. They really sucked.

BloodStripes said...

Yes Maria Florida are charging back into contention and thanks to SF beating the reds they are only 2 back now. Reds at Chavez Ravine ought to find the going even harder. Big oppurtunity for the Phils tommorrow and during the next series. Its getting hot!

Talk about addicted.

I cant say I've booed a band at a ballgame but once at a gig in Sydney in about 1990 or something we were watching the Rollins band. Things were going along smooth enough until someone threw their empty beer can at Henry with his back turned. Henry was not happy and said "if your gonna throw cans at me do it to my face". Well you dont say that to a punk crowd in Sydney or I suppose in Philly because after that every in the crowd started throwing their empties at Henry. You'd finish your beer, wander over to the front, hurl it at Henry and go buy another. It was a great night. Rollins was rockin' as well, but gee it was fun tossin' empty beers at him. Haha.

Those were the days. Punk gigs with virtually no security. Stage diving permitted!

Yeah, and we see how the Mathieson experiment worked out--he couldn't get past the fourth inning on the mound--the clubhouse, the dugout, the showers, no problem--just not on the field. And when has Castro pitched? I thought he was only being used in blow outs and such? I also thought he was very young---like 19 or 20?

BTW, we're also about to get another 15 roster spots right? Can't we find anyone else to do middle relief? And if we can't, do the Phils even belong in the playoffs?

BloodStripes said...

Yes he has generally pitched in blowouts and yes he is very young. But so far he has done nothing except successfully get guys out. Mathieson was given a chance and is now in Scranton. Well at least we know. Besides he'll be back next week.

Maybe your right Xats. Maybe the Phils should protect him and send to the minors next year to learn more. I don't confess to know anything. All I know is that he has done well and I like it. I think many here believe has earnt a chance.

GM-Carson said...

Well, as BloodStripes may not confess to knowing everything...I am not as modest. Pitch Castro...screw conventional wisdom!

This was on the Phillies website about Fabio Castro......."I think he's trying to force me to put him into a close game," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's got a good arm. He's doing pretty well for a kid who's never pitched above [Class] A ball."

Also......Ryan Howard's grand slam on Saturday gave him 34 RBIs in August, setting a new franchise for the month. He broke Don Demeter's mark of 31, set in 1962.

Go Ryano!
